The Culture is characterised by being a post-scarcity society (meaning that its advanced technologies provide practically limitless material wealth and comforts for everyone for free, having all but abolished the concept of possessions), by having overcome almost all physical constraints on life (including disease and death) and by being an almost totally egalitarian, stable society without the use of any form of force or compulsion, except where necessary to protect others.
It doesn't have to be the extreme ends of either capitalism or communism, it can be a system which takes the best aspects of whatever political ideology.
I'm getting sick of the presumption that politics have to be left or they have to be right.
No wonder nothing works if people think in such a linear way based on a left to right scale.

Since the last time that true communism (or socialism) were tried was in the time of Jesus nobody really knows what it is like to live under either. The governments that have claimed to be one or the other have never been close to the real thing.
I like to think I'm a socialist. But it's been so long since we've had a government that reflects socialistic values, I'm not sure what it means anymore.
A socialist/capitalist hybrid would be preferable. The current economic model is way off with the likes of Goodwin earning millions for bringing down a bank.

to be fair thats just a systematic mistake/hole that developed and isn't indicative of a problem with the entire system.
Socialism and communism would be wonderful ideals, if it wasn't for money and power. Oh, and the seemingly innate urge to kill your people.
Is this inspired by the criminal damage to that banker blokey's house that was claimed by an 'anti-capitalist' mob? If we were to learn that the culprits were all 'Twittering' about it whilst plugged into their I-Pods and phones, I would try and feign surprise.

you forgot about freedom and free will. communist systems always fail because they treat people like blank slate robots to be smashed into productive units for the good of the state.
this never works in reality without thugs.

And the vast majority of people in capitalist systems are moulded from an early age into worker drones and good little consumers where they can never be truly happy because they are convinced that what they currently have is never enough.

You don't need to mould something where it already fits. Most folk are innately shallow and sallow, which is probably nature trying to give us a Darwinian hint.

Yes I would (or am I suppossed to choose between the two?)
Capitalism, socialism or communism?
Capitalism, socialism, communism, totalitarianism.
So what'll it be?
Ah right so I was supposed to choose
Ok then, Socialiam.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.
I choose this too.
I would get plenty of sex though, right?
Only with willing partners and there might be some aliens involved. BTW people in The Culture can change sex .
Check out the first track here: Gordon Brown!
Can't help thinking of Ernie, the fastest Milkman with hardcore political lyrics at some points! lol
Stuff the Nanny State!
