To my mind, neither Rangers nor Celtic would have the right to sell their away games, which are what attract the highest audiences.

But that wouldn't stop them thinking they could do it, of course...

"The meeting was a chance for us to update them on where we are with the discussions.

"We ran them through a number of different options and got some feedback, but there was no formal decision-making."

I wonder what the other options are:confused:

*Hold off to see if a higher bid comes in?

Really though it's bad news about the time it's taking. Not just SPL nobody knows where the FA Cup, World cup matches, UFC is going. :(

Perhaps they've got an offer from the BBC? A two year deal similar to the one they stuck in 2002 might be a good stop gap measure. By 2011 ESPN might be out of Sky's pocket and desperate for more content.

    (

Who would another bid come in from? Neither the BBC or STV have the cash so it leaves Sky and ESPN.

A single bid from Sky would be the prefered option as there is no way I am shelling out 2 subs for SPL games. If Sky wanted to go it alone however, wouldn't they have done that in the first place?

    i agree 2 subs is a joke

... i was also thinkin about whether the spl could set up a channel, eg ... would it have enough different programs to attract 10quid a month

obv they could show 3 matches at the weekend ... they could show europa league and CL league matches with scottish teams in them (however, the BBC mite already have the rights to the europa league games?)

but they could also show the U21 and U19 games and scotland internationals

and of course they could have a phone in and show "legendary matches" like the ones you used to get on Rangers and Celtic TV ... i think if the SPL put a lot of effort into it and charged 10 a month ... i would probably go for it!

I really believe that the SPL should now hold out on this and demand that the ESPN subscription price goes down - it is absolutely unrealistic and destined to fail, just like Setanta. If that means a 20% drop from ESPN side of the dual offer, that would still offer the SPL greater security over what would be a 5 year deal.

ESPN will be cashing in big bucks. Half price SPL helped by new best friends Sky.

That and high sub charges sees them fork out less and get plenty of cash from Sky and standalone subs.

FA Cup doesn't start until November, so there's plenty of time on that front

    Article from Media Guardian suggests:

-vote on Sky/ESPN proposal could take place next Thursday.
    -Sky/ESPN favour 5-year deal.
    -some clubs prefer 2-year deal.
-Sky possibly looking for less than 20 of the 60 live games, with Old Firm matches their key target.

If Sky take few matches then I'll be forced into a ESPN sub..great.

I may have to take Sky Sports 1 + ESPN at £20 for both. But if they decide to put the SPL on Sky Sports 2 that's me going to miss the old firm games.

Great...what a mess this is going to be and cost alot more in the long run. It would be cheaper to let sky take all the sport and slowly up the price as they do. :p

    Out of interest...

If Sky take some SPL matches will they say for example put the old firm on Sky Sports 1? I noticed the Scottish cup was always on Sky Sports 2 did they ever broadcast Scottish cup on 1?

What will Sky Sports 1 broadcast next season? Are all the main matches on 1?

All of Sky's big football matches are broadcasted on SkySports 1 so with that in mind i wound'nt mind betting that if Sky did get the big Celtic Rangers games they would also be on their main channel.

Except the Champions League and most midweek Premier League games.

But nearly all the Premier League matches are on SS1.

So would you recommend just taking Sky Sports 1? I believe it's £11?

I'm trying to find past listings but from memory the average Saturday is a Championship game then a EPL match. Are the major Champions League matches like Man u also Sky Sports 1?

I guess there would be no Scottish cup given last years final was on SS2?

I'll have to consider the value then.

ITV have some Champions League anyway.

One game per matchweek (first pick on a Wednesday).

Looks like the SPL see no long-term future for their relationship with the bully boys at Sky/ESPN. Not the best of starts to their five year broadcast "partnership"
Both Sky and ESPN played hard-ball with the SPL, warning that, unless positive noises were forthcoming, they could forget about the SPL becoming part of the new partnership between the broadcast giants, which will culminate in the launch of a new ESPN UK digital channel on August 3.

It's a strange strategy from them. I'm already feeling quite hostile towards ESPN, whereas I'd have been quite likely to subscribe if the earlier reports of an exclusive deal had come about.

Does anyone know roughly the going-rate to hire a company to provide OB facilities at a football match?

Say, on a contract basis to cover 60 games per seasons?
