My mum drives me mad by saying "sanGwiches" "panGcakes" and "ColDslaw" And she seem incapable of using the word Automatically, she will insist on saying things like "It happens automatic." AAAGGGHHH
My mum drives me mad by saying "sanGwiches" "panGcakes"[...]
Isn't that a west of Scotland thing? I tend to pronounce it "samwidge", which I know isn't quite the 'proper' way to say it, but that's how everyone around me said it when I was growing up, so it's stuck.
I loved Beyonce at Glastonbury but everytime she said it, it was GLASTONBERRY and drove me nuts.
Well, when I say "bury" it sounds exactly the same as when I say "berry". Is it a northern thing? Thinking of the way people from Bury pronounce it more like "Boo-ry".
It is nearly always peonounced as con-dole-ence now... with the accent on the second 'o'.
Traditionally it ought to be 'cón-doll-ence' with the accent on the first 'o'.
i.e. it should rhyme with 'indolence'
So, you actually pronounce it CONdolence yourself? If so, that's truly remarkable.

Yeah same, but I think the correct pronunciation of Glastonbury is Glaston-bree. I could be wrong though..
One that gets me is the frequent American pronunciation of names by running the two parts together and emphasising the first sylable not the last. So you get "rObinhood" instead of "robin hOOd" and similar.
The one that really irritates me is one that seems to have crept in in the last 5 years or so, and that is pronouncing 'sixth' as 'sickth'. Newsreaders seem to be the main culprits.
My pet peeve is people who can't be bothered to pronounce 'th' properly. I'll accept there maybe a few with an impediment but mostly it's people who can't be bovvered, who fink it's acceptable to speak like vat.
I work in a school and one of my roles is to teach phonics. It makes me tear my hair out to hear teachers saying 'nuh, duh, muh, fuh', after I have spent a lot of time teaching the children how to pronounce the sounds correctly.....

Lots of Scottish people say Dezember too.
I do that! Only when I'm talking to another Scottish person, though

Personally, I'd either remove it from the shelf or take it off it...
Much as I like The Noisettes' music, that line in "Never Forget You" always makes me wince!
Here too!

I do!! I'm holding out
I've little reason to say it often.... but when I do, I have to give people a lesson!
Skellington

Has pronounced As and vice versa
Febuary instead of February is another one that pees me off.
Shouldn't it really be "I removed the plant FROM the shelf"?
My most hated one is (usually) newsreaders, who say "corter" instead of "quarter".
Also (although it's nor really a mispronunciation), people who say "math" instead of "maths".
Hate that, and hate it when they say littel as well
You fill my litt-el world right up - worst offender! The Feeling!
And how many people spell it like that on message boards? A lot of bad spelling has to be linked to pronunciation.
I hate it when people write appauling as well. Why stick a U in the middle??
Really, really winds me up!
weather forecasters,and announcers.
