Re:Smarties they are still not kosher . Don't know if they are halal now
Kosher and Halal are the same, i think the only difference is the name used when halaaling, Koshering...lol:D i cant think of the english word the animal.

And i think that stuff about milk and meat
Oh no they are not:)
Most certainly not, the rules of kashrus are very complex and quite different.
For example and this is only a few
the way meat is killed.
Kosher meat may be OK for some muslims but it does not work the other way around. Our meat has no prayer said over it as it is killed.
The alcohol prohibition, we don't have that although we have quite specific rules relating to grape products(wether alcoholic or not.)
Grape juice must be supervised or it is not kosher.
That includes it's presence in sweets jam etc.
wine vinegar is not kosher unless it is supervised
Cheese must be supervised, not just vegetarian ditto yogurt.
margarine must be supervised
Cooked or partially cooked prepackeged rice must be supervised.

And Passover brings a whole new set of rules
You guys have it easy
LOL how ridiculous is all that? supervision for grape juice, cheeses and pre-packaged rice??
requiring supervision over foodstuffs though, come on someone has to be pulling many legs:D
All food is supervised in Britain the majority only by a set of rules laid down by the government. They do inspections and lay down guidelines
We just have extra rules thats all. So do muslims and so do hindus.

What does supervision mean, so you dont say in the name of Yahweh?

No, no praying, that is for the individual who buys and consumes it
it just means that they are under the supervision of the local Kashrus authority.
They check regularly that standards are being upheld in accordance with Jewish law.
So keeping foods seperate (i.e milk meat)
Making sure that the machinery is not used for non kosher food products.
They can also spot check anytime they want. Turn up unanounced. They have an agreement to keep to the laws applicable to whatever food is being produced.
And often (not always) there is a hesher on the product a little seal or stamp bearing the name of whoever supervised it.
For example Kedassia or the LBD.
There is a guide put out every year that lists acceptable processed food products. By the London Beth Din.

Do you guys have one?:)
Well they've formed a muslim halal meat council which tells us which butcher is halal, and the mosque my brother goes to has a list of foods which have been found not to be halal.
Also each school of thought has a different opinion on what is halal, they agree on the basic, but like stuff on the periphery theres a wide range of opinion

We have exactly the same thing with different views;)
I saw a little symbol on a packet of quorn pieces the other day
from the Halal Food authority???
Like our hesher but I don't know what you call it?
So do you have any other food rules apart from alcohol and pork?

I apologise for my ignorance
Dont be, so am i to the most part, i rely on my brother he does the food shopping lol
We have something called Makrooh, which means undesirable and i think thats where most of the disagreement happens. All one hoofed animals are makrooh, all fish are halal, theres wide range of opinions on prawns i.e crustaceans they are either makrooh or halal according to where your from
Cats are Makrooh, which means your not supposed to eat them, but in extreme cases you can, lol:D
Some believe alcohol made from non fruit sources which is not used as an intoxicant is o.k
Any intoxicant including smoking is haraam, or makrooh depending what view you hold.
I've been to an Asda where they sell the "halal" Haribo.
But I think it's a bit of a misnomer because it's not really got any meat in it - they use some kind of artificial replacement for gelatine.
So actually is IS a veggie sweet, I think!
I noticed Tescos now show "pork gelatine" or "beef gelatine" in the ingredients lists on a lot of their food - instead of just "gelatin" - so it seems recognition about what type of gelatine is used in food has grown in recent years.
I think it's a grey area for some Muslims because they might argue that normal Haribo didn't actually have "meat" in it and therefore they could eat it happily! I always thought that was a bit of a pokey excuse but eh, it's their choice if they want to eat it or not!
I have eaten the halal Haribo - tasted quite decent. Can't compare it to the non-halal though so I have no idea if they're different!

here is a link to a letter from the company to a muslim customer talking about the new Haribo range and what the difference(s) are.
Im Muslim too and again, I eat Haribo's, I eat alot of other things we shouldnt, But then thats only small things, I wouldnt do Alcohol or anything, Sweets and that is fine.. I just use the excuse that I didnt read the wrapper if anyone asks :P.
However, Again it should how much people are true to their faith and religion if they can restrict themselves to such things.
Also, What is rasict about this thread, Its shows how curious people are about other religions and how they want to learn - Which im sure leads to better understanding and maybe bring people together actually knowing about a person after finding the facts for themselves then through the Biased Media.
Yes... But when i was a kid, most of the kids these days dont pay attention to whats halal or haram.
Why don't the halal Haribo's 'work' for you, have you tried the 'normal' Haribo's before to make a good comparison?:)
They dont work, because it doesnt taste like sweets... i dont know, it tastes cheap, hard to describe lol. but in comparison to haribo (yes i have had them before) they are no where near comparison.. but unfortunately its not suitable for veggies
Some people actually think that Mcdonalds and KFC (im not criticising a previous poster, thats his personal choice) are Halal. They are mainly arabs.
We grow up with these weird stereotypes that Arabs are better Muslims and more knowledgable, yet they seem so ignorant about dietry laws. They use a term kul Halal, i think its that. Which means i think everythings Halal.
The 2 main reasons are apparently these are owned by jews, therefore Kosher, OR secondly its only Chicken or Beef.

Jews own KFC and McDonalds no waaaaaay!!
No that has to be a mistake, I will hang my head in shame (well I'll add it to the list ) if it's true.
Mcdonalds isn't kosher.
Some of its resturants in Israel are properly Kosher and have a kashrus certificate. They use blue and white on their logo. Its only about a dozen of them
The rest use kosher beef but are not properly kosher.
EDIT; Just found this on a Salvation army website
Q. Why did Mrs. Kroc pick The Salvation Army?
A. Mrs. Kroc and her husband Ray - founder of McDonald's - were long-time supporters of The Salvation Army.

LOL! I knew that it seems others dont:D
I hope this is not personal BUT some people i know recently have been claiming that Marks and Spencers pays funds toIsrael/Israeli army is that true? (theres apparently been protests outside the London store, im not sur if its just rumours or true?)
Also for any muslims who post next, is it Halal or Haram to shop there?

There was an article in the paper this week about this.
The thing is if they were doing that it would have to be declared publically (what I mean is in their company accounts)
No it is rubbish whipped up by a fringe communist group who want them to not import anymore fruit/veggies from Israel.
I actually rang them a while back to see if my local store sold kosher stuff or had a list of products that was ingredient kosher.
The guy on the phone said 'none of our food is kosher.'
Bless!
I pointed out that some of it would be (fruit veg tea ) for starters.
But he didn't even know what it meant.
So yeah go figure:D
P.S There was also a boycott of an organic health food store for the same reason:rolleyes:
P.P.S Salvation Army is a christian denomination that wears uniforms and plays music and givesto the poor

Thankyou! Its just alot of muslims nowadays fall into the conspiracy trap and i dont know what to believe and i LOVE M&S puddings, especially that profiterole pudding. Mmmmm!
Theres nothing wrong with buying, as in M&S, from Israel BUT funding its army is. Im not really Anti Israeli, just Anti-occupation, if theres such a thing:D
If something is morally wrong or right its called Haraam Halal respectively. So premarital relationships is Haraam. Marriage is Halal. Do you understand.:)
Everyones gone its like a chat b/w me and you. But its good im learning
I am a muslim revert and I am very careful what I eat. I am addicted to sweets and love haribo but wont touch it if it has gelatine in. Sweets with Beef Gelatine I will not touch as it is not Halal.
some of the comments on here are hilarious esp sezer.
a majority of muslims in the uk *as we assume food prepared in muslim countries is already halal*
a majority will check ingredients on the packagin to see if it has suitable for vegetarians - i'm sure this is the case for alot of jews too
in our house we have a set of foods which we regular get as we know they're ok. if we do fancy some different biscuits or chocs etc a quick read of the back is in order.
