Just wondering your experiences on using them, I have a new pc this week and will have one of these in the machine. I know one rule is too not defrag it.

And if you are combining it with a traditional drive(s), then you can relocate your libraries from the SSD (unless you don't have much data).
That is an advantage of storing your user data on a traditional drive. If the SSD fails (not that I have any reason to believe it is more likely too than a mechanical drive), then the OS and applications can always be restored/repurchased.
Not to mention - backup backup backup!
The main speed benefits I find are when working with applications that do a lot of intensive drive access. Stitching photos with my old hard drive used to take about an hour to merge 100 22 megapixel images into a single file but with the SSD it now takes about 10 minutes.
you are right to be worried.
you could set your ssd to backup to your hdd.
Gone back to good old spinning platters for now.
Aside from all that, having one drive for Windows & programs and another drive (or at least a partition) for media & stuff is so much cleaner. I can format Windows at any time without much bother, because all the important files and stuff are on another drive.
Clever!
I was running low on space so have only just worked out how to move Steam to another drive but thought you could only install onto one drive via Steam. Some games obviously don't need a SSD but it would be nice for others to reduce loading time.
Noisy, how can it be noisy? i got a 120GB corsiar force 3, I had problems with it to start with, tried to update it and that failed, so sent it back to Corsair who sent me a new one updated.
No problems since with it and really fast. Been thinking of re-formatting the system, sticking windows 7 on and also Mint linux on the SSD, put a bit of software on it as well and then stick the rest onto my seagate hybrid.
They don't, there's no way it can be noisy! Must have been the fan or something. Unless it's one of those hybrid drives.
I got a hybrid drive as well, it is a 2.5inch drive, there would have be be a lot wrong with it to make a noise you could hear.
Sandforce chipset drives have had massive reliability issues, that's why I switched to Crucial M4 drives and never looked back.
Its faster, but the range of performance between drives of different makes/prices is so vast that one can't just speak of ssd's so generally.. spinning drives were all relatively the same when compared to how diverse ssd performance is.
Mine is fine now since Corsair updated the firmware. My mate got a crucial, seems ok
That's why I chose a Petrol drive as it uses a Indilinx controller.
last SSD system i built had two sata ii intel drives in raid 1. seemed safest.
Got Anno 2070 and Civ 5 on there at the moment. Love the load speed:)
Article here explains if anyone wants.
The CRASH was noisy! Usually due to the fact that I was watching something at the time, but up there with my old GTX260 hard crash for nastiness! Obviously not a mechanical failure:D Was ready to RMA it then saw that the firmware had a flash related entry so gave it a shot despite the numerous reports of bricked drives due to a bad fw update! Smooth as a Lexus now though:)
