The last thing I would call myself is a fan of rap music. Quite the reverse, in fact, I hate it even more than I hate disco music! However, the following track from 1968 is interesting, because I know of no earlier example of a song where the lyrics are being rapped rather than sung. It’s also quite an amusing novelty song.

So is that the first ever rap song, or does anybody know of an earlier one?
hmm... was it 'rap' before the term was created? an interesting question. thats my main gripe against the beatles being refered to as a boyband... retrospective genre alignment!

Well there's Louis Jordan of course; not rap as such, but certainly the precursor to all speaking-over-music records.
'Boyband' in it's current usage is such a nonsensical term. A 'band' indictates instruments are being played. Take That and all their sappy brethren are Male Vocal Groups. I have my own definition for them also, but that's neither important or suitable for a family forum like this.

I don't really have a problem with retrospective genre alignment. I use the term "doo-wop" to describe a particular form of vocal harmony music that was around in the fifties and I use the term "garage rock" to describe a particular type of raw, hard-edged music that was around in the sixties. Both terms, I believe, were retrospectively assigned in the seventies, but I'm cool with that.
As for the Beatles being called a boyband, I don't think it's so much a case of "retrospective genre alignment" as a case of "let's upset the older generation syndrome", something that's been popular with young people for more than half a century!
Claimed in some quarters to be the first psychedelic record. Not sure about that meself. I'd have thought Nowhere Man by The Beatles from '65 has at least as good a claim.

It seemed more apppropriate to refrain from submitting Seven O'Clock News/Silent Night until Christmas, but then I started to question whether this thread will still be around at Christmas, it's beginning to flag a bit now. Of course, I hope I'm wrong and that we'll we'll still be seeing this thread there or thereabouts at the end of the year.
I posted the above in August. It would appear that back then I had serious doubts that this thread would still be around at Christmas. Oh me of little faith! Well, I was wrong to have had those doubts and I’m really delighted to be proved wrong. Long may this excellent thread continue!
Here are two of my favourite tracks from Phil Spector’s Christmas album.
The lyrics of the next song make no reference to Christmas. However, the track does have a bit of Christmassy feel to it and it was released at the appropriate time of year, so let’s be bold and call this great track by a great band a Christmas song.
The following song is not a Christmas song, but it is a sixties Christmas Number One. In fact, it’s my all time favourite Christmas Number One by some considerable margin. It’s also my favourite version of what I consider to be one of the greatest songs ever written.
The Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Lovin’ (1964)
The Four Tops are hardly one of my favourite Motown acts. With the exception of this great track, and one or two others, I actually dislike most of what they recorded, and resent the fact that their versions of “Walk Away Renee” and “If I Were A Carpenter” were more successful in the UK than the Left Banke’s and Bobby Darin’s imho vastly superior respective versions.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, The Funk Brothers members,
only now getting their just deserts
Ureil Jones, Benny Benson, Earl Van Dyke to mention a few.
I have always prided myself on my knowledge of sixties music and when I discovered this thread I was rubbing my hands, as I thought I could make a major contribution. Think again. The problem was that when that discovery was made the thread was already months old and 99% of the of the "rare" tracks that I knew had already been posted by all those other knowledgeable people who frequent the thread, so my contribution has not been major at all, but very minor.
It would be nice if I could contribute some of my favourite sixties tracks, so I would like to ask the OP to relax the rules on New Year's Day, so that for 24 hours, midnight to midnight, the thread changes from the "Rare 60's Classics Thread" to simply the "60's Classics Thread", so myself and others can post what we consider to great sixties tracks regardless of whether they are rare or well known.
On January 2nd the thread reverts to being "Rare" again.

lol, YOU had trouble finding rare tracks that hadnt been posted, this thread soon outgrew my knowlege and im VERY pleased it did do! all credit to those of you who have kept this fascinating thread going, and without (so far) resorting to the top 20 hits we all know and love!
a fair request, i have no objections to the rules being relaxed for a day or so... (to be honest, theres not much i could do to stop anything being posted except complain!).
so a massive thanks to all who have contributed, i hope theres more mileage yet! and a happy new year to all!

Bending the rules again slightly to bring you some high-octane rockabilly. Happy new year to everyone - posters, lurkers and all good music fans alike!
Happy New Year to mushymanrob for creating and maintaining this and the 70`s thread , and a Happy New Year to all who contribute to both x x x x x[/QUO
Seconded:)
First choice for the new year are The Troggs, followed by an "interesting" version of a classic record by Nancy Sinatrra & Lee Hazelwood.
