Why do some people become completely obsessed with one HM?

I know there is some person here who is obsessed with Luke and Bex, and now another who really is OTT about Karly.

Are these people for real? or just put here to raise that HM's profile? (I really hope this is the reason)

If they are for real, I find it quite unnerving to think we are among people who could possibly be a bit "sick" (can't think of a better word) :o

All I can think of is "Misery" when I read their posts!

What I don't understand, is when some forumites become defensive of their chosen favourite, beyond all reason

... as if their favourite is perfect in every way, and any iffy behaviour must be 'explained away' or dismissed as irrelevant, at all costs

I could understand it, if a poster was a relative, or friend of a particular housemate ... but getting all lairy just because someone posts something negative is baffling

Its interesting actually. I think the reason behind it could be something like this -

Viewers, or posters, make a decision to support a housemate, based on their judgement of that housemates personality. Obviously, people like to think that their judgement is superior, and correct, so when one decides to insult a housemate, that a viewer, or poster, has chosen to support, some will see this as a peronal attack on their judgement, and taste, and may take the comments to heart.

The bottom line - A fan will get offended if you insult their personal taste, and judgement.

Yep, very true, but if we're being honest about it, I think we are all a bit like that once we've found a housemate that we support. It makes for some good debates though.....well sometimes it does. :)

However in response to the OP's point about obsessives and where you see thread after thread about that fm's favourite, then I do wonder if there's some ulterior motive to put people off that particular hm as opposed to supporting them.

To answer the OP's question, I think the realistic answer is that something is missing from their lives.

To become completely obsessed with a person on the television, wether it be a big brother housemate, or a soap actor, usually means that one is trying to fill a gap - Something that is missing from their life.

Most people have some kind of hobby, or interest, and many of us keep ourselves busy, due to work obligations, socialising, and various activities. However, some of us have very little to do, with a whole heap of time on their hands. These are usually the ones who find the time to become obsessed with a television personality. The type with little, or no social life, could easily become obsessed with a big brother housemate - Filling a gap.

I am not trying to be horrible by the way, just being honest.

Don't be fooled by the supposed Karly 'fans' that are making the excessive amount of threads.

They aren't real Karly fans, they are trying to sabotage her chances in a mocking way.

The 'fanboy/girl' phenomenon extends to all sorts of things like TV shows and political parties....even operating systems and internet browsers. It's loopy.

People get locked into finding ways to defend what they would realise is laughable if they took the time to step back...and consequently ignore the opportunity to question their own beliefs and prejudices and bias and develop a more balanced and consistent outlook.

No doubt some of them get off on the 'battle' which is fair enough but it's not my bag.

You may well be right .....

    ..... or wrong .....

    ;)

IMO, it's not that simple and the assumption implies no consideration of the individual .....

.... additionally, what is "some kind of hobby, or interest" but a way to kill time .....

    ;)

I should think so. I could be half right, and half wrong though - Would that mean I'm on the fence?

You make some good points. People identify with a person more and almost feel like they're in a form of relationship with them over the period of BB and like you said with other TV shows, politicians and also other celebrities etc.

I think it works equally in the other direction when you find a HM, celeb etc that you don't like you will find people who will slag them off to the highest level and never take on board anybody else's view of why there maybe good things about that person.

I don't think its particularly strange - i just think it's human nature to form some sort of bond to like the person and equally dislike them.
