Do you condition your hair? I used to scoff at conditioners but it actually is nicer :o

i also use a pink Bedhead spray with a... green? lid, that adds shine.

I always condition my hair after shampooing. But it still seems so dry. Where can I get the spray that you advised from??

I get mine from my hairdresser, and there's also a market stall that does it. I think most places that sell specialist hair stuff will do it. It's Tigi, the brand, I think.

That's it. I've been using it for at least eight years now... It makes my hair feel light, floaty and shiny. Maybe not less dry, but it LOOKS less dry.

Also, what shampoo and conditioner do you use?

You need to have a think about the cause to help remedy the problem. Do you regularly straighten, colour or both? These things will almost certainly dry the hair out if the hair isn't adequately being maintained.

Do you use a clarifying shampoo? If so when was the last time you used it? You may be suffering from build up so clarify the hair if so. Is your regular shampoo too harsh? You might want to think about using an SLS free shampoo, Liz Earle does a good one.

Use a deep conditioner twice a week for about 30 minutes, or once a week if that's too much. The quick, instant conditioners are not the best thing to use, you need something moisture rich. Good brands are, Kerastase, Goldwell, Joico, Paul Mitchell etc, as Jenny has said Ojon is good too. If you do this for a few weeks it should quickly get your hair back into shape.

Some people condition the hair overnight and rinse in the morning, which will quickly add moisture back into the hair.

Think about using a leave in conditioner also for added benefit.

I recommend Loreal Absolute Repair. You can find it on ebay (new) for less than it is in the shops. Leave the conditioner in for at least a couple of hours.

I sometimes leave the conditioner on all day (some people do it overnight), and Inecto Coconut oil can be used in the same way. The latter is very effective at remoisturizing your hair.

If you use any 'Aussie' stuff - quit - that dried my hair like nothing else.

Thank you everyone! I straighten my hair a lot so that is probably what is causing it to be so dry and lifeless!

I use coconut shampoo and conditioner but I have changed it so much over the years becuase nothing has ever seemed to work! :(

I can't afford to go to the hairdressers so I'll try some of the products that you have all mentioned!

    Thank you all once again.

It's all very much appreciated! :)

I would recommend Kerastase mask for hair.

It is a thick and very intensive treatment. Expensive but brilliant

Yes this is the root cause. If you are straightening that often, bog standard shampoo and conditioner won't do, you need something heavyweight. Do you use heat protectant - that's a must if you a straightening often. Kerastase Ciment is excellent, Tresemme is another cheaper alternative.

I use the Tresemme heat defence spray thingy. They are on special offer in Asda - two for £5. I've straightened my hair for years and they work well for me.

Years ago when I was a wee girl, my mum and Nana used to wash their hair and dowse it in olive oil, wrap their heads in clingfilm or pop a shower cap on and then a towel. They would leave it on for 20 or so minutes then rinse it out. This was when they both dyed and permed their hair so it could have the texture of wire wool.

Would that help my hair to look or feel less dry Pixie?

I occasionally use Extra Virgin Olive Oil as a pre shampoo treatment. Just apply about a handful into your palm and distribute it through the hair. Let it sit for about an hour then wash it out. This is very good for dryness.

You could probably use a good hair conditioner and also apply moisturizer prior to combing or hairdressing.

i have extremely thick, dry, coarse hair naturally. i've tried everything to make it resemble "normal" hair but nothing worked properly. i then started reading about Moroccan oil in beauty forums and beauty blogs and decided to try it as i was pretty desperate.

    i got this one: http://www.hqhair.com/moroccanoil-original-oil-treatment-100ml/10387664.html

which seems pretty expensive, but i wasn't too bothered since i have probably spent hundreds over the years on different products that didn't work. you can buy cheaper brands of Moroccan oil as well i think if you scour the internet. my hair is amazing now and has been from the first time i used it. i don't even recognise my hair, it's literally like somebody elses.

edit: you use this after you have washed your hair, when it's damp. i also apply it when my hair is dry, mostly on the ends which tended to get reeeeally dry/brittle. it doesn't leave hair greasy and it smells pretty pleasant - i had previously tried washing my hair with olive oil but it is a nightmare trying to get it all out and didn't smell great, i'd end up with tonnes of residue and start blow drying my hair and realise it wasn't all out/my hair was awful and greasy. and now i use moroccan oil i don't need to use ANYTHING else (well besides normal shampoo/conditioner). before my routine was crazy, i'd use expensive anti frizz moisturising shampoo, triple strength moisturising conditioning mask, serums you put in when damp, blow drying spray, hair straightener heat defence spray and then follow with ~frizz serums when my hair was dry. now i just use this one thing.
