1. Community Radio is continuing to develop in the UK with 48 applications being submitted to Ofcom to operate such stations in the East and South East of England. All the applications will be published online shortly, from groups in the East and South of East England (excluding Greater London and other areas within the M25) wanting to win a five year FM (or medium wave) licence. More
2. The Digital Radio Development Bureau has launched a Christmas marketing campaign to push DAB stations this Christmas, including Planet Rock which has just unveiled a new logo and website. More
3. MOJO Radio ceased broadcasting at 7pm on Sunday 30th November.
4. GMG Radio out-going chief executive John Myers takes time out to talk about the most important part of your radio station - the talent - and how hard work is the only way to make it to the top. Read On
5. Commercial radio news supplier IRN has ended its 16-year relationship with ITN by awarding the contract for the supply national and international news service to Sky News. More
6. Digital radio listening has continued to increase in popularity despite the commercial sector's struggle to make the new platform pay. More

Newsie Bits
1. On Wednesday 3rd December Five is making some changes; If you have set your Sky+ box both SD & HD to record stuff on Five after this date you will have to delete them on the Afternoon of the 3rd and reprogramme them including any series link, from the Sky Guide. Anything recorded before the 3rd will be OK to watch and is not affected. Call 08442 410018 if you have problems or further queries. From what I am able to ascertain this just affects Scotland
2. SES Astra has announced the signing of a long-term contract for the broadcast of MTVNHD in France. The service will be transmitted round-the-clock from 19.2 degrees East and part of CanalSat’s HD option. Separately, MTV Networks International has announced launches on Sky in the UK and HOT in Israel before the end of the year. More
3. RTE has postponed the planned launch of its international station for the Irish community in Britain, citing straitened financial circumstances. More (MacLondon)
4. "Sky" TV warranty rogues Satellite Protection Services shut down
5. Targeted advertising has been promised for years, but it seems Sky will reportedly launch such a service in 2011. According to Brand Republic, Sky is working internally on a project called Smart TV which has the ability to allow advertisers to beam specific ads to individual homes. More
6. Five is set to launch a dedicated children's channel following the success of its kids' strand Milkshake More (Sky Fan)
7. Channel 4 is to close its Red Button and mobile TV divisions, with the potential loss of four jobs, and bringing an end to interactive advertising on the channel. The move comes almost ten years to the day that Red Button activities began on UK television. More
8. Sky has said a new EPG software version 3.7 will be downloaded to boxes "shortly". Main changes seem to be that auto standby will be applied to non Sky+ boxes (can be disabled, as with Sky+ boxes); a new facility "Direct Subscription Upgrade" will allow on-screen subscription (via an interactive application) by "pressing red" to those pay channels which enable the facility; and removal of the HD listings from SD boxes (replaced by a msg "...to receive HD call.."; plus some quite obscure fixes to software on certain box models re supporting interactive applications (Strathclyde)
9. Sky has now formally told channels that they're going to start removing all HD listings from SD boxes with new software versions, starting November (and will take 6 months to complete). This was forecast by Sky earlier in the year. A bit of a mixed blessing: gone will be the irritation of all the channels you can't watch (if you only have an SD box); but at the same time, the SD owners will have less temptation to switch to HD, since they won't see the HD channels listed. (Strathclyde)
10. The new HD EPG has now been pushed back towards Xmas, Sky say they are still testing and are having problems, ie; bugs & problems in the main style EPG line up. Also Ireland & UK have different numbers eg; RTE 1 is on 101 in Ireland as BBC1 is 101 in the UK. (digitalsatman/omar comerford)
The Digital Switchover News
1. Eight out of ten shops in the West Country are now giving correct advice and explaining the switchover to digital television, according to new research released by Digital UK. [utl=www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?class=countries&subclass=0&id=3203]More
2. Digital UK has published a list of digital terrestrial TV receivers and integrated digital TVs which won't work after your local digital switchover. More
3. More than a third of people in the West Country TV region still need to convert all their TVs from analogue to digital television ahead of switchover next year, according to figures released by Digital UK. More
4. Digital UK has announced that on-screen messages about switchover are appearing on analogue TV channels in Exeter. In six months' time (6th May 2009), Exeter will become the first city in the UK to start the switchover to digital television. Exeter is served by the Stockland Hill transmitter group which also serves parts of Devon, Somerset and Dorset. More
5. Ireland has started a countdown to launch next-gen digital terrestrial TV by autumn 2009. The system will use highly efficient MPEG-4 compression instead of the MPEG-2 system used on Freeview in the UK. Story.
6. Sat4Free, the satellite marketing concept developed by Irish Power Products in association with British consumer electronics distributor Alba, has shut down its website just a week after its launch claiming “routine maintenance”. More
7. Ofcom has admitted that almost 250,000 UK homes will lose any sort of terrestrial signal when analogue TV is switched off. Many experts think the numbers might be much higher More Readers wanting a detailed examination of Ofcom’s figure can see the document can do so here (in PDF format) (rapidtvnews)

9. Digital UK has revealed the dates for the digital switchover in Cumbria, south-west Scotland and the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man will start switching to digital on 18th June 2009, when analogue signals are turned off at the Douglas transmitter group. Then, six days later on 24th June 2009, almost all areas of Cumbria, together with South-West Scotland, will start switching as analogue signals are turned off at the Caldbeck transmitter group. This announcement covers the remaining parts of the Border TV region. Story
10. Digital UK has announced that the West Country TV region will start the next faze of switch to digital terrestrial television, on 8th April, 2009. Analogue broadcasts will be turned off first at the Beacon Hill transmitter group, followed by the Stockland Hill transmitter group on 6th May, 2009. In North Devon the switchover will begin on 1st July and be completed on 29th July. The West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly regions will begin to lose the analogue signal on 8th July with switchover completing on 5th August. The Caradon hill transmitter will cease analogue broadcasting to Plymouth, parts of Devon and East Cornwall four days later. Commercial multiplexes will broadcast at higher power and on new frequencies at the Huntshaw Cross transmitter in North Devon and Redruth transmitter in West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly from 30th September 2009. More Here and Here
11. Digital UK has announced the date for the start of the switchover to digital television in Wales. West Wales will be the first area to switch to digital, starting with the Kilvey Hill transmitter group, serving the Swansea area, on 12th August, 2009. This will be followed by the Preseli transmitter group, serving South West Wales, and the Carmel transmitter group, serving parts of South and Central Wales, on 19th August and 26th August respectively. Dates for other parts of the Wales will be announced in the coming months. In Full
12. Digital UK has announced the date for the digital switchover in North-West England. Three million homes across the north-west will start switching to digital on 4th November 2009 when analogue signals are turned off at the Winter Hill transmitter group (the Granada TV region). More
13. The dates for Digital switchover for Moel-Y-Parc, Llandonna and Long Mountain have been announced ;
Llandonna 21 Oct 09-18 Nov 09
Moel Y Parc 28 Oct 09-25 Nov 09
Winter Hill 4 Nov 09- 2 Dec 09
Long Mountain 4 Nov 09- 3 Dec 09

• Sky Expect growth in HDTV There has been some market concern that the economic downturn will have affected Sky's numbers, including a worrying report from Continental Research last week that suggested Sky's self-imposed 10m subscriber target (by 2010) would be missed. More
• Danielle Nagler, head of HDTV at BBC Vision, made the announcement on the BBC Internet Blog that the DOGs on BBC HD will be turned off for films and drama and turned down for most other shows. More
• Ocean Blue is developing the first software range to power the next generation of high definition televisions. According to Ocean Blue, their new Sunrise software, will enable viewers, for the first time, to receive HD, digital, and analogue transmissions on a single chip within an LCD or Plasma TV. The software will also enable inbuilt power saving features and plug in USB devices. More More here
• As consumers we should know better than to rely or depend on a technology lasting more than five minutes. Now it seems the Blu-ray disk technology, long described as the “Holy Grail” of home entertainment, has only five years of life left in it, according to someone very close to the product. Story
• Research by Ipsos-Mori suggests the cost of high-definition (HD) subscription services is putting off viewers from taking up the new technology. Ipsos-Mori found that just 16% of viewers with HD sets actually subscribed to an HD service. More
