I'll go along with that. I've got it on a compilation album,Golden Hour Of Simon Says. There's several other tracks from Loving Spoonful on it along with 1910 Fruitgum Company (who had the hit with Simon Says),Ohio Express,The Lemon Pipers and others.

What a great thread. Would be great if we could have similar ones for 20's -40's, the 50's, 70's, 80's and 90's.
I've enjoyed clicking on a few of the random links and heard a few great tracks which I downloaded.
Its a shame that there was much talent and great songs sung pre 1800's that never got recorded. There might welll have been some fantastic voices.
i chose the 60's because its my fav era and one that i am still discovering great tracks from.
i like traditional folk (pre 1800's), several groups/bands over the years have recorded versions of olde songs. the city waites and steeleye span for eg.

I agree with the sentiments about it being such a perfect pop song and also agree that it was an absolute tragedy that it was never a hit in the UK. I find it a sad indictment of the British record buying public of the day that such an excellent band (The Lovin' Spoonful) featuring such a brilliant songwriter (John Sebastian) only had two major UK hits ("Daydream" and "Summer In The City").

You're right, they won't! They did play two days ago! Try again in a couple of hours. Failing that, anyone interested should check these tracks out independently, they're all great songs and definitely worth a listen!

indeed, classic mid 60's american music... keen on a good melody were the americans, from motown, beach boys, association etc etc.
I've tried some of the earlier links on this thread, some are playing and some are not. Looks like a Youtube problem, which will hopefully be resolved very soon.

The last thing I'd call myself is a fan of Country and Western music, however, here are some Country-flavoured pop songs from the sixties that I really like:-

I think rhod was just having a laugh, the Puppini Sisters are indeed a modern act, but I think they're fantastic! (Not something you'll hear me say about any other modern act!)
I also happen to know Stephanie's uncle (Stephanie is the tall red-headed Puppini Sister).

That's easily remedied:-
The Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe In Magic? (1965)

Here are some other good Lovin' Spoonful tracks:-
Younger Girl (1965)
Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind? (1966)
Didn't Want To Have To Do It (1966)
Rain On The Roof (1966)
Darling Be Home Soon (1967)
they wont play
i like the loving spoonful, of course their 'biggy' 'summer in the city' is a 60's classic. one of the first 'summer' songs i remember.

Lovin' Spoonful should be in everyone's collection! Fantastic band.:)
Here's one from 1963 that was a big hit in the US but did nothing here, but you WILL know it.
Randy & The Rainbows - Denise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZk_df_sswc
The Standells - Rari
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8XMedD6jOE
Four songs from The Shadows Of Knight (terrible name, by the way, but a good band!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uVahzTl-6o
lol..i was gutted when i discovered 'denis' was a cover! (blondies version), i really liked early blondie and just thought it was their original.
Brenda Lee - I'm Sorry (1960)
Bobby Darin - Things (1962)
Marty Robbins - Devil Woman (1962)
The Lovin' Spoonful - Nashville Cats (1966)
Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood - Jackson (1967)
Wanda Jackson - Tongue Tied (1961)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76k7cL7qKuc
Nah, Blondie were always ripping people off - even Heart of Glass wasn't theirs.. ;)
I've just thought of another Country-flavoured pop song from the sixties that I really like:-
The Springfields - Silver Threads And Golden Needles (1962)
Excellent track! Wanda Jackson was without question the Queen of Rockabilly. Her version of this song is arguably better than the Elvis version:-
Wanda Jackson - Let's Have A Party (1960)
eh?...the puppini sisters are modern,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_Glass_(song)
oh hell... mike chapman was involved!
yep great track!
The Merseybeats - I Stand Accused
Tony Jackson - Fortune Teller
The Big Three - Some Other Guy
The Undertakers - Just A Little Bit
The Koobas - First Cut Is The Deepest
I love a bit of country pop....here's a great one from 1969:
Bobbie Gentry - Fancy
I'm also a sucker for this gem...
Skeeter Davis - End Of The World
