We used to do a few pop songs.

    Nowhere Man - The Beatles
Streets of London - Ralph McTell
Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
    Among others.

We didn't appreciate it at the time but it's pretty forward thinking for a school in Huddersfield.

A very poor (in my opinion) Midi version can be found here. But it gives the idea.

    St. Martin's Church, Talke
Wow! Thanks so much for that. I couldn't find the song anywhere.

    Here's something weird…

As you know, I've been desperately trying to remember the tune to this. Also, lately I've been going to a new Church, and at the end of every single service, we always sing a song called "May God's Blessing". Well one Sunday I'd been trying to remember the tune, as usual. And then later on I was humming "May God's Blessing" — and it suddenly dawned on me that it's the same flipping tune! I don't know how I could not have noticed :o

The May God's Blessing can be heard on this site:
    http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Cabaret/6134/index.html

OK, they're not exactly the same. The time signature and rhythm is vastly different. And there are a few variations. But I'm certain that one is derived from the other!

Uh… I went to primary school in Huddersfield! (Meltham, actually.) That's where we sang the above song.

Do I know you or something? :D

When a knight won his spurs

When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old
He was gentle and brave he was gallant and bold
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand
For God and for valour he rode through the land

    "

My wife thought I was making this song up when I mentioned it, ditto Who Built The Ark. When a knight won his spurs was my fav.:D

This thread has got me thinking.

I also remember a song which thinking back is very un-PC accusing the French police of cowardice.

    Something along the lines of…..

“when we see a helpless woman
Or little boys that do no harm
We run them in, we run them in
To show them were the brave gendarmes”

Anyone else remember this? Late 70’s / early 80’s.

The children always sing this at the Year 6 leavers assembly at my son's primary school. When my eldest son left 3 years ago it reduced me to a snivelling wreck so I'm trying to steel myself for July when my youngest son leaves but even thinking about those innocent little voices singing "rows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air" makes me well up!

When we had our school concerts our last song was always, I Vow to Thee My Country.

I vow to thee my country all earthly things above
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love
The love that asks no questions
the love that stands the test

That lays upon the alter the dearest and the best
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price
The love that makes undaunted, the final sacrifice

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know

We may not count her armies, we may not see her king
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase
And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

It still gives me a tingle down my spine when I hear it sung today.

From infant and junior school circa 1990-1997 we had these classics ..random bits of lyrics i remember

' i was cold i was naked were you there were you there
and the creed and colour and name wont matter were you there ?'

'from the tiny ant to the elephant from the snake to the kangaroo '

Our book were sort of pink with kids singing on them and were called come and praise they had sticky back plastic on them which i enjoyed peeling off ,i remember in year six you finally got to sit on benchs at the back of the assembley hall not on the floor getting numb legs !!

I still remember these songs now! In our school the younger kids would sing "from the tiny ant" and then the year six kids would shout it back "FROM THE TINY ANT" haha...love it!

No-one else will care for them. Its up, Its up, Its up to youuu!

^^ i agree. i think we had the same books, there was a yellow one and a blue one. and the plastic was always coming off so you had to fight for a good book. And yeah the floor was FREEZING!

From the tiny ant was one of the songs people always chose.

I've been having fun trying to remember all the songs we sung in primary school in the 80s. I've counted 34 so far but I'm sure there are loads more and I'd love to hear your lists!

What songs did/do you sing? Or which songbook? What words did you change deliberately?

Here are all the ones I can remember…

    • We Plough The Fields And Scatter
    • Lord of the Dance
    • He's Got the Whole World In His Hands
    • Give Me Joy in My Heart (Oil in my Lamp) (Sing Hosanna)
    • Make Me a Channel of Your Peace
    • Kum Ba Yah

Oooh brings back the memories. These were some of my fave songs. :D;)

    also one which went -

Down by the fence at the bottom of the garden,
Twigwidge lives in an old oak tree.

Harambee, its a Kenyan song about coming together...
"We can pull together in the places that we work, making friends with lonely folk and learning how to give. So lets join hands and show our love for everyone today and use the word that says it all, that word is Harambee."

    Children Of The Lord
"We are children of the Lord, sons and daughters of life. We are children of the Lord and we want to walk in God's light."

    The Growing Song
"Fish grow fins to tickle and wriggle and swim. Birds grow beaks to peck and pick, Im growing up to be me."

    Thank You God For Autumn
"The Autumn is round us. The close of the year, the evenings grow cooler as Winter draws near. Thank you God for Autumn.Thank you God for Autumn.
The Autumn brings new things, new teachers, new friends. New jumpers and warm coats as summer now ends. Thank you God for Autumn. Thank you God for Autumn."

    Bind Us Together Lord

He's Got The Whole World In His Hands

One more step along the world I go,

    One more step along the world I go;

From the old things to the new

Keep me travelling along with you.

    And it’s from the old I travel to the new;

Keep me travelling along with you.

Round the corner of the world I turn,

    More and more about the world I learn;

All the new things that I see

You’ll be looking at along with me:

Without fail someone would always say round too soon which lead to our head teachers yelling 'patience now children' XD!! Good times.

We sang that in year 6, a few days before we left. Everyone cried their eyes out!

"And the trees of the fields shall clap their hands"
Anyone know this one? I can't remember the rest of the words. :o

You shall go out with joy and be led fourth with peace,
and the mountains on the hills will (la la la la la la),
And they shall clap shall clap their hands.

And the trees of the fields shall clap their hands x 3
and you'll go out with joy!
