Maybe try some Porcupine Tree. They are heavy at times, but not really that much. Very melodic, with prog elements. They have an EP out at the moment, but my favourite album by them is last year's Fear of a Blank Planet.
If you liked that album.I recommend you try out Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here. They supported Porcupine Tree on their recent tour & are label mates.Very heartfelt uplifting, yet often melancholic overtones. Some fantastic male / female harmonies.Great balance in production - Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree main man / singer / guitarist produced it ).Mostly medium paced tempo.
Actually travelled all the way up from South Wales to Wolves to see them live last Wednesday. It was well worth it.
I'd also recommend Besnard Lakes, Howlin Rain and Sunset Rubdown
Love this track by Besnard Lakes - epic.Slowish start but built up to a cresendo at about 3-40 with quite heavy Neil Youngish / Johnny Greenwood type guitar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ify-buS9JUU

+1 for Yuck, especially if you like 90s rock, e.g. Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Sonic Youth.
Also:
The Vaccines
Everything Everything
Funeral Party
Think that's the stuff she's getting tired of reading between the lines. The Vaccines - what over hyped NME derivative trash.Isn't about time bands starting coming up with something different from the usual post-punk sound. It's turning alot of people away from listening to rock music.I briefly went through a period of listening to that stuff & that was 15 years ago.It was retro, out dated & over played even then.
There's a 14-year-old called Birdy who has covered a song which I've never heard before called "Skinny Love". It's brilliant.
I also like "Burn" by the Low Anthem. I don't usually listen to that type of music. I'd describe it as blues-folk, but I don't know much about genres.
"At Home' is a good happy tune by Crystal Fighters, but I don't like their other stuff.
From the album "Kiss Each Other Clean" by Iron and Wine I like "Walking Far from Home" which is the first track and "Rabbit Will Run". Good songs for those who like songs that make you think.
I think James Blake's album can be good late night listening, but my favourite album so far this year is "Ritual" by the White Lies. The final track "Come Down" is my favourite.
If you like fun music, I recommend "Cob Dominos" by the Lovely Eggs.
From last year - if you're feeling a bit down and need cheering up, check out "Light of Love" or "Just Me" by Music go Music.

Maybe. I wasn't paying much attention to the original post since it's nearly 3 years old.
For stuff a bit more left of centre there's always the F**k Buttons, A Place To Bury Strangers, If These Trees Could Talk, Thoughtforms, iLikeTrains

i wonder how many of the posters here are being paid to peddle their opinions?
And, from that list, I like Blitzen Trapper, Smoke Fairies (although I haven't heard much, yet), Deer Tick, Micah P Hinson and some Midlake.
Skinny Love might be the Bon Iver song:

Ahh, I haven't heard her version, but I'm assuming the song is a Bon Iver cover?
