I hope some girls turn on the TV and see women doing well and being praised for working hard and doing well in the same sports that men are doing. Sport is alien to a lot of girls and women. The fashion now is to be super feminine, to the extent that the supposed ideals for women can look like something from a cartoon! And to the poster above, that has filtered down to young ladies who rush out to buy tan, false eyelashes, high heels to totter around in etc. Perhaps if more young people saw their friends being inspired and trying out a sport, they might give it a go as well. More exercise would do the nation a world of good, both body image wise and for the high rates of depression.

Good old Olympics, where it's suddenly ok to drool over young girls and boys. But only when it's the Olympics.

The drooling that the DM was doing over the tight knickers and bras on display at the beach volley ball was funny. They do have a sense of humour at times!

There were females in the parade?

Sorry, I didn't notice. I was too busy looking at Tom Daley.

Is this a new thing then? Did we not see 'beautiful, healthy female forms' at Beijing or Sydney?

Ok, sarcasm mode off. Yes, it would be great if kids saw these athletes and were inspired by them in some way, but if we're still hoping for and discussing it today, history suggests that simply doesn't happen for the very vast majority of kids.

I've been ogling age-appropriate male swimmers. And Chris Hoy's thighs and legs. Good Lord Chris Hoy's thighs and legs... there should be a law that he is only allowed to wear cycling shorts and the odd kilt.

    kinda patronizing really though.

you can't brainwash people that way. its like the women who like to say big is beautiful, people who talk like that aren't convincing anyone because everyone knows if something is true its kinda self evident, you dont' have to do convincing in the first place.

the whole role model thing is also kind of suspect. the truth is people only set their acceptability on what they see in real life around them, it is why studies show that if your friends are fat, you will more likely be as well. its also why western nations get ever fatter, it doesn't matter how many skinny models or olympic athetes they see on the tv..only matters in real life in daily reality.

as for super hard bodies being convincingly the "hottest" thing to men and thus something girls/women would obviously aspire to... not so much, its better than being fat sure, but you only have to look at porn to see that rippling muscles are hardly the most desired form. girls know this, you can't trick them so easily.

Bib 1 - I don't know, I think that young girls ARE 'brainwashed' a bit though, by the bombardment of images in the media that they compare themselves to and some try to emulate.

Bib2 I don't agree with that either - I do agree that people try to emulate those around them, but there are many girls who emulate media stars, the popularity of Katie Price and the massive increase in boob jobs is testament to that.

There is also a sense amongs some young girls that looks are the only important thing.

Bib 3 - yes, lots of men don't like rippling muscles, but lots of the atheletes are just beautifully covered and strong, not body builder types.

And perhaps young girls should be encouraged to be the best of what they can be, and be strong and healthy, not just think that they must bow to what the latest porno popular look is. (After all that changes).

The men and women are at the peak of their fitness, train every day and eat a very strict diet, thats not really practical to expect all young men and women to do. Yes their bodies are amazing but they're far from the "norm" or "average" thats years of dedication honed on those bodies.

They do look amazing and i hope they do inspire some people but i doubt they will, as others have said they'd rather look up to the towie lot who are fake hair, fake tan, fake nails, fake boobs etc etc and seem to become rich and famous for being stupid :/

what a waste huh? Ive been including our olympic team in my prayers, i wish them all the best i think they're doing us proud so far.

I appreciate that years of training have gone into those bodies, but just a bit of swimming and dancing can produce a good body.n Exercise also makes people feel better.

The athelete's figures are the result of trying to be the best in their sport, but people can look good without being champions of anything.

I know that a lot of young people would rather use Towie and all that as inspiration, but I do hope that SOME might be inspired to do a bit of exercise and accept their figures more.

The variety of forms in the Olympics is good for people to see, i think.

I thought the australians bitching about one of their swimmers being "fat" was disgusting to be honest and equally as disgusted by Frankie "wanka" Boyles remarks about Rebecca Adlington shes not there as a beauty queen her looks dont and shouldnt matter i think shes an amazing girl and he should be made to apologise its not like shes some zlist celeb famous for doing nothing and fair game.

Yes I hate it too. And yet again it is symptomatic of the sort of attitudes that girls and women have to deal with.

The athletes don't train specifically to look good, their figure is a by-product of their sport. Training just to get a fit/strong body takes far less dedication. Almost anybody can do it with a little hard work and effort.

Ive recently been ridiculed by my lil band of haters on another site as having a jaw like desperate dan and being ugly, funny thing is the person saying those things used to message me on here apologising in ims saying they arent a racist and how im very attractive and they would love to date me if i lived nearer. So i take comments men like that and men like Frankie Boyle make as just bitter and a pathetic hes getting a cheap laugh out of making someone feel bad about what they see in a mirror, i suspect he dosent like what he sees himself.

I agree. And people can do something they enjoy doing, for the joy it brings - AND get a much better body along the way.

When I was dancing four days a week I looked damned good (not like an athlete mind, but good for me).

It's childish - insulting someone's looks in an argument belongs in the playground (and should be checked there).

And you are very beautiful Pet.

    1. no, because you can bombard these kids with images of fat women or ugly women all you want, you wouldn't be able to convince them that was the way to go.

    2. a few do but they would have regardless. people with brains compare, and perhaps sometimes emulate but thats what brains do. but looking at the total population, most people are emulating fat people, not super models. so thats the evidence...

furthermore the complaints aren't even consistent, if katie jordan has giant tits and skinny runway models are flat as a board, and most hollywood actresses are as well(kiera knightley etc), then who exactly are they being brainwashed into emulating? it really doesn't make sense once you think about when complaining the media is what drives boob jobs.

    3. even the non body builder types tend to be not that attractive to men. the broad shoulders of runners for instance, given the choice men would find a less "hard" looking woman more attractive. its just how it is, and women know it.

"encouraged" tends to be a bit patronizing, you don't hear this kind of talk with boys. sometimes I wonder if people are talking to girls or morons, if looked at objectively the "concern" is laced with implicit assumptions that the targets for well intentioned manipulation are just rather dim.

    1. Do you think the women competing in the Olympics are fat and ugly?

    2. I don't think most fat people want to be fat - they're not 'emulating' fat people, they just eat too much and don't take enough exercise.

The media doesn't have to be 'consistent' to affect people. There are many anorexics as there are many girls that fake everything they can, including opting for plastic surgery.

3.I don't think you can say that, actually, that's just your opinion. Many men have and do like strong, healthy women, thin or more muscular.

Plenty of girls ARE actually large framed, or athletically built and they are still attractive to men. And these things change constantly.

To say that 'men prefer' narrow shouldered softer women, and that women know it (and therefore want to emulate it) is also odd because it also assumes that women automatically want to please men as a first priority, in spite of themselves and their natural bodyshape. In fact that they assume that they are unattractive to men if they do not have this build. That's pretty negative for most of the female population.

    Mmmmm.

Also we don't 'encourage' boys in this way, because they are under pressure, but not to the same degree.

And also, the variety of male shapes, healthy and strong are considered DESIRABLE automatically.

Unlike the sporty women, that you express an unhelpful, but not atypical attitude towards.

I've been watching the Olympics a bit obsessively.

I think it's great to see all the athletes do their thing, but it just occurred to me that it was wonderful that our image obsessed young girls are being shown different images of the female form.

Not false, not anorexic, but healthy, varied and very beautiful

This can only be a good thing.

Do you think it could make a difference?

I think it'd take more than the Olympics, mainly because sportsmen and women of that calibre might be seen as on another plane entirely from the average girl watching. Between her and them is a lifetime of physical effort and sacrifice that is beyond the comprehension of most. The skinny models touted as the ideal, though, are another matter. You can make someone believe that all she has to do to look like them is to buy this dress, this handbag, etc. It's a lot easier.

That said, I'm in approval of the physiques on show, both men and women.

I don't expect anyone to work as hard as these athletes, their bodies are the result of their training for a sport so hard.

But anybody can be inspired a bit to do a bit more exercise, take up something for fun, and for some girls it might make them think there are other ways to look good than what is generally on show.

beach womens volleyball been excellent ! except the us team decided to wear t shirts (boo) but it was cold last night yet it did not affect the ladies they was playing against.. (horray).
Actually the game is easy to understand and strangely all the tickets have been sold in all events !
That being compared with the hundreds of empty seats at wimbledon and the gymnstics.
    Who will win the medals?
Australia, brazil ,cuba and the USA forget about the rest !
The only reason why the UK team entered is that they have too basically
