I think River is a more 'interesting' character then Amy, but mainly as we still don't know her story. I really like Amy as well though, one of my favourite ever companions
I think they serve very different roles. Much like Jack, River wouldn't work as a companion in the long term because she knows too much and is too close to being on an equal footing with The Doctor.
Fear not, I should think there are plenty of people who aren't really that interested in Amy. There was a long thread for people who felt so last year. For myself I'd put it that I'm more intrigued by River than Amy. Which is what we're supposed to be this series. Now, I like Amy and I also like River but I see codename_47 has already done the mandatory Harry Hill thing.
The last time they had a companion with some equal footing-ness it worked very well. Mel. No! I meant Nyssa. Of course not - Romana (splendid chap both of them). But Jack and River are also very different from that sort of character and maybe wouldn't work so well as a "normal" companion (maybe we'll see her join-the-tardis series one year - perhaps could be an audio thing in 5 or 10 years time).
My intrigue in River doesn't diminish my like for Amy.
I like them both, River is more interesting as she has the whole "who is she?" mystery about her. I think they both are great characters, Amy is my second favourite companion after Donna.
Slightly off topic - I was thinking about these 2 the other day. At the end of 'Flesh and Stone', River asks the Doctor if the Pandorica has happened yet, implying it has already happened for her. However, didn't she act as if she was meeting Amy for the first time at the beginning of the that story? And also, when Amy and the Doctor met up with River at the beginning of the Pandorica Opens, doesn't she act like she knows Amy?
Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this, just going from memory rather than actually going back and checking on it...
Where River Song is concerned, I think she deliberately tries to avoid other companions. She didn't recognise Donna until quite a fair way in, and I think to avoid the whole issue of timelines, she just goes with whatever pretty face the Doctor seems to have by his side.

In my memory, it was Amy that doesn't recognise River in Flesh and Stone but River knows who she is. I don't think she's all Sup Amy hows it going because amy doesnt' know her so..
Pandorica Opens is her first meeting with Amy.
I like them both. The whole mystery behind River is certainly one of her main points, but even without it she's a very good sparring partner for the Doctor. Amy is as well but then she (along with Rory) fill the role of our gateway into this world. Personally I think Rory is my favourite out of all three. Looking forward to the first two eps as we will hopefully get a bit with all of them, Amy and River work well together. I just hope re-watching River isn't spoiled by the reveal.
I expect River, as a seasoned Doctor-spotter, would know not to give anything away about a companion who may or may not know who she is until after she knows where she is in the Doctor's timeline. Given that the Doctor introduced Amy, she would know that this is Amy's first meeting.
And while I agree that River has the more interesting backstory (now that Amy's has been explained), and is a cool action hero type, I still think Amy is the more interesting character.
i love all 4 of them!! they play off of each other superbly as actors and as characters!
It is the best lineup the show has evr had IMO!
River is a cool action heroine type and just so mysterious! and cannot wait to see ehr again. and i love Amy too! she really grew across one series and is really entertaining too and my fave companion overall on the show i must say!
and of course Rory is just fantastic isn't he?
and i have praised Matt a lot! but he truly is MY doctor i must say! just fantastic
River bores me absolutely silly, her character was perfect for a one-off story that added to the mystery and intrigue of The Doctor as a character but, since then, there's been far too much focus on her (including turning her into a bit of a pantomime action heroine, a female Captain Jack). And she's just not that interesting IMO.
Love all of them. I love having a couple tag along with the Doctor. So much better than the whole "will she fall in love with him" stuff that got old for me (as a New Who viewer) after Rose.
But yeah, I suppose once we know who River is, she won't be as intriguing. But I do love Alex Kingston and think River Song is a great character.

So Amy wins by default.
Agree with you about River but I'm not sold on Amy either. More Rory please. just to give someone else screen time!

I agree with you for the most part. I think that Amy works so well because it's this particular doctor. His quirkiness brings out the richness of her oddities. She wouldn't have "fit" as well with other incarnations.
I'd like to see just River and Rory travel with the Doctor for a while. Maybe someone could nudge Amy into the crack and out of existence, it would save Rory pining for her.
I take it I am not the only one who is much more interested in the character of River rathen than Amy
Your not alone, lol.
And bigheather, I too would love for Rory to become the main companion. I mean, Amy isn't that bad. I just don't care for her all that much. Though I guess alot could change in the next few months or so
I wouldn't like Rory to become the main companion, I do like him (though I didn't at first) but I think he needs Amy, and Amy needs Rory to some extent. Amy works without him, but works better with him, whereas Rory works with her but not without her imo.

And Amy pining for the Doctor, which is pretty much the exact same thing as we've had in our female companions (except Donna) but apparently its ok if Moffat does it....:p

I must admit I've never seen Amy pining for the Doctor - being shouty, sometimes a pain in the rear and jumping on him once, yes, but never pining

It probably helps that Alex Kingston acts the short skirts off Karen Gillan.

This (:
I'm interested in River, but as soon as I know who she is not gonna be on my radar..

I do tend to think of Amy and Rory as the Teegan and K9 of series 5, and River is very much a mix of Jack and Romana 1.
Ooooh, the best theory I've heard all week
