I use the iPhone, and there are similar services for other mobiles. At the moment the mobile phone network is the only close to reliable way to receive a data signal on the move, but the technology will evolve. It may not yet be affordable to everyone, but then again neither is Sky, which is similarly priced.
This is my entire point, so I don't understand why you have to disagree with my definition of radio and how I think that journalists and broadcasters have more of a duty to be accurate in their wording.
I don't listen to their music output so would not like to comment on that, but the Talk output, from what I have heard, is beyond bad.
Fair Enough on the music. I'm not sure if it's your cup of tea or not but give it a listen and see what you think. Some cracking tunes on there that Heart etc just don't play.
Well good on Play in expanding their output. I only started listening to Play when Boyd moved over, they have some good presenters...would like to know how they are funding all this though.....
Giving it to former guests who have zero presenting skills would not be good, but actually getting proper presenters who discuss varied subjects would sound very good.
I would like Joypod to be expanded to 2 hours.
Very good dry humour!
Joypod is the most pointless show on there. The show is them mentioning what computer games they've played that week and saying that they're 'great' or 'amazing' or some other superlative, without telling us what the games are actually about or why they think they're 'great'.
The guest on last night began by saying, "I've not been playing much this week. I've had too much work." Who cares?
They also talked about 'red ring' and 'coz play', which they had a good laugh about, but without any attempt at an explanation for the listeners.
Here are a few quotations from the show that I posted at the time on Skype: "It looks fantastic. It runs brilliantly." "It is brilliant. It really, really is great. It's that bloomin' good." "I do like this music. It is excellent." "I think it's best thing on DS." "It's absolutely fantastic." "It is an absolutely excellent game." "The music that is on it is very, very good." "It's absolutely... It's a very, very impressive game. It's absolutely amazing."
Not once did they qualify any of that.
Thank God the radio forum on this site isn't like that.
Look, I don't make comments without listening first. I even went back last night and had a listen randomly. The woman who was presenting was shockingly amateurish. Actually to call her that is an insult to amateurs. Not only was she a terrible presenter but she was also the newsreader and could barely read.
I couldn't stop laughing at how bad it was. She really was struggling. She read a news story from a script and attempted to give her thoughts, quickly followed by asking the listener what they thought, giving out the contact details, and asking again; and all this was repeated many, many times throughout the two-hour show, apart from the first twenty minutes where there was an interview.
She only got two callers; the second, who is a regular caller to Tommy Boyd who usually does the slot, had called up not being able to listen to the show because he was on the road.
Until recently she was reguarly on with Tommy Boyd, laughing like Mutley and agreeing with everything Boyd said by saying 'mm-hmm' and 'yeah' again and again whenever he spoke.
I'm glad to hear about the news of Jon Gaunt moving on a minority station.
Lets hope that Right-Wing Maniac stays there and never makes a comeback on Mainstream Radio:cool:
Grief, Why did talkSPORT employ that guy in the first place:(

That show wasn't really representative of a typical show as the host was not presenting and they seldom have those monosyllabic guests on.
They do though fit within your definition of "radio".
Err...no...that's my point, they are not radios in any real sense of the word. They do not broadcast within the frequencies whic I defined as 'radio'. Can you not read? They do however provide internet feeds from many actual radio stations.
This stuff is really simple, I don't understand why you are having such trouble grasping it. Perhaps that is why you haven't yet grasped how terrible the Talk strand on PlayRadio is.
Again, I am willing to be proved wrong. Give me any two hours that you would like me to download of playradio's talk output, that you think rises to the heights of sub-mediocrity and above, I will be happy to listen and change my mind as the case me be. Until then, you're just talking rubbish.

that with all due respect is the biggest load of rubbish i ever heard. Of course it's radio. Move on from the the 80s i would say. I'm sure people used to say FM wasnt real radio. 'nuff said

Nuff said? Nothing said, more like. It's people like you who are afraid of pointing out a product's limitations who totally impede progress.

Interestingly enough, I thought at the time she sounded like a sidewoman/person. It's a shame they don't have her on with Tommy Boyd now, perfect example of not using resources properly. I really doubt he would be doing this kind of BNP nonsense show if he had a woman on the show with him. He becomes so different and all sensitive when he's got a woman on with him.

The whole BNP thing with Tommy is getting dull, he has his tongue so far up Simon Darby's backside he know's what his had for Breakfast!

Weird isn't it. He lets Simon Darby have free reign and then starts nitpicking at listeners comments if they are anti BNP or just refuses to read the e-mailed questions to Simon Darby for slightly spurious reasons.
Has he got round to talking about ornithology with Mr Darby yet?
Luckily I only listen on podcast, so I generally spool through the BNP love fest and listen to the bit of the show that's left.

Yes I agree, I think Tommy is doing this because it gives some publicity to Play Talk and it gets people talking but it's getting dull now.
Also its funny how every time Simon Darby is on the show, the phone lines break down or the Skype is 'playing up' its almost like his shielding Simon Darby.

Yeah I've noticed that. Then when people e-mail in the more difficult questions, he waits till Simon Darby has gone and then gives a half baked excuse as to why he hasn't asked it. Really lame and to be honest a bit dull and repetitive.
OK there is more chance of me nitting fog than Play Talk going on national DAB but I'd rather hhave that on their than a national relay of LBC - Play 2 would do something for extending listener choice if that was on DAB to.

mmm First i agree about play talk purely because ofcom despite allowing all sorts would still have a fit at some of the things said and talked about. As for LBC going national thats a good thing because there is little talk radio in the UK as it is. If Play 2 were to go on DAB nationally it would make getting a radio just for that station worth it IMHO
I Really Don't think that either Play Talk UK or Play 2 UK will fill the giant gaps on the Digital One Multiplex, (or any other Play Radio UK Station on that matter) mainly because they probably have enouth broadcasting costs as it is Streaming their current stations Online without paying £90'000 a year , per station, for Digital One Coverage, maybe in years to come (if everyone hasn't given up on DAB), my guess at the five new Digital One stations are 1) BFBS (Confirmed for April) 2) Jazz FM 3) LBC 97.3 (or a National Spin-Off Version) 3) BBC Asian Network (For better Audio Quality) 4) Smooth Radio (? Region) 5) Sky News Radio (Which would be a newly Launched Station, Originally planned for Channel 4's Multiplex)
The presenters on Play Radio boast about being Internet-only because they're not subject to OFCOM regulation, but the only advantages they take from this are getting to say f*ck and bugger and talking flippantly about sex.
They claim Play Talk is 'radio you won't hear anywhere else', which is funny because at least three of their show formats can also be heard on FM station City Talk. Duncan Barkes took the idea of the show he did with Tommy Boyd et al on Play Radio to City Talk and called it Bloke Talk, which funnily enough Barkes claims is the only show of its type on radio. Play Radio have Girls, Girls, Girls and City Talk have Girl Talk, and both use the Here Comes the Girls song from the TV adverts. Both have a gadget show, where the presenter talks about the latest gadgets and callers ring up with their computer problems. Fevzi, who does the show on Play Radio, is on there because he used to do the same thing on Mike Mendoza's show on talkSPORT and LBC!
A lot of Play Radio's output is the type of guff you'd expect to hear on BBC local radio. It's not surprising that several of the presenters used to work on BBC Southern Counties. And then there's Tommy Boyd playing the same YouTube clips over and over again...

You wasted your opportunity with Cathrine Cat Oscar. Why didn't you ask for a discount on a damn good spanking?

Red ring refers to a common fault with the video games console xbox 360.
Coz play short for costume play. The act of nerds dressing up as a cartoon/film/video game character.
Would you expect Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear to explain what horse power or understeer is to its enthusiast viewers?
Isn't horse power self explanatory? And what on Earth is understeer? Is that where you would find a bull castrator?
That would ruin the whole 'not governed by Ofcom' thing as well.
Correct thats why I'd want Play 2 UK instead
