Even the father seemed to be harbouring some sort of naive mental issue. The whole programme was made in an unnecessarily seedy way, taking advantage of what is quite clearly a family with deep issues.

The fact they were hanging around after the court case, almost excited to be speaking to the press, grinning and acting odd was really weird. The whole thing was uncomfortable viewing and C4 need to take a long hard look at themselves.

I fell asleep 15 from the end.
Could it all be a silly game for 15 minutes of fame? nobody could be as dim as this shower could they?.

I am more shocked at how the girl got into university, I know they have dumbed down but surely not that much.

Like so many others have said I found the whole thing very weird indeed, especially continually showing the photographs and flashing her name on screen.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to hear that after the restraining order has been lifted she is back in contact with him again.

I found the whole thing completely daft and very weird. I said to my OH at the beginning, "This girl doesn't seem the full shilling". It was bleeding obvious it was the BF. He was the only one with the pics. The fact that she went on pose for more naughty pics and even go as far as make porn vids, thinking they wouldn't get out, isn't just naive, it's plain stupid.

I did have some sympathy for her though, as she obviously has some issues. When she explained some OCD tendencies she had, such as needing to flick the light switches 8-13 times, I really felt for her. Her BF was obviously very controlling, especially saying things like "You don't really love me or trust me if you won't do more pictures" - she was obviously completely fell for him and would do anything to please him. I couldn't help but feel she still cared for him by keeping the presents and cards he'd bought her, and only deleting him off Facebook once he'd been sentenced

Very, very odd family and programme.

I had to stop watching this after a little while, because it seemed like blatant exploitation of dim-witted people.

    Loughborough is a top uni.

Are you sure? Because a girl I know when to that Uni and had to ask me which came first in the alphabet, S or R!

But weird show indeed! It just felt like there was something odd about the whole family. The younger sister seemed to be the only one that was actually a bit switched on!

Just been talking to the mrs about it. And she cannot see what the programme was meant to achieve.

All i can see now for the poor girl is more notorioty along with hundreds of weirdos using her pics and finding her online( or worse in real life) to give her more abuse.

    What where the parents thinking????

    I truly dont get it

I think if anything hopefully it'll make younger viewers learn to a) not let their boyfriend take nudey photos of them and b) if they end up on the net, it's probably the boyfriend.

I agree with this. I also felt uncomfortable watching this as I thought she was obviously a vulnerable young woman who was being taken advantage of. I just couldn't make up my mind whether she was very brave in making this programme (and unbelieveably still being on FB) or very naive. Shame on the boyfriend.

One of my first boyfriends (about ten years ago) wanted to take a nudey photo of me. I told him where to go!
He was also a bit of a creep and would regularly hack into my hotmail account (this was loooong before myspace and facebook!!) He's also sometimes check my mobile phone because he was a bit controlling as well. It only lasted about 4 weeks before I chucked him! He actually followed me to Liverpool when I went up to visit my cousin on my birthday weekend. I never actually bumped into him so he could very well have been lying, but he'd text me things like that he was on the same train a few carriages down etc.

I wish more girls could recognise a controlling boyfriend when they see one and chuck them before it gets too serious. I guess I was pretty lucky. He tried to add me on facebook last year so I had a peek on his profile. The way he writes about his current girlfriend makes me feel like he hasn't changed one bit!

I read the article in the DM a few weeks back and was very surprised when the mother said (IIRC) that young people today do take nudey photos of each other. I know at 50 I'm somewhat of an old fogey, but the "young people" I know would not entertain that, unless I'm being somewhat naive.

Young people are probably less likely because they're more internet savvy and know that the photos could full well end up online somewhere.

It's like when celebrities let their boyfriends take a nudey photo and are soooo shocked when it circulates the web. Are they completely thick??

I'm glad you saw him as a control freak and acted on it. I just hope this programme makes younger people and their parents be more aware of this kind of thing and recognise the signs of someone's behaviour (as Ruth's behaviour must've changed) and act upon it straight away. Not let it drag on for years.

2 things which really annoy me about the poor exploitation of this girl.

    a. Why haven't Ch4 or the production company helped her to remove all the photos and videos of her on the internet. If they're going to make a documentary on her that's the least they could do! Especially with the power Ch4 hold they could easily have done something about it. I'm shocked to discover she can still be found online. I think that's really poor form from Ch4.

    b. Why wasn't there a reason given as to why Shane did what he did. Surely she would have wanted to know why. Did she not speak to him before he was sentenced? Did they not try to interview him or at least ask why?

BIB. Exactly! I would suspect it would help her come to terms with it. Also, I am surprised as well that C4 didn't even mention trying to get an interview with him as it just seemed to focus on her.

I would've thought someone, somewhere, could have removed all images and videos before making this programme.

I wasn't really watching the program, it was on in the background.

What power do you think Ch4 really have?
OK they've probably got a very expensive legal team on retention, but that costs money.
Once something is on the internet it gets bounced around from server to server all over the world.
She's probably on amateur porn sites mirrored all over the place now.
Not that I've managed to find anything juicy even with the search options changed, ahem.

Seriously it's not Ch4's 'job' to fix peoples problems, that would probably go beyond the remit as documentary makers.
OK they could help out if they wanted, but they don't have to.

So many DS'ers seem to be questioning Ch4 airing this at all and possible exploitation which is another matter.
Glad I didn't get into it now, more questions than answers by the look of the posts on here.

    That bloody rabbit!
Was it some kind of sexual metaphor?

I am not unfeeling to the girl's ordeal but all the main participants struck me as decidedly weird.

I haven't got a bally clue here, just bouncing ideas, so don't jump on me.

How could you legally get them taken down though?
If they're on various porn sites and she consented at the time.
You're probably getting into international law here, or you'd have to request every ISP individually takes them down as a matter of good will?
There's no telling how many are now saved on private punters machines, they could get reposted again under a different filename.
Keep checking the internet and making constant requests?

People with Aspergers can tell right from wrong, I wish if people were going to pretend someone was inflicted with this, they would at least learn the basics of it. Too many people using the Gary McKinnon excuse.

Ruth was on a Computer Sciences course. If she was embarrassed about telling her family about the fotos and the vids and fake messages to friends why oh why didn't she tell someone in her department who could give her expert, practical help to protect her accounts and online ID or even tracking down the culprit - or someone at the University in a pastoral care job who could give her some emotional help.

She was ill-advised to do this programme as it will only prolong her online notoriety. Her fotos and vids can never be erased, but would by now have been buried by tons and tons of other stuff.
