Caught speeding by a moving car?
Hi,
First of all, I know I was speeding, I know I did wrong, etc.
There's an area of a dual carriageway that is briefly 50 then goes to 70. Because the road was mostly empty I sped up to 70 early for the 70 zone and, stupidly, didn't notice a police car in front of me. I passed him at 70 about
30 metres before the national speed limit sign then tucked in in front of him, doing maybe 68-70 as I progressed into the 70 zone.
He followed me for a while and I wasn't sure if he'd noticed. As we slowed down for the roundabout he pulled to my right and wound his window down while still slowly going to the light and asked why I was doing 70 in a 50 zone. I apologised etc. He said something like "Well, doing that is 3 points on your license so be careful".
He didn't write anything down or stop at all. Could I get points/a fine for this? I mean, I know I can get it for speeding, but is it likely that in this instance I'll get fined/points or do you think that was a warning? I don't know if there's something to automatically record and submit it in a police car?

Yes, I agree.
but what you got was a warning.
Police traffic cars do have kit to measure speed to a standard required in a court if it came to that. A bog standard patrol car probably doesn't.
Lucky for you he just gave you a warning. I got caught out on the A500 years ago, but the A50 is just as bad with hardly anyone sticking to the limit!
I would probably say it's the A500 going northbound just after stoke going past the turn off for asda wolstanton, or hanford.
Caught red-handed! A500 southbound, I accelerated at the Trentham bridge and I think the police car came on at Trentham before the speed limit change. Seeing somebody doing the speed limit on the A500 in the 50 zone is a surprise, most just do whatever they feel like, so I guess I just didn't bother regulating my speed anymore when it seemed safe.
Will be careful in the future.
The 50mph limit on that stretch of the A500 is crap, in fact I hate the 70/50/70 change on the A500 all together and usually coast along at about 65 regardless.
He sounds like he gave you a warning, what car was he driving?
Must admit I rarely drive that part at less than 60 and few vehicles do. The A50 can also be a bit of barsteward where the 50 sections kick in......feels like you may as well get out of the car and give it a shove!
A marked police car chased my friend down the M11 a couple of years ago. He was doing about 110mph at the time. He didn't get a warning, he was pulled-up and nicked!
Most people do. That doesn't make it right, though. I'm not sure what car he was driving, I only really saw it from the side when he pulled into the lane next to me.
Oh? Probably. I don't know. It goes over the road that has a load of lights and speed cameras and Trentham Gardens/Estate I'm terrible at knowing the names of particular areas of Stoke/Staffs.
I'm going to be doing the A50 towards Tamworth (turning off somewhere, obviously) when I start my new job in September.
Quackers, I know what you mean. I think the 40 sign is advisory?
Galaxy, you're right. I'm not going to push my luck! Felt like an absolute tool on the way home though, slowed down to 50 as appropriate and every single vehicle on the road overtook me. Even a truck.
I was not so lucky 45 years ago when I was caught doing 40mph in a 30mph zone by a policeman on a motorbike. He did not issue me with a ticket but a summons arrived through the post a month later. I was fined £10 which is comparatively far more than for the offence now. Procedures may have changed since then.
