I only saw this advertised earlier in the evening so it was an unexpected pleasure for me. It's a good reminder of what a great actor Derek is. Some of those EE posters over on the soap forums who think Jake Wood is the best actor ever should be forced to watch!:D
My only slight problem is the time it is shown because Holby is a guilty pleasure I rarely miss and I don't always like to watch too much TV in one go. I'll probably record it in future and watch later.
And I was thinking Tuesday nights were going to be dull without The Paradise.
A rare scheduling masterstroke from the BBC to follow Paradise with this - a completely different drama, yet no doubt a lot of viewers who liked Paradise will have happily picked this up.
As with TP, really nice to have something 'gentle' to watch at this hour rather than the usual diet of cop dramas / reality drivel.
I really enjoyed this, I was assuming it would just be about Celia and Alan but obviously there are going to be other issues with the 2 families, husbands death/other couple's marriage issues, etc. and the lovely Dean Andrews (could do without the beard) was a bonus ! Will certainly be tuning in next week.
Its really nice to have a drama centred around the older generation and its a feel good programme thats perfect for winter and part of a christmas schedule.
The hour flew by!
I really liked Annie reid in life begins with caroline quintin so I knew she would do well. Where do I recognise the guy from though?
Feel Good....not me, I could have done without the, awful families and bleak surroundings...is their no Drama, in normal families...:(
Was where he parked his car really Skipton? Looked a lot like Hebden Bridge.
The car park certainly isn't in Skipton. From what I know of the town, only some of the car chase scenes were actaully shot in Skipton, like the bit going found the roundabout.
I enjoyed this with praise in particular for Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid.
The scenes with the outdoor market were in Stockport market in Manchester.
Stockport is a Metropolitan Borough , a Metropolitan Borough of Greater Manchester not in Manchester !
Stockport became a county borough in 1889.
A bit like Salford (75,000) is not in Manchester, another Metropolitan Borough of Greater Manchester, but Stockport is so much larger, around 150,000 inhabitants.

But I know what you mean !!
A bit pedantic but point taken. I live in Stockport and put Manchester for those who haven't a clue where Stockport is.
Anne Reid blows everyone else away really for me. She is utterly fantastic. That's not to say Derek Jacobi and Sarah Lancashire aren't also very fine actors (and the others, sorry I haven't learned their names) but Anne is in a class of her own in this.
I LOVED it! an excellent production beautifully acted by the three leads.
What a great and varied acting career Anne Reid has had since she left Coronation Street 50 years ago. I am sure that she doesn't envy Bill Roache, who may be more comfortably off, but has hardly stretched his modest acting talents since he joined Corrie in 1960.
I haven't watched this yet, have it recorded and will watch tonight. But must agree with your assessment of Anne Reid's career. She has appeared in all kinds of things, very very different productions, comedy and drama, showing her incredible versatility and bravery as an actor. It was the best thing she ever did leaving Coronation Street.

loved this first episode. Acting was great and it was a joy to watch two old-hands doing what they do best. Nice change to have something about older people and a gentle, family-based story which makes a change from most of the 9pm dramas on TV. Great writing and script.

It's all on youtube.
I'm so glad to see him on our screens again.
Derek Jacobi is Wallace
Anne Reid is Gwendoline.
Same accents, same hairdo's.
It is so similar as to be scary !!
Only just watching it off PVR, nicely written and juxtaposition of scenes.
I think I can guess, unfortunately, how it will end.
Only one possible ending when it's a winter love
Fun in the meantime though to spend their dosh and leave the kids to fight.
You mean when the farmer's daughter admits that her son's father is his uncle?
And the headmistress's husband admits he was kicked out?
(Not spoilers - I've just made them up. )
Sally Wainwright is a guest on BBC Look North tonight, SKY channel 956 @ 6:30pm
I loved the car chase !
I'm guessing you will not be wrong....

I was born in Stockport.
That's what I see coming.
Why do things have to be signposted for us?
Of course I know it's condensed into time restrictions. Good writers abound but they come last in the budget.

University graduate (very rare in the 1950s, especially oop north, common as muck now)
called Ken
had affairs with scores of women?
ha! well spotted!

She was very good with Daniel Craig in The Mother
It's in another class altogether to The Paradise. I thought that was pretty poor and gave up after a couple of episodes.
Sorry, that's already happened.;)
