Donating to Animal Charities

Does anyone on here donate to any animal charities? I'm looking at donating to a couple but there are so many to choose from. I was thinking of the RSPCA and perhaps Animalsasia.org. but I'm really not sure. I'd like to help the usual cats and dogs etc. in the UK and then something that helps bears, orangutans, donkeys, etc. abroad. I've heard good and bad things about PETA so I'm not sure about them.
Any ideas?

I personally donate to the cat protection league and a local donkey sanctury.
As has already been said, sponsoring a local animal shelter is probably the best idea and they would really benefit from your donation.
I have mixed feelings about Peta, I cannot fault their passion for animals and back most of their campaigns but I feel that sometimes they go the wrong way about things...
Why not look at charities that are helping with species that are going extinct for a more global contribution?
^ 100% agree with this.
I've donated to the WSPA campaign against bear bating in India and the Blue Cross.
These are the two charitites I've decided on. WSPA was actually mentioned in an article I read yesterday that made me decide to want to donate to a couple of animal charities. I have rung the RSPCA a couple of times and they've not been too concerned about coming out to check up on something which is why I think the Blue Cross would be a better choice of one to support.
Cheers for your suggestions everyone.
The PDSA are a very worthwhile charity, an awful lot of pets would get no vet care or would end up in rescue centres if it wasn't for them.
I donate to Compassion in World Farming, they campaign for legislation changes to improve the welfare of farm animals.
Same here. Local wildlife or animal rescue charities do such hard work and need all the support they can get. I'd much rather give to them than RSPCA. In terms of bigger charities I support my local Wildlife Trust and RSPB both do important work in supporting our wildlife, nature and protecting our little remaining green spaces, also they do support worthwhile projects abroad. Also the PDSA are fantastic with domesticated animals and wildlife so I support them.
I dont trust RSPCA with wildlife - often they wont help and they dont rehabilitate wildlife, its easier for them to put them down. I would encourage everybody to keep the number of your local wildlife rescue centre incase you ever need them, RSPCA can be useless -here's a list.

Even if they arent near enough they will tell you where to go to get help...often PDSA will be the best alternative.
This is a list of small local animal sancturies and rescue centres around the country, some are specialist such as caring for horses or dogs, some care for all animals, some wildlife, I always have a look and try and support a couple of local charities from there.

my son saw the advert for it and was so distressed by hearing about abandoned dogs that the only way to calm him down was to sponsor one
he loves getting the cards and letters from 'Jason' the dog he chose to sponsor
