Mad Men, I can't think of another show that's managed to keep up its quality in writing, storylines and performances for 4 entire seasons. Even Six Feet Under, which I utterly adore, was a bit more patchy (but I still think it's one of the best tv shows ever made).
I love shows that are all about characters rather than plot.
I would say that is followed by M*A*S*H, Frasier and Friends, all I continue to watch when in the right mood. They have got to be good, if after all this time and all the repeats, I still continue to watch them.
I'll agree with that for the mid-70s Tom Baker years. I don't think I'll ever again get quite the thrill from any programme that I did from watching the first three seasons with the curly haired gent with the hat and long multi-coloured scarf at the helm in that role. My mother actually knitted me a scarf just like the one he wore! The show at that time also provided two of my earliest crushes: Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, and Louise Jameson as Leela (remember that scanty jungle dwelling tribal warrior's costume?:p).
I never watch Dr Who these days. I went off it pretty much as soon as Peter 'Bland' Davidson took over the helm. Catching bits of the latest incarnation of the show, I'm dismayed at the breakneck speed, over-the-top music, noisiness and unsubtlety. It used to be much more paced, with slow build-ups of story and atmosphere, and carefully judged shock moments-oh, and that brilliantly atmospheric incidental electronic music.
