There are of course many but for me from a pure techincal aspect it has to be la villa strangiato by Rush.
Its not the full song but this extract of rush playing it live from 1979 is mindblowing, alex lifeson's guitar work is amazing.

Mogwai - Summer
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Mladic
Hope of the States - The Black Amnesias
Ultravox - Astradyne
Pink Floyd - One of These Days (does that count? Can we exclude the "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces" line as a lyric?)
My Bloody Valentine - Glider
Art of Noise - Beatbox

Genius!
or Sylvia by Focus
Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group
A few other examples -
This Will Destroy You - Threads
Explosions In The Sky - Your Hand In Mine
Worlds End Girlfriend - We Are The Massacre
Well the whole song's bloody great but it's not an instrumental.
Also nice to see a few devoted rock fans on a somewhat pop music forum.:D
indeed, i too was pleasantly surprised that many retro threads got a decent response. theres more adult music fans on here then is at first obvious.

Part 2 starts at 2.20.
I normally find rock related threads quicky vanish to page 2 of the music forums but nice to see this one still near the top.
And its great to remember some of those great intrumental songs that I have long forgot about, great music lives forever, and thats the case with songs mentioned in this thread.:)
Have you seen this one at a foo fighters concert after the dum solo geddy and alex come on stage for a a bit of YYZ,
