The Whale is not the only one who 'loses' his words - last week Lord Abbot said he couldn't believe it himself for forgetting his words only minutes into the show!

As we seem to be highlighting pronunciation and grammatical errors this morning, this is a bugbear of mine, especially amongst many LBC presenters. The errors occur regularly, amongst many of them, when saying 'less' rather than 'fewer' and 'amount' rather than 'number'. I'm probably getting crotchety in my old age, but it causes me to shout at the radio every time I hear it.

One of the worst offenders is James Whale. I really do think that presenters should be setting a good example.

Another one is "How are you?' (from the caller - a phrase which I know presenters don't like) with the presenter's response 'I'm good'. 'Good' means you are well behaved - what they should be saying is "I'm well, (or fine), thank you'. This, to me, is an insidious example of 'creeping Americanism'.

By the by - 'Berkhamsted' should not be pronounced like 'Hampstead' but like "Berkumsted' with the accent on the first syllable. Yes, I know, call me 'a berk' I don't mind! :)

You and I think as one.

One of my other pet hates is "Like I said...." which Petrie Hosken manages to say at least once every ten minutes.

Susan Bookbinder is disconcerting simply because the flat Northern vowels keep springing up unexpectedly amongst the carefully enunciated longer ones.

No point switching on at seven this evening. Thoughts to Iain Dale and hope he has news that enables him to be back soon.

As a fan of JW in his TalkSport days I've noticed him increasingly fluffing certain words. And sometimes it's as if he corrects himself mid speech. He's said 'gaaaaarn' a few times lately as if he was going to say something else then realised the word was 'gone'. He has also used the wrong word a few times and not realised.

Yes, that's an odd one. I know he lived in the USA for a number of years, but this 'garn' is the only inflection he seems to have retained - and he says it a lot. He's probably pretty good at archery, though:D

A big "Well Done", to AD and his handling of the numpty protester last night. What a silly woman, she didn't know what she was protesting about and made herself look a proper twerp. I was impressed with H, , he didn't belittle her, he let the listeners do that for him with their texts and messages.

Morning all, it's stopped raining here in the heart of England, hopefully I won't need my galoshes this morning. :)

Yes quite an interesting night, with AD yet again evolving into someone else removed from whatever he was before, Duncy poohs talking about standpipes while it rained cats and dogs and Steve Allen talking about Margaret Rutherford.

SA annoyed me about The Dame this morning.

He had a fascinating caller who revealed that he became an escort (no, not that type!) to Dame Margaret and was in the middle of what could have been some interesting stories, when SA interrupted with his take on it and started reeling off some Wikepedia type stuff about her, which is common knowledge anyway. We never did get to hear what inside info the caller had.

I suppose we have to be grateful he didn't trundle out his 'in this business' mantra.

I don't know how to double quote and do bold but you two crack me up with your comments. For anyone remotely interested it was archery comment and the Duncy pooh references. Thanks for the giggle, always welcome.

Excuse me for saying but Gilders if you're reading this at all, please come and say a few words about how you are. Feeling like cr@p probably but how are things? I know we're all strangers here but I've been thinking about you.

Excellent show from J O'B, possibly because, it being an election day, he's obliged to be politally neutral. Well, up to a point. He can't criticise the policies of the current bunch but he and the callers had a wonderful time slagging off Tony Blair.

    Morning all. :)

Several callers phoned in defence of TB - interesting discussion.... Not so, the Louise Mensch debate - one caller was allowed to deliberate over extensively on the subject - IMO, of course. :o

James read out a tweet, from Shane Ritchie, referring to him as an, 'Endearing Smart Ass.' ;)

Disappointed to miss the election 'fun', tomorrow - I will be at work.

    Enjoy Mystery hour, All. :)

He was really revelling in that, wasn't he .. and all the hate mail he gets .. he almost seemed proud of it :D

Yay! I heard 'Susan' phone in again to NF earlier (her of the very gloomy voice, but always speaks sense).

I know someone (in cyberland) who calls the internet the 'internets'

Ah yes, but calling the internet "the internets" or even "the internetz" is a cool and trendy "in" thing to do which is a nod and a wink to other cyberland dwellers that you are a member of the in crowd who is in the know about these things.

Sorry for being OT there, but I am finding LBC to still be rather bland and unworthy of much comment these days. Hopefully the wonderful JR2 will be really getting to grips with things soon and we will start to hear the station reach its full potential.

Makeba72, seems like you are another Danny Baker fan?

OR, I could be totally wrong :o

Whatever, I would love to have DB on LBC but with current affairs and news topics being the main agenda of LBC Management, that is never going to happen. Also, he often slags off LBC so maybe he much prefers working for the BBC.

    Hi CBS :)

Very proud of that particular tweet, wasn't he ?

Yes, I heard ' Susan ' - I am always amazed at the mental agility of many of the callers - which is why I love LBC. :)

You're spot on - I love Danny Baker's shows. Funny, clever, innovative and light-hearted without ever being patronising.

Good to meet a fellow Candyman fan, there are a few of us here.

As Chin has being asking for a long time now, where is the light and shade on LBC these days? More importantly - fun - J O'B's Mystery Hour is the only guarantee of a good laugh and I dread the day it is axed.

I miss Mystery Hour when James is away. Second only to the much missed Ken and Dave show in my opinion. James can be very annoying though when he tries to answer all the questions - I love it when he's wrong.

I really hope Ken returns to LBC when he loses the current Mayoral election which I'm sure he will (I'll be glad to eat my words but I doubt I'll have to).

Definitely a candyman fan, and I think I've been following him since his radio career began, but I've not found an accurate timeline to check it out for sure. I listened to his early morning Saturday shows on GLR in 1988/89 or thereabouts, when his show was the first thing on after the overnight silence. At least, I think my memory is right on that! I also think that Chris Evans took over or covered the same slot, too, at some point. If anyone can help with a proper timeline, I'd be grateful! I remember Danny's 'slap yourself if you're naked' phone-ins!

With heavy heart, I think Boris will win it. I'm not 100% behind Ken, but I think Boris gets a VERY easy ride from the press, etc given his actual record, both as an accountable mayor and in terms of his private life. But the up-side would be getting Ken back with Dave, which is genuinely among the best radio I've heard in many a year (Danny B aside!). DM has always liked to dominate the air-time, but Ken was better at keeping him in check than JS.

I like DB but, I believe, like other innovative presenters - Everett, Evans - he's a bit of a diva and not easy to work with. I couldn't see him holding down a solo radio show in the manner of Steve or any of the other current LBC presenters, without a couple of sidekicks to verbally bounce off. Wiki has a fairly comprehensive biog.

Oh joy. JS in with Iain tonight - 7-11pm.

It looks as though Borid will buck the anti-Government feeling and win but it might not be so easy for the Assembly candidates. If the Tories don't get enough seats to form a majority, we could end up with a lame duck Mayor who won't be able to get approval for the budget.

Thanks for the link - so my memory is probably right that Chris Evans sat in for Danny on that show, getting his first break on air, too, I think.

From what I gather about Danny B, I think he's just very clear on what he does in his show and, as a self-employed person offering a package, he either gets his way or refuses the gig. I don't know if this means he is hard to work with or whether you could interpret it as having artistic integrity. Who knows, but he doesn't strike me as a Diva.

I kinda' think that Borid, the typo, is a better name for him! :D

I'm probably wrong, but I had a feeling that the GLA was a toothless body, which was why Borid (!) had been able to largely ignore them and treat the Q&A sessions with some contempt. In other words, I didn't think they had a say on the budget, but again, I'm really not sure at all.

I think 'an unmade bed' describes him better.
I hope none of the main contestants wins.
But I'm not holding my breath.

Oh dear  I have to turn off - Iain has just announced Jacqui Smith as, ' Our special treat.'

I will probably succumb later - coz of the election results. He is on until 11.00 pm, tonight.

Glad his mother is better. :)

I didn't think he ever slagged of LBC, it seemed as if he was having a go at radio London when he thought 94.9 had got it wrong and 97.3
were on the bigger news stories faster.

As for the earlier post about Steve and The Dame I also instantly thought of Bowie.:)
