Hello,

I would like some advice on weekend destinations in England (only). I'd like somewhere...

1/picturesque (beach, port or countryside, I don't mind)
2/with shops, cafe's...
3/...but with good transport links so I can take a day trip to a big/main city

(I live in London btw so preferably nowhere around here)

Thanks! :)

Thankyou! I'll look into those. What about Devon? Has anyone been there? It looked picturesque (from the coach window). I've been to Newquay, Cornwall and that was lovely.

Bournemouth, The New Forest, Sandbanks, Alum Chine, etc. All those areas in Dorset are absolutely gorgeous. :)

Warwick, where I live, is always good for a weekend away (except for me obviously cause I, um, live here..) We've got lots of attractions such as the Castle, lots to see and do in the town centre, Stratford upon Avon is a 20 minute drive away and Birmingham is only 40 minutes away on the train.

Have a good time, wherever you decide to go xx:)

Isle of Wight. Plenty to do on the island itself, nice beaches, nice countryside, and then a short 10 minute trip on a hovercraft (or 15 minutes on a Catamaran, sp?) will get you into Portsmouth for your city hit. Can get trains from Waterloo that take you down to Portsmouth in about 1hr 45 mins I think, so easy from London too.

The lake district is good. Lakes instead of beaches?
You can go to carlisle for a day trip. Keswick is great too.
The lakes won Britain's best view thing on ITV last year.

I was going to suggest Devon, Torquay is really nice for shopping and so on, but it's pretty lovely round there too

Bath, absolutely the most beautiful city in England, easy to get to from London, lovely hotels and B&Bs, great cafés and restaurants, fantastic shopping, you can take a day trip to Bristol, outstanding buildings and some old baths that are quite interesting to look at as well.

Brighton's great for a weekend away too. Try ringing some pubs for accommodation though rather than the hotels, as they're charging an arm & a leg this weekend because of the Bank Holiday. I'm scooting off there by Saturday morning - I've haggled a free stay in a pub that I like down there in return for singing Sunday night in their bar - they've heard me sing before, so they know they're getting a good deal. :D
