Following the minute's applause for Gary Speed, Derm announced that they were having power issues and warned the studio that the commentary could fall off air at any moment. In fact it was about 25 minutes later when the battery in the COOBE gave up. Impressively Derm and Gaz got the battery changed and dialled into the studio in the time it took to play a jingle and the BBC Trust consultation trail.
Good work there- the battery cover on those COOBEs can be a tad tricky. Shows the vital importance of having at least one set of spare cells.
I suspect it was Derm more than Wayne though
First time I ever tech-oped a sports programme the line failed shortly after the game. After a few moments silence the listening audience got 'Let It Be'. Why? Because it was one track I knew was in the music library, was fairly long and could easily be found and played! It was far longer than required (I was very new remember!) but it was decided to play the whole song- gave us a good opportunity to discuss what the rest of the programme would consist of
Important lesson: always have a couple of trails and a couple of tracks handy- there were other times when lines failed and a trail wasn't quite enough to fill the gap.

Alastair Bruce-Ball was at Wolves vs Sunderland with Michael Gray and David Oates.
Must have been a late switch as Phil Wye had tweeted that Ian Brown would be with David Oates at Wolves.
It appears there has been another late switch on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra going by the above Twitter account.
Mike Sewell will commentate on Hull City v Birmingham City for 5LSE tonight alongside Billy Davies, with no Ian Brown once again.
We might not be hearing Sewell covering as many football games come the new year - commentator David Croft, summariser Anthony Davidson and pitlane reporter Natalie Pinkham have been officially announced as members of Sky's Formula 1 team for 2012 today, meaning Radio 5 Live will need to recruit a new team for next season and I would have thought Sewell would be well suited to either the first and last role.

Hopefully talkSPORT will provide commentaries on Europa League games in the New Year too, as they did last year when Liverpool dropped into the competition in the second half of the 2009/10 season.
I've always thought live Europa League commentaries would be a good fit for talkSPORT, particularly the 6pm kick-offs that take place when potential listeners may still be on their daily commute and, due to their current affairs remit, 5 Live may not be able to cover (and indeed rarely do). With both of the Manchester clubs in the competition come February it's surely a no-brainer for the station, although like you I expect 5 Live to do as many commentaries on City and United as possible.

I wonder if a Champions League radio broadcast contract would just carry over for it? Not sure how it works.
I wonder if a Champions League radio broadcast contract would just carry over for it? Not sure how it works.
That seemed to be the case in 2009/10. talkSPORT had struck a deal with Liverpool to cover their European games in the autumn and provided commentaries on all bar one (a final dead rubber) of their Champions League group games. There was some speculation on here at the time as to whether talkSPORT's deal would extend to the Europa League, it seems as if it did as they did commentaries on all of Liverpool's EL games in the second half of that season.
This doesn't apply this season as talkSPORT haven't struck a deal to cover the whole of 2/3 English club's European campaigns, as they had done in every season since 2004/05. Instead their policy has been to do commentaries on every away game involving the English teams and none of their home matches. So following through a contract wouldn't apply to them, nor Radio 5 Live who always seem to pick up Champions League commentaries on a game-by-game basis. Not sure what the situation is with Manchester City and BBC Manchester, although I suspect the whole of City's Europa League campaign will be covered live on that station.
Charles Sale, in the Daily Mail, reports that "despite the BBC snubbing the FA’s England and FA Cup TV tender, 5 Live are expected to renew their contract."
To save anyone from clicking on the link with the intention of reading more about The FA radio deal, the above quote is literally all the article says about it. There is no mention of the timescale of the negotiations, the exclusivity of the current deal or potential rival bids.
I'd say Sale is stating the obvious here - Radio 5 Live will almost certainly bid for and renew at least a share of these rights, the much more interesting thing will be to see if they retain a) the full package of rights they possess at the moment and b) national radio exclusivity.
Given that the same column yesterday described The FA as being "cash-hungry" when it comes to their TV deal, I'd be willing to bet that they'd be keen to sell non-exclusive rights to both the BBC and talkSPORT if they could make more money that way than by selling exclusive rights to the Beeb (who understandably won't be in a position to pay as much for the rights as they have done in past years), in which case the ball would be in UTV Radio's court as to whether they believe they can make this set of non-exclusive rights work for their station.
