Biffpup found this nifty poster, put up on telephone poles in Port Isaac (Wenn), informing the village when DM filming was going to occur for the 2009 shooting season.
Hard fought battle of James Henry's first word. I personally think they will just continue on the next minute from where series 5 finished and...have a bit fight!
Do you think it is the aging thing between series that will stop MC doing a series 7?
Series 7...
IMO I think MC is being realistic about how long this show can keep going at its peak. He does not want it to turn into a soap opera with the regular characters walking on set and doing what they always do...ad infinitum.
Personally, as much as l love it and would miss it, I believe that is a real danger. Series 5 was the ideal ' wrapper-upper ' and should have been the final - whatever can follow that ending with the helicopter-shot closing sequences ?
Letting go is the hardest part of loving something/someone...we have to be brave.
I would trust The Doc with my life, wouldn't you ?

So we must trust MC's judgement now
I wonder if they will announce before filming that it will be the last series. I hope they don't. Otherwise it will be a morbid love fest of having to get to see it. R.E.M. knew for almost 2 years that they were going to break up and intentionally didn't announce it before what turned out to be their final tour. I thought that was a classy way to go out, and I hope DM does the same thing. Although they actually might want the attention that it will draw to the show, but REM wanted to avoid that type of final goodbye attention.
Once it is over, I think that my attention to him and of course to Doc Martin will wane quickly. Part of the draw for me is wondering what things mean and how they might play out in the next series. I am sure he will consider those things when he ends the show. It could be that after this series plays in the US, and knowing there will be another, it could catapult his career once producers here understand how popular he is with a certain segment of the population. It will be interesting to see what kind of attention the show gets once series 5 starts airing here this spring.
MC must be caving in, as he said the reason why they bought horses was to curb Emily's interest in boys for as long as possible!! At least he is a good Dad taking her to the concert...
Hope you're all well and dealing with your docmartinitis in anyway that works.
So fan campaign part one almost finished. Obviously now that season 6 is becoming a reality - there is no point in activating part 2 of the campaign. We'll keep that for season 7 eh. Part one has now transformed into a nice little video about fans around the world. It has been extremely amusing and I can't wait for you all to see it!
Quick question: if Doc Martin Online was to hold a weekly rewatch project, with us nominating one day a week - say Mondays, to start watching the show from the very start all the way through. That way we could make the weekly poll relate to the particular episode - and everyone could come back here to the DS forum to dissect the episode afresh. I figured because we've all come along to the show at different times it might be fun to rewatch it all together.
We could start it when the USA fans have finished season 4. And that way I can make sure that the recap for the site is completed every week also. And it gives me a more believable timeline to work to.
So what say?

And, if we play our cards right, this can keep us fruitfully occupied until shooting for S6 starts and the rampant speculation as to plot development begins....

Maybe it is easier for me because I am, first & foremost, an admirer of MC's work in every genre.
Whilst I love The Doc, I am also looking forward with anticipation to whatever other challenges in new roles he will seek.
And, finally, to me, he is not soap-opera/celebrity material; he is too talented and has spent too many years perfecting his craft just to be eye-candy.

Really. You think the people on this forum and endlessly discuss every episode from multiple viewings for months on end. Second thought, it sounds perfect.
Biff, Pauline's character can be just as hard to figure out as LG at times.
She values helping out DM with blood draws and takes pride in her running a smooth office. She basically likes him and I believe is sincere when she says she'll miss him when he is leaving in S4 finale. Yet, she is not below disparaging him, making fun of him, or humiliating him.
In that phone call she seems to feel she knows the Doc well, and how he works, but we see her not be accurate in that regard more than once. We see her think she can get away with "blackmailing" him when he is leaving, after he gave her the "competent" reference, only instead he out and out fires her, which takes her very much by surprise.
We saw in the wedding episode that she is kind him in person the day of the affair, and then as soon as she is with LG she is dissing him right and left, as "jokes". Only, they aren't funny to the audience and neither to LG, either. It's very duplicitous and we see this unbecoming character trait of her.
We see her making fairly regular fun of his blood phobia, in a factual way, but nonetheless in a teasing way, too. "Are you going to hide in a corner like a little girl?" she asks him as he is preparing to take the job in London.
Mind you, DM has put up with a LOT from Pauline, including her wisecracks, and her gambling problem and resulting insolence. He also gave her a real boost of self-esteem and self-worth by having her certified in blood draws.
Right away in the morning in S3 Finale, the Post Master is telling Pauline about DM's "pajama party" with LG, (only he didn't have pajamas there so he slept either nekkid or in his boxers, but that is tangential to this discussion). Later, in that phone call, she is saying she knows him and what he'd do, but she doesn't. No one does! Not even LG, not AJ, and really, not even DM himself. She feels that because she spends the most time with him she has him figured out, which is patently untrue. He is much more complicated inside than she knows! So, she is once again making assumptions about him that are not accurate and I imagine she is talking to Al.
On the funny side:
1. A funny side of Pauline "betraying" him is when she finds him unconscious on the floor of the kitchen and she photographs him and sends it to Al Large, only that time, it IS funny to the audience.
2. Another funny side of Pauline making fun of him is joking that she knows he is in love with her, when he is leaving, which he obviously buys into).
Thanks for the input, Mona. You make a good point about Pauline thinking she knows the Doc better than she really does. It reminds me of her attempting to treat the baker's injured hand in "On the Edge". When DM comes in he barks at her something about just because she sits in the same office as a doctor, it doesn't make her a doctor.
I think Pauline & DM had a funny relationship, funny in more ways than one. I think they truly grew to become fond of each other, but she loved to tease him, and he never "got" it, he described her abilities as just adequate, but sent her for the bloodwork course, she told Al (or whoever) on that phone call that "He wouldn't do it, I know him," and, assuming this was about the engagement, we see how wrong she was, he often tried to get her to keep her personal life out of the office, but he strongly defended her against her own mother when Mom acted like an idiot about the gambling addiction. And when the fellows came to repossess her scooter, he took on an almost fatherly role toward both Pauline and Al, who were causing an emotional scene. It's all more complex than we see at first glance.
I like your two "funny side" items, Mona. Those were truly hilarious. That moment when she stands on the chair to take his photo with the dog is priceless!
Pauline was a truly likeable, if immature and gossipy, character and her relationship with the Doc was always interesting. I miss her. And I hope I don't offend anyone here, but she was a vast improvement over Elaine, who drove me batty.
Can anyone tell me how far in advance Buffalo Pictures announced that they were going to do a Series 5? Months...a year.?? As I only just discovered DM last June I am in the dark....thanks..
Due to eons of being an Avengers fan, I guess I just can't help but always be on the lookout for sexual innuendo and double-entendre. Mona understands, right, Mona?
I think I may have found one in Doc Martin. In the episode Midwife Crisis, LG is in the chemist's shop with the antibiotic prescription. The midwife says something about DM not being her doctor. LG responds, "I was pressed for time and he is very good..." (brief pause), "...as a doctor. I mean he knows a lot."

I have very mixed feelings about this, I must say. The season-ending shots of S5 felt like a very appropriate finale; almost like anything else would be anti-climactic, unless there is really exceptional writing and plotting. So I do think that S6 risks "jumping the shark" and I think MC is keenly aware of that.
(I also think he said somewhere that S6 would be the last -- am I imagining this and/or do we think there are any circumstances in which BP would change its stance about this?)
While I would watch Martin Clunes is most anything he does, I do think DM is his most compelling character so far.
I could imagine S6 being kind of a valedictory season, with favorite characters brought back for an episode or two (Pauline, Roger); DM and LG growing comfortable and confident in their relationship, the wedding and occupation questions resolving, and a return to the somewhat more vulnerable and human DM of S1 and S2.
But I think there are real risks involved in a S6, and while I'm all for it, it will be truly remarkable, and almost unique if it isn't a little "flat" in comparsion to previous seasons.

Doctor Rabies, I think that's a great idea! Maybe we could give everyone a few days to watch the designated episode so if some are too busy on a certain day, we'd have time to watch it. Then you could designate a day for the discussion of the ep to start. I like it. Let us know.

I'm a newbie too so I don't know about series 5. I do know that they just recently announced that there will be a series 6, and it will be filmed in the summer of 2013.

My roommate actually stopped watch half way throus S1 because he couldn't stand Elaine and found her character too over the top. I finally got him to give S2 a shot and he found Pauline "better"...and watch all the way through S5.
Due to eons of being an Avengers fan, I guess I just can't help but always be on the lookout for sexual innuendo and double-entendre. Mona understands, right, Mona?

Did I catch one there or is it my imagination?
Although I appreciate your focus on that topic, I'm not sure that found a real sexual innuendo here. I think we have two options for interpretation of that line:
1. While suffering a UTI, LG tells a just met midwife at the chemists that her estranged and brief lover was good in bed, and is also a good doctor. (Mind you, that would be before the 103 fever which is to happen a few days later. Also, she got the UTI without having had recent sex with DM; in fact, they last had sex 7 or so months ago. And, overall, LG is very shy about stating that sort of thing to anyone.)
OR...
2. LG says he is very good, and then catches herself, wanting to be in denial--that is not wanting to care that she is not with him as she carries his baby. She wants to blank out he is indeed a very good man (though endlessly problematic), and that it would be so good if they were together again, and to break away from those intense emotions, she has to qualify her comment as referencing his professionalism. She can always retreat into just factually stating his medical competency.
I think Option 2 makes the most sense. What do you think Barfpup?

I so agree NewPark
There is a time to say ' Goodbye '
How many series do you see aired long past their sell-by date ?
That is so very sad and I don't want to see that happen to the DM series ( and for it to fall in the ratings )
' Do not think of what you have LOST; but of what you HAD '
Brave words from one eagerly awaiting her Series Five DVD on pre-order from Amazon...
But I DO know when it is time to let go...and keep watching my DVDs....

I totally agree Elaine drive me batty too. Just goes to show Dominic Minghella wasn't perfect!:D:D:D
Like others, I am all for a S6. However I think S6 is going to have to be the best series out of all of them. I believe they can't afford for S6 to be a fizzer or else that is what DM will be remembered for in years to come IMO. We won't of course but your average viewer probably will.
This series has to rock & I have my fingers crossed that the writers can produce the goods.
If we see in Ep1 that DM & LG are back to square one again - no affection & not really being a couple. I think I'll be turning off. Not that their relationship is all about the show but it has to move forward from S5 Ep8.
I'll put money on it - there will be either a wedding or BE #2 on the way......
I can definitely see why BP agreed to a S6. Look at the ratings results of S5...they would have been made not too.

I don't have to worry about saying goodbye because the show isn't leaving, it is coming back in 2013. Maybe it is time for you to let go but I don't need to because they are not yet walking away. I like the show and I want them to stay as long as they want to stay. In the meantime I am not going to encourage them to move on because they might feel that I don't want them around anymore and that is not how I feel. They are super smart people who are super wealthy as a result of being smart and talented and I think they will make the right decision for themselves when the time comes. Their show has enriched my life and I want them to stay around as long as they want to.
I realize that the show will end at some point, but I am not going to become Debbie Downer in preparation for this eventuality. When I adopted my dog, my neighbor told me that her dog had just passed away. She said "It's too bad they have to die." Yes, it is too bad, I agreed. It bummed me out for a moment because course she is right. But I am not constantly preparing myself for my dog's demise. I am enjoying her while she is with me.

Dcdmfan,
You have stated my feelings on the subject perfectly, thank you
I love the show, can't wait to see what they have in store for us and have every confidence in the writers ability to produce a brilliant series 6.
In the meantime I will indulge in my enjoyment of the show by discussing the other series ad infinitum until they draw the final curtain whenever that may be.

They have always managed to surprise and hook us with character development and plot twists. I can't imagine that S6 will be an exception. And a lot to look forward to in the meantime -- S5 DVD released, implementation of Doctor Rabies plan, etc.
Doctor Rabies, I hope your suggestion means that you will be able from time to time to share some of your filming and directing insights with us?
I hate to keep belaboring the point but has it been FORMALLY announced that there will be a Series 6? I figured I would have read the press release on this website. Clue me in here..please...:)

Right, and, as you know, here in the US we're still waiting for series 5 to become available on DVD (or Hulu or Netflix or whatever), so we've got a long, long wait for series 6. Probably late 2014, I bet. Wonder if I'll survive. I only discovered Doc Martin a couple of months ago and have watched and rewatched the first 4 seasons so much already that I know exactly what's about to happen and be said. I think I need treatment...from the Doc!!!

Right, and, as you know, here in the US we're still waiting for series 5 to become available on DVD (or Hulu or Netflix or whatever), so we've got a long, long wait for series 6. Probably late 2014, I bet. Wonder if I'll survive. I only discovered Doc Martin a couple of months ago and have watched and rewatched the first 4 seasons so much already that I know exactly what's about to happen and be said. I think I need treatment...from the Doc!!!
