Any suggestions on movies where the story covers a good load of years, spans past/future generations of characters...that sort of stuff?

Vacas. A Spanish film that spans, I think, 3 generations of two families in the Basque region.

Considering that Voyage of the Dawn Treader has pretty much flopped for Fox, i can't see them being in much of a hurry to make more.

As for the thread topic: Surely '2001: A Space Oddysey' is the film that spans the greatest amount of time.

You beat me to it with 2001 :)

There's also the Godfather trilogy which covers most of the 20th century.

    2001 manages 3 million years.

    How about Colonel Blimp ?

    The Magnificent Ambersons.

    An Inspector Calls.

    (one of J B Priestly's "time" plays, based on J W Dunne's occult theories, based on Bradley's philosophy .......).

    Heimat

The Star Trek films cover ......... 300 years ?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy spans a good number of years, if you include things like the prelude.

One that often crops up on telly at this time of year, How The West Was Won follows several generations of a family in the old west.

100 years of solitude was apparently adapted for film, but I've not seen it.

Not so much a film, more a series, but Roots is good for spanning generations, and well worth watching.

Armageddon starts with an asteroid wiping out the dinosaurs (65 million years ago) to the present day.
