Newcastle's stadium has been renamed to St James' Park, at the request of Wonga.

Wonga purchased the naming rights but decided to use this to rename the ground back to St James' Park

:D

Did anyone apart from the tv companies who were contractually obliged to call it the previours name, do so?

I hope that the sign that was recently taken down outside of the stadium, will be put back up again now.

    Brilliant News!!!! :D:D

At last, a sign of common sense, maybe others should look at the delight this will generate within clubs. I have always said it will never be other than St James' Park to me - know it well from when I lived up that neck of the woods, great stadium!

I've heard it'll be back up before the Sunderland away game. :)

I can't say I have heard anyone outside the media call it anything other.

Will be nice to see the st james' park sign back up, didn't like seeing it get torn off with crowbars

High risk marketing from Wonga. Should make a big story and get them a lot of short term publicity, but will it cost them in long term publicity?

I'd be surprised if they didn't get their name in there somehow though.

Wonga know that a lot of fans have already publicly rejected,, and strongly being linked with them as sponsor. It was the best move they could possibly have made but they won't win everyone over that's for sure.

From a business point of view that is surely brilliant for Mike Ashley. He changes the name for one year then gets money from a company to rename it back to what it originally was.

I'd agree with that. Some people who think he is a bit of a fool, its him fooling them.

I doubt he made all his money by being a wally brain.

Nice for Newcastle, but this is going to make people sympathise and even be somewhat fond of what's a horrible, horrible company.

    PR masterstroke!

Money into the charity foundation, millions into the youth academy, fans forums and helping to design a new kit.

    Absolute genius

Yep, unfortunately Wonga will charge us 4,214% APR on that credit.

Colin Murray called it St. James' Park on MOTD2 the other night. He said it would always be that for him.

Not sure if it had stayed the same he would have had a talking to to refer to it as the 'official' name.
    Guess it doesn't matter now.

Nice to see Newcastle United giving back to the community in the form of loan sharks promotion.

I love all the uproar and outrage suddenly.

Where was all this with Hearts and Blackpool being sponsored by them. Villa are sponsored by Genting Casinos, Everton-Chang Beer, Stoke-Bet365, Swansea-32Red, West ham- SBOBET and Wigan- 12BET.

Now you may not agree with what Wonga do but i'm surprised by the amount people/media are outraged with this when gambling and alcohol companies are widely accepted amongst the football community

    Agreed 100%

    Here's some examples
Prior to the announcement, Football Association general secretary Alex Horne expressed some concern that the deal was with a loan company.

Sorry but it's nothing to do with FA im not complaining they're spending £105m on a luxury centre or spent £800m on a new stadium. The FA should look at themselves before others.
    Labour MP
"This business makes profits off the back of deprived people who are desperate and who are the most vulnerable in society."

    Common misconception.
Wonga makes it's money through people who can actually repay the loan not the deprived who cannot.

It never had a new name anyway, except for those in the media, who had to call it by the corporate name

Like those people who always mention who sponsors the Premier League.

I would have sacked Owen Coyle last season for that alone ;)

Or a perfectly legal company that offer short term loans to people in financial difficulty. One or the other.
