I didn't bother looking past the first few but no way is that list in any order. Not even the most delusional Adele fan on the forum would put her at #1 .
I'm a fan of Adele actually, she's not a massive favorite of mine, but yeah, she's clearly a great talent. Why she's at number one is beyond me, she shouldn't even be in the top twenty. Winehouse at sixth? What planet are these people on?
Loretta Lynn as god damn low as 45th? No sign of Joan Jett? Ugh.
The list lost credibilty by putting Adele first. Come on, she's got a few more songs to write before she's worthy of such a title, and it's not like her songwriting is anything spectacular.
And...wow, so many amazing artists missing. Most notably...Mariah Carey. I think many seem to forget she writes her own songs. All of them, unless they're covers.
I'm with you here, if this list is in some sort of order then it is one of the worst lists I've seen in a while. Adele number 1 but has pretty much written only one album as a whole solo? What a total joke.
Its a list written by dummies for dummies, its totally null and void like most of these sorts of lists, its a list based on one persons opinion not reality.

Oh yes they would;) As adele is on that list then her hired team of co-writers should be sharing the title with her.
As lists go that is one of the most appalling lists I've seen.
When Radio 6 Music celebrated their 10th anniversary they compiled a chart of singer/songwriters who had chosen their favourite songs by acts who had influenced them from the past 10 years.
Out of 500 lists the top rated female was Kate Bush (6th) behind Bowie; Dylan; The Beatles; Rolling Stones & Led Zeppelin.
For her to be ranked only 18th is an insult.
And FFS at the complete and utter joke of having Adele at #1; Taylor Swift is more deserving of that accolade; whilst I think Britney Spears & Rihanna have written more songs than Barbra Streisand. ..... and I could go on and on and on but that list is just awful.
I can't wait to see when they do a list of the Best 50 Bands ever as at this rate One Direction will be #1; and they'll place Oasis ahead of The Beatles.
Not the ones I am thinking of havn't yet;) But like most of these lists they are just done for a laugh and this one looks like its come out of a christmas cracker. But it was in the telegraph newspaper so enough said I think.
Why? She does sing, she did compose some songs. Why is everybody assuming that it's a list made after how many songs someone composed? It clearly isn't. Or maybe I don't get some intricacies of English language...
Kate Bush should've been in the top 5 at least! Adele number 1? What a joke!
I disagree. Kate Bush's last two albums from 2011 failed to make any bigger impression salewise. One went Gold, another Silver. In the UK. None of them made it to #1 anywhere.
Adele on the other hand... well, we all know if we care to know. Her sales went through the roof almost everywhere. She broke all kind or records, got almost every possible award she could get. And she got critical acclaim as well.

Does it matter if Kate Bush's albums never got the sales that Adele got.
This isn't about sales, it is about songwriting and Kate Bush is one of the best songwriter's out there. She is an incredible songwriter, hell she has even changed how i write my songs.
I love Adele but let's be honest, 21 was not all down to her. Kate Bush is the sole writer on the majority of her albums.

How do you know that's what it is about? There criteria the authors of the list went after aren't mentioned, are they?
It's clearly not just sales, not just how many songs an artist wrote, not trying trying to figure out who is best. Looking at the list I would say that the authors are trying to weight in different factors, including sales, including quality, and probably other things, and they came out with the list of the top female singers/songwriters at the moment - not an all-time list. If you look at it this way, having Adele on top of the list absolutely makes sense.
I get that people disagree. There is no such list in the world that everyone would agree upon. But come with arguments you can back up in the discussion. And I don't think you can back up the statement that the list's authors meant songwriting. They don't say it, neither the list indicates this. If they meant just songwriters, the singer part wouldn't even be included in the list's title, and the list would probably look very different.
If it bothers people that much why doesn't someone ask the author of the list by replying to this tweet. She'd probably be chuffed that someone actually showed some interest:
She may have been included in the list merely because her composition, "Evergreen", won an Academy Award.
Buffy Sainte-Marie has also written an Oscar-winning song (Up Where We Belong) and a folk standard (Universal Soldier) plus many many albums of her own material. I don't know why she wasn't included.
I wasn't aware of Aretha Franklin actually composing anything either, although she is obviously a great singer.
Dolly Parton is a good inclusion. She doesn't always get the musical credit she deserves.

Adele at number 1 seems a little premature given the longevity of other artists, but shes easily top 5 (the VH1 list has her at 5)
Agreed!;)

Totally. Rubbish list.

I don't twitter but I bet you 5 English pounds she says the list is not in any sort of order. Probably the first 50 names that popped into her head .

Nowhere near the list thank goodness. It features real talent, for starters:D
