I got on the bus today and sat on a wallet. I opened said wallet and it was crammed with cash, like someone's wages or savings. I promptly turned in to the bus driver and made him promise he would turn it in. Now I am worried I should have kept it, tried to identify the person and rang them to come to my house and collect it. Perhaps I should have handed it to the police. Keeping it was out of the question because I classify that as stealing or being dishonest and I like my integrity.
I told my husband and he is raging. He couldn't believe I handed it back! I said, we have had a lot of good fortune in the past few weeks and I couldn't live with myself for taking it. He said, I should have at least turned it in to the police and they would have given it to me if someone hadn't reclaimed it, but my mind doesn't work that way. I have lost my wallet and my first thought is to ring all of the shops and transport I have been on to see if someone has turned it in.
Am I a mug, or would you have done the same? If the bus driver steals it, then on his head be it.

I would contact the bus company and make sure it got handed in.
edit - Oooh Fi got in just before me
On a practical note I doubt an easily identified bus driver would take the chance of pocketing the dosh. You could ring the bus company to check.
Only slight worry I would have is the bus driver, is there a party being held in the bus depot tonight being paid for from that wallet lol...
Well done you
Yes. If the person who lost the wallet rings them and it hasn't been handed in then, the bus company are none the wiser and the guy has no comeback - but if you, independently, have called them to report that you found it and handed in, then the driver is soooooooooooo busted.
I think you did the right thing, but ring the bus company and let them no what route no you were on and what time it was so they can no what bus driver has the money, so that way if he pockets it, he gets what he deserves, and the cash goes back to its owners
One thing though, did you notice any ID in the wallet? If there was then it should find it's way back to the owner pretty soon hopefully.
As for your (& hubby's) conscience, don't worry about it. You did the right thing on balance, the person may have really needed the cash to pay bills & food etc. It may have slipped out, or got pushed out of his trouser pocket by accident. We'd all be sick if we happened to lose a couple/few hundred quid or so.
Just for good karma, if the Bus Depot still has it, make sure you tell them and The Police your details - you may get a few quid from the rightful owner if they are half decent.
i hope the wallet is reclaimed by its rightful owner and you get a reward from him as a gesture of appreciation... i know i would if it was me.
Anyway there may be CCTV on the bus
For the record, I once dropped my wallet as I was getting in my car. Someone found it in the car park, took the trouble to look my name up in the phone book, and called me. Wouldn't take a reward, so their kids got a treat.
Yup
My friend found £400 rolled up and tied with an elastic band on the street. She handed it in to the police, who gave it back to her 4 weeks later when it hadn't been claimed.
did they say if the bus driver had handed it in?
from what you say it doesn't sound as if they were already aware of it
I lost a carrier bag with my cheque book and credit cards in it on the tube in London.
Luckily I got it back and it was found by an American.
That's good news.
You did exactly what I would have done - I wouldn't have wanted to put it in my bag in case anyone thought I was nicking it. And then I would worry afterwards that the driver might have kept it.
But - peeps are right, there will be CCTV, and I think it's most likely the driver would have handed it in. You could contact the garage again & make sure that he did. From the time & route, surely they'll be able to work out which driver it was.
Well in all honesty I'm not sure that I would hand in a bunch of random bank notes, but the wallet I probably would have contacted the person to give it back.
NOW if you found £10,000 in cash in a carrier bag,and you thought it might have been drug money......would you hand it in ??????
