Final fantasy VI springs to mind, after final fantasy VII cemented its place in history as one the greatest games ever made there where that group of people that almost every game has that needed to disagree just to disagree so they started to say that VI was the best
As allways in these threads people namedrop all the most enjoyed franchises and trolololol
True, but to be over rated, the game has to by definition be rated. It sort of has to be a pretty popular game. No point saying Space Station Silicon Valley on the n64 because about 5 people played it.
GTA the series. Just bores me
Final Fantasy XIII - Reviewers were buying into the hype. Some at least changed there story
Mass Effect - I just could not get into the game
FIFA 12 - See Fifa 12 thread for momentum debate.
LoZ: Skyward Sword - Was good but not worthy of 10/10 by most review sites.
LoZ: Ocarina of Time - Good when it was released back in '98 - too over rated now.
L.A. Noire - Realistic faces don't neccessarily make a good game as it was VERY repetitive and boring.
Uncharted 3 - Very dumbed down, and it lacked what made Uncharted 2 so good. Lack of Elena and Chloe didn't help.
Funnily enough, all games made by Id. The problem is, that all these games are technology led. Fifteen years ago, this was a big deal and novel tech was enough to make an exciting game.
The problem is, the games industry is now full of people who are as good as or better than Carmac. And he hasn't realised this yet. He spent so long on the tech for these games, that the gameplay was just an after thought. And in the case of D3 and Rage, Carmac had been beaten to the punch on tech.
I had to laugh when reading some of the post-mortem stuff on the original Quake from Abrash. There was this massive deal made about surface-caching and the six-cycle perspective texture mapping. Unfortunately, the demo scene had gotten there way ahead of them, using older hardware.
I don't even think bioware rated Dragon Age 2 that highly.
The fact that within a fortnight of release they were throwing in Mass Effect 2 for free underlines that.
Their forum around that time was hilarious and far more entertaining than the game, even their legendary fanboys vanished along with the mods who had long given up trying to remove all the posts poking fun at Bioware, EA and development team.

Dead space 2 picked up for less than £10 is probably my last one, everything else over rated.
LA Noire is probably the most over rated though in nearly 25 years of playing games. Just shocking how it got the excellent reviews.
Tedious and boring, has new facial technology? So what. Its Gta without the fun.
Halo
Quake 4
Rage
