they made the presumption that anything with Julian Fellowes name attached would be a surefire winner. I guess he didn't have time to come up with anything original being involved in Downton, so he did Titanic. I think it's been disastrous for both JF and ITV
That posh nob Killwilly from Monarch of the Glen isnt he?
So has any popular 'story', do we need four hundred versions of Jane Eyre no there are plenty of other brilliant books. It's what people like.
Anyway I wish this show had been shown consecutively anyway we will see what happens in the end.
And yet I can't recall the superlative 70s version of Rebecca ever having been shown again on TV! Enough remakes, let's see some repeats of the greats!
'Calibre'? Really? It wasn't exactly Brideshead Revisited. The first series of DA was entertaining hokum underpinned by storylines taken straight out of soap opera. It was Eastenders with nice dresses but the second series was laughably poor. 'Titanic' is even worse.
I'm not claiming Downton Abbey is on a par with the classics like Jane Eyre etc, heaven forbid, but for what it is it's great Sunday night entertainment, the characters are fully rounded and not just one-dimensional - eg as the series progressed the upperclasses were not just stereotypes - Lady Mary for example seemed like that on the surface when the series started but has really blossomed into quite a complex character. I guess the problem with Titanic is it so condensed that you don't really have time for full character development which is a shame and which is why I think it would have benefitted from seeing it from the point of view of fewer characters and maybe going over say 8 episodes so that you had their stories as well as the disaster itself. I will watch it tomorrow and see if there is any improvement.
Looking on the bright side Meanwhile, opinions seem more favourable ahead of episode two. Despite already skimming through the scenes I wanted to see, I'm sure I'll watch the whole thing through.
"I'm reliably informed" that in tonight's episode, Len Goodman in the first class ballroom, bravely tries to continue to teach the tango to the upper echelons of New York society, despite being up to his knees in water.
I'm mentioned in it. I've been in touch with the reporter all week, fielding questions up until the last minute. Turned out
rather well; two of the images are screengrabs from my own website.
I do wish people would stop calling A Night To Remember the best Titanic film ever made! Its OK but it contained several glaring errors including a mysterious flight of steps between the Marconi room and the Bridge which didn't exist and a sinking that completely failed to take any account of the break up of the ship!
They didn't find out that the ship had broken in two until Bob Ballard's rediscovery of the Titanic in 1985.
Eyewitnesses mentioned that the rear of the ship was almost vertical in the water, then seemed to settle back a little. It was almost certainly at that point that the ship broke in two under the tremendous pressure and strain, before sinking entirely.
But it's easy to be wise in hindsight and it was only when the wreck was discovered that they realised that what the witnesses had seen, i.e. the ship "appearing to settle back" was when it had broken.
So that's why "A Night To Remember" which was made 27 years before the re-discovery of the Titanic, didn't show the ship breaking up.
I'm steeling myself for another "thrilling" episode of this tonight. Thank God I won't be alone in enduring it and can share the pain with the rest of you on this thread choosing to endure it with me.

Sadly I can't record two and watch one, and having been bored rigid by last week's episode there's no second chances on this ship.. Silent Witness and Homeland for me!

Jeez you are telling me, I completely agree, although it was Jane Austen I had in mind.
Be surprised if most of the saps who cried when Leo drowned have ever heard of the Lusitania or the Empress of Ireland to name two ill fated liners.

I didn't see one depiction of smoking not even after dinner cigars ......
Has Fellowes joined "ASH" or is this just another innaccuracy to add to the list
They looked rather flimsy.

He told me he was saving his pickled walnuts
Giant hats, dodgy CGI, hammy acting and all that jazz.
I thought it was quite dreary.
I'm not sure if I'll continue to watch the "Saturday Night Sinkings."
I'm sure I might be shouting at the screen, "Stay down you bastard!" before the end of the series.
