Why are people against The X Factor?
Hey everyone,
I come on these forums often so i obviously see the x factor hate everywhere but what i dont understand is, why do people have a problem with it.
The only problems i can think of is that people dont want the winner to be xmas number 1 or possibly the show doesnt produce original artists.
My take on The X Factor is that, i really enjoy is and i suppose the 19 million odd people do aswell. I think its a great way to find talent, ok the winner is not always everyones cup of teas but it has produced fantastic artists such as Leona, Alexandra, JLS and Diana Vickers.
I cant lie and say that i wouldnt like a different xmas number 1 every year because i would but if i like who has won and like the song, im not gonna NOT buy it because it the x factor.
Not really sure if im gonna get beaten down with this thread but ive never really understood the hate so just looking for answers.
P.S i posted this in the music forum because the x factor is obviously fans of the show and the music forum specialises in the music world and has different views.

Also, this is just my taste in TV, I find it very boring.
There is also the angst of big music artists/groups who have worked their way to the very top the hard way-I think they tend to resent the instant fame thing.
Musically, well most of what comes out of XF -even the successes-tends to be mass audience middle of the road pop or whatever flavour of "pop" is around at the time. And its difficult to get away from the glorified Karaoke pantomime which XF very definitely is. If you are a trained musician/singer I would imagine its a bit hard to see acts like Jedward become millionaires virtually overnight on the basis of talents that have little to do with music but score on the massive hype that people get hooked on.
Showcasing some of the worst music/singers ever heard by mankind.
Media obsession with a totally banal TV show.
4 talentless judges who think they are the dog's bollocks.
Cowell making obscene amounts of money from Karaoke.
FFS Britain wake up and go and listen to some proper music by real musicians.
Look at whats been served up, all have been pretty wretched, just half baked Mariah Carey / Whitney Houston impersonators singing 55 notes when one will do, the blokes are just bastardised crosses of Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams & any other flavour of the month they can find.
It would be good if a proper show with better people like say Gallagher, Weller, Tennant , Bush , Gilmour , Plant etc where on giving their opinions & the contestants where given the oppurtunity to sing original material specialy penned from the guests / commisioned by the record companies. The head of EMI , Sony & Warners should be on & they should be the ones competing to give the contestants the bestest deal. It would give the show some much needed credibility & recognise talent & help to develop it , instead of a 20 week crash course on how to appeal to the tone deaf / drippy tweenies & grandmas.
It's just a reality TV show designed to attract TV viewers and phone voters, it's like a version of Big Brother where the weekly "task" the contestants have to do happens to be to sing a cover version of a well known song - so this idea that it has anything to do with uncovering musical talent is just nonsense as far as I'm concerned. At the same time, though, I don't really agree with those who say it's in any way bad for music - there would be derivative, unoriginal pop music being produced with or without the X Factor.
So yeah, I'm not sure that it's that all that many people are really "against" the X Factor, I think lots of people just don't take it seriously as a music show (but this could well be interpreted as being "against" it.)
"Keep an eye out for Wagner"
"Which one is he?"
"He's the talentless one who can't sing"
"Which one is he?"
As mindless Saturday night TV, I can stand it, even if I don't watch it. It's when it filters over to other things, billboards, magazine covers, the Christmas charts, then it becomes annoying.
Plus, I really don't like Simon Cowell.
I do admire him for one thing though, and that's he managed to invent a show that is faker than pro wrestling.
fully agree, especially the emboldend bit.
as most have already said, its way overhyped, it whips up emotion and hysteria... but as a saturday night entertainment show its watchable.... or not, theres plenty of alternatives!
txf supplies a steady stream of very samish artists who in the main dont survive very long. does it REALLY 'dominate' the charts as some people suggest? no, not really, just how many acts in the chart are from txf?... very few. many of the winners appear to be solo males... solo males forging a music career from a music show?.... well its hardly anything new.. back in the 60's tom jones, val doonican, ken dodd, engelbert humperdink, plus cilla, lulu, and others all appeared on saturday night and used it to promote themselves. engelbert and tom were two of the top selling acts in 1967, even fending off the beatles for the #1 spot.. so this style of music has always been popular, its just been packaged very successfully by cowell whom as a music producer i detest....but as a businessman i have to respect..
It would be fine if we didn't have to watch but as others in this thread have said, it is shoved down our throats, we feel sick. Take this to the showbiz forum where it belongs.
The problem with shows like this is they have created a bunch of talentless, monotone, autotuned, robots and this is what many kids these days expect. Unfortunately if you throw enough shit at them it sticks. The charts used to be full of all sorts of music from many genres, unfortunately these days its mainly styled on x-factor type garbage. The only real winner is Simon Cowell, it certainly isnt performer or the listener.
Moreso this year than ever! It's everywhere. The little kiddies outside the studio every day while the acts rehearse, on the cover of every magazine, also they have their own magazine, in the papers, on the tv, radio (I'll stop now!)
I know people say it's easy to avoid it if you really want to; but I genuinely don't think that's the case.
Also, is it just me or is it just in recent years that the judges refer to their acts as "artists" when introducing them/critiquing them; or has that always been the case?
As a tv show, it's ok; it's just everything else that goes with it.
...that is just to start with.
Absolutely agree. Even if you don't watch the show, it is hard to ignore because it pops up everywhere...all over the media. The judges never say anything constructive...it's never about how the singers can improve.
I hate the whole thing...and Britain's Got Talent is just as bad.
The vocal gymnastics absolutely grates on me...and they think it makes them so good. They aren't...none of them.
Couldn't have put it better myself.
It's got as much to do with actual musical talent as Newsnight, only not as entertaining.
Sky were on the right lines with their show Must Be The Music. At least that was based on musical talent, allowing the contestants to perform their own compositions, rather than Cowells Karaoke Competition.
It's overhyped, over most of the media, and is an insult to all those hardworking bands and musicians who works for years to get anywhere.
It's pure junk...and you can't escape from it. It is everywhere. I don't want to hear about it all. The sooner it is axed the better. Buy Surfin' Bird...the most important buy of the year. Stop Cowell getting to Number 1.
What is more worrying is that the X Factor lovvies take it so seriously. That is scary. I just hope the singers care about those who watch as much as the viewers care about them. I somehow doubt it.
Couldn't you say that about any star?
I have to say, the wrong person won this year and as such I won't be supporting, however overall I am a fan of the X Factor because of the talent that have come from the show in the past - namely Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke.
I couldn't agree more. It epitomises everything that is wrong with the music industry. There are so many fantastic artists who get bugger all recognition whilst a karaoke singer suddenly gets put up for no,1. It is TV for thickos, I don't blame kids for watching it but adults really should know better.
