Wedding Discos: Compulsory Songs

At a family wedding on Saturday. The disco begins..... and is there a law or a United Nations resolution that says they always have to play:

I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston
Night Fever - Bee Gees
We Are Family - Sister Sledge
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham!
5 6 7 8 - Steps (ffs!!)
Rock DJ - Robbie Williams (sorry - in naff local DJ language MISTER Robbie Williams)

I mean, there are a couple of decent songs there but it's soooooo predictable!

But - shock! horror! - we didn't get 'Come On Eileen', so I'm guessing the DJ in question has been sent away for remedial training.

Dancing Queen by Abba. I vaguely remember liking this song at one point, but it's played so often - especially at discos - that I don't enjoy listening to it anymore.

You must finish with 'New York, New York'. That is rule number 1.

    Oops upside Your Head
    Pricetag (for the young 'uns)
    Thriller

There will also be a 'rock' section with Bon Jovi & Status Quo (laughably the heaviest thing you'll hear at a wedding)

I find the more you drink the more your tolerance level drops therefore you end up doing the conga at the end.

Last time I wa a wedding was 2008 and they had a ban playing. Don't remember any of the songs but the band was awful. Must be an unwritten rule of weddings.

I've been to weddings and other events where the people asked the DJ to play different sorts of music when they booked him, the DJ has agreed and then turned up and played the same sort of crap as described above. On a couple of occasions (they may have complained in the others but I don't know about it), the DJ was taken to task about it and he said that he knew best what got people dancing.

Generally, the DJ does know best. It sounds a bit arrogant but it's true and is proven by the amount of times I've been told "Play xxx, it will get everyone dancing" only to play it for him and his wife, who then sit down halfway through.

The worst crowds are when there's a large age range. Whatever you play isn't right. Play Black Eyed Peas and the older crowd want some Abba, play anything older and the young 'uns want chart stuff. You can't win!

You've opened up a big can of worms here you know...:D

Just to keep on topic, the first song I play after buffet/ speeches/ cake/ first dance etc is 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now'.

I understand what you're saying but one of these occasions was a golden wedding and the couple wanted some wartime tunes and there were none. Personally, I think the DJ didn't have any and didn't want to say so or get any (this was before downloads) and thought he'd deal with the flak at the time. The other time that I can recall, the couple wanted soul music (inc Northern Soul, not just the usual) because they were devotees and got standard fare.

Ah, if it's specialist to that extent then fair enough. I've been asked in the past to do a disco with a 'Motown' emphasis and I must say that rushing around CD shops at the 11th hour isn't as much fun as it sounds!

I went to a friend's wedding recently, she didn't have a DJ, she chose all her own songs, enough to last 5 hours. My OH wasn't impressed, he knew it would be cheese all evening....I didn't mind some of the time. :D Though I must admit, her obsession with Take That, did wear a bit thin, it ended up with her, on her own, dancing away singing all the words, not caring at all no-one else was dancing. Bless. :D

    Yup.

As for the DJ knowing best.......hmmmmm. DJ knowing the lowest common denominator, more like!!

For my 40th birthday party, my other half booked a DJ, and knowing how fussy I am, didn't tell him exactly what to play, but gave strict instructiona about which artists & genres NOT to play under any circumstances. :D

I've heard some howlers at weddings including one couple having their first dance to "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge :/

The number of people who think Band of Gold or Every Breath You Take is appropriate too... Listen to the lyrics people!!!

I know someone who wanted 'I'd Rather Go Blind' - first line 'something told me it was over'.

    Footloose
    Macarena
    Saturday Night
    Oops Upside Your Head
    Grease medley
    Dirty Dancing medley

These are all regulars at wedding/birthday discos! And I wouldn't have it any other way :D

I got married last year and gave the dj a complete playlist, i said as nicely as possible that it was my/our wedding and i was paying him to entertain and this is what i want.
He got a bit humpy as though i was trying to tell him his job and that maybe he couldn't "read the crowd".
But i insisted or i'd look elsewhere and he agreed.
I stated there should be NO music that involved a "dance" eg Saturday Night, NO motown/60's, NO popular metal eg Bon Jovi.

    It worked a treat!!!

We had a brilliant ABBA tribute act and the feedback from guests, the venue staff and the dj was that they'd enjoyed it like no other wedding.

I wish i could re-live it all over again :D:D

A few 'compulsories' guaranteed to get me off the floor and back to my seat:

Grease Megamix - I have never and will never 'do' this in my life. Always guaranteed to break the stride of a good bop.
Thank ABBA For The Music - play the originals or don't bother
    Daydream Believer
    Mustang Sally
    Hi Ho Silver Lining
Brown-Eyed Girl - the perenniality of this is especially WTF to me, as it was never even a chart hit in the UK.

It's not just weddings OP. There used to be a bar in our town whose 'playlist' consisted practically solely of these and the aforementioned roster of tracks. I think there's just a few generic DJ CDs in circulation which are used for these types of dives, in addition to all general occasions (eg wedding reception/anniversary/office Christmas do's etc etc).
