Saw this yesterday at a digital screening. Excellent film. Very reverential towards the original series but still an exciting modern style film with great effects and a decent storyline. I think the opening sequence was one of the best I've seen for a while and actually quite emotional.
I also came out of the cinema desperately wanting to see a sequel, and I haven't felt like that for a long time.

seeeing the trailors i thought the young kirk was just a little too young but no once the action starts you start to believe he is kirk
well worth seeing
I might go watch it again a few weeks
Other things that don't make sense/bugged me
I know he wants revenge badly but how could Nero - a miner not a wormhole scientist - be sure that Spock would come through the wormhole in his lifetime or even at all? And Nero barely aged in 25 years.
Pegg - I love the guy but Scotty is introduced way too late in the flick and I just couldn't get used to the accent. The guy who played the Scots doctor in Stargate Atlantis is in the film for 2 secs and I kept thinking 'actually he'd have been a better choice.'
On the plus side, Karl Urban was superb as Bones and Pine was good too.
Hopefully the next film will have a better plot.
Oh, and you have to remember Romulans are related to Vulcans so live to a great age, 25 years to them is nothing. T'Pol was 63 in Enterprise.
Overall great film, would recommend it. Hope it proves sucessful so Paramount decide to comission more.
Granted, but even Spock goes grey eventually.
Eventually is the right word, he is in his mid 100's
Fair enough
Amusingly, the Guardian review refers to Nero as a Klingon!
According to Star Trek Online, Romulas and Remus are destroyed in the year (regular year) 2387, since Spock was born in 2230 that makes him 157 in the film.
I also came out of the cinema thirsty for a sequel, or even a television series (which given the background of a lot of the young actors shouldn't be that impossible).
Excellent, wow.
Ticks all my boxes and then some.
I'll give my verdict tonight when i get back
Although I've just had a quick peek at the Startrek.com boards... and that's where you'll find comments like that.
As for me... I loved it!! Bring on Trek 2.1
Only the very end seemed misjudged (you'll know what I mean if you've seen it) - suddenly it was just a TV spin-off. And the end titles may a homage but they just look cheap.
However I think I found a flaw (hiding it though)
Karl Urban gave the truest character 'interpretation' for me.
Laughed at poor Checkov's computer pronunciation problems
Can't wait to go and see it again.
Should I start at the very beginning with this latest film? Is that the best way?
Was in fear of a "phantom menace" but thankfully there were no JarJar Binks moments at all, I thought the references to the other movies and other series were fantastic, the casting was utter brilliant, Karl Urban totally nailed the McCoy role as did Zachary Quinto, he WAS Spock, at no point did I think of Sylar.
There was the spark of chemistry between the crew which could have so easily been missing, it was funny without being too "Red Dwarf", it also caught the fun and excitement of the original Star Trek without the nerdy edge to The Next Generation.
All in all an excellent film and I'm seriously tempted to see it again.
I did, but just cant place it.
That dude is old. Older than Methuselah.
Bones was cool though, his "Damn it man!" was on the money!
Cool film
It was great! I've read some of the reviewers comments about the plot, but they need to get some perspective. it is a big screen sci-fi blockbuster, it's not meant to be shakespeare.
I've never been a fan of the use of time-travel elements, but really think Abrams got it right here. the way he has re-booted the series, while preserving the heritage i think shows how much he cared about getting it right.
In terms of the other posts here, i agree, 'bones' was a work of genius and he easily had the best scences.
If you're unsure, go and see it. You will be entertained!
Hmm tricky one. Some may say that you should start from the originals and then watch this BUT I don't think you need to. This film is a perfect introduction to all the characters.
............
And talking of characterisation. Did anyone notice the perfect Shatnerism that Pine gave at the end?
The acting was top notch. Zachary Quinto was Spock, no doubt about it, and Karl Urban stole the show. I was wary of Chris Pine because he's so young but he really impressed me and I was sold on his take on Kirk by the end of the film. There wasn't anyone in the cast who wasn't worthy and the chemistry between everyone was amazing - I could believe they would go on to be a legendary team in the future.
I'll be seeing the film again, definitely. It looked really beautiful on the big screen.
One question though: Is the Spock/Uhuru thing new to this movie as I don't recall there ever being any feelings between them before?
I thought it was part of the whole Kirk v. Spock rivalry storyline rather than something which would have been seen in the other films and TV episodes. But I'm not a major Star Trek fan - I went to see it because it's had great reviews, which it certainly lived up to.
By the way, hats off to the Shepherds Bush Vue for their sensitive handling of the house lights. Not only did they switch them on as soon as the end titles began, they actually left them on for the first five minutes of the film!
