Yep, confirmed on the Doctor Who Facebook page - is 5.15 the earliest it's been on since the NuWho began? It's rather early, but it usually clashes with Christmas dinner in my family, so I'm not too bothered.
People on GB are running around like headless chickens.
It can't have escaped the BBC's attention that 5:15 was the time the first episode ever was broadcast, I think they have chosen that slot for tactical reasons, ratings-wise, but also as a nod to the upcoming anniversary.

Yes, we'd better prepare ourselves for an outbreak of paranoia.
Never mind that Doctor Who has once again been awarded a coveted Christmas Day slot - for no less than the eighth consecutive year. This is clearly a sign the BBC want it axed!
In truth, Who's earlier start is just a reflection of Call the Midwife's arrival in the schedule, rather than any sort of judgement on the show itself.
... which is exactly what has happened mememe. Average ratings for series 7 part 1 are 7.95 million IIRC, so it looks like series 7 as a whole is going to match or even top the average 8million that series 4 got :p:p
Jesus never let it be said that DW fans aren't pessimistic. If anything you could argue that 17:15 is a far more suitable slot than post 19:00 as its even more family orientated. Quite why later showings are often seen as more prestigious is beyond me. Any earlier would be a problem but hey, yet again our show is a key part of the biggest day of TV on the biggest channel in the country. Let's celebrate that fact eh?
Perfect time for me. Would have finished eating dinner and would be slumped on the sofa.
Also just because it has been mentioned above. The average consolidated figures for Series 7 so far is better than series 3, 4 and 6. That is of course without including the Christmas special.
So it's not doing too badly
An early start isn't such a big deal on Christmas Day as people are generally home for the majority of the day.
That said - this isn't a surprise. DW's total ratings are just as good as ever but its live ratings have been falling and the BBC like to win Christmas Day and live ratings are what it is all about.
It's great news for me, I maybe even be in the last vestiges of soberness by that time rather than the usual merry and drunken viewings that accompanies most Xmas Specials!
Yep most of the time slots on Christmas Day are superb showcases for programmes, don't agree with Tom Spilsburys Twitter comments about needing it on later, its going to avoid strong competition anyway. Little worrying that BBC One seems to be so overly excited about Call The Midwife they've given it 75 minutes! However if this is what's keeping the viewing nation happy.. well on it must go!

:D:D
Most Xmas specials would be more tolerable when drunk, I think.
This one looks to be of a higher standard however, so fingers crossed.

That's because it's not just a Christmas special. It's the companions first episode (as this character at least).
It'll be interesting to see how they do it, I haven't been overly keen on Matt's Christmas episodes - nothing to do with Matt, the stories haven't appealed to me. I don't think I've rewatched either of them! But I've got my hopes up a bit more for this episode. Usually I enjoy the companions first episode.

Yep, Clara's first episode plus being a transition between 7a and 7b make it seem a bit more than a traditional Christmas special.
Poor Matt he's so good in them too but the last two christmas episodes go down as the worst of his reign. He's the best thing in them. Give him a decent story

I found The Christmas Carol one improved with rewatching. Last year's though was just televisual excrement.

It's incorporating Call The Midwife into the schedule that seems the main reason for the earlier start.

The show will never go back to the peak it was at a few years ago, ratings wise.

Nothing new there then.
