What are the good points about Smart TV,s?
will they get more Apps and be able to do more things with them or are they a thing that will end up like 3D tellys?

Have you just woken up from a 5 year coma?!
Hardly the norm yet
I also wonder how many people buy these smart TV sets and yet they never even get a sniff of a internet connection.
At some point in time I will need to renew my Tv set, I don't need or require a smart or 3D set, just a basic set that works, plasma if possible.
To be honest i would love a nice 42 inch plasma with no tuner, but that is not possible. i know you can get large LCD monitors, but i am not paying that price.
How have 3DTV's ended up ?.
Considering a decent standard 42" TV can cost almost the same as what we paid for our TV, you'd be silly not to pay the extra.
That is correct. Most 3D TVs that are for sale now are just no good (most... not all). You need larger than 37" screen and a very good 3D technology to achieve good 3D experience. Not to mention the 'convenience' of wearing ridiculous glasses. And the price... well a good 3D TV costs well over £500.
On the other hand smart TVs are an excellent solution for lazy people like me who like to enter the YouTube app and watch the favorite channel in seconds.
I use the smart features of my Sony KDL-32EX650 almost every day and I am pleased I spent a bit more for a smart TV.
I think 3D tellys would become better but now they are just not worth it (I forgot to mention most 3D tv usually mess up the picture and reduce overall quality as well). 3D TVs now are like the first smartphones, just not good enough... yet.
3D is a total joke. I hardly use it on my GT50 which is up there as one of the best 3D picture producers.
It was expensive to get going with 3D and tbh the novelty wares off in 3 mins.
The DLNA and Viera connect however are great for iplayer, youtube, web surfing, playing videos, pictures, music from the PC to the TV & Sound system.
Its a feature (along with DLNA) that eclipses 3D.
I have a 'SMART' TV for over a year now, got one as a matter of interest.
What I actually use of the SMART features are BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, Youtube. DLNA display device.
BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, Youtube actually perform better with the SMART TV than the PC(rather old).
DLNA display device for photos, but not video as getting videos into the right file/format/codecs is far too time consuming.
The SMART TV web browser is no use at all.
So for a small range of facilities SMART TV does a good job. I would not hope for many, if any more facilities to be added, the hardware is very limited and only supported for a relatively short time.
Comparisons with the flexibility of a PC and it's plethora of applications, functionality, and storage space are rather pointless except for the facilities mentioned.
The latest LG Cinema 3D passive sets are a world away from the flickering, dark, tiring, eye aching, expensive glasses, active shutter sets.
I agree. Just finished watching "House of Wax" on mine: brilliant!
They're great though, as they are pushing the price of non-smart sets right down.
Try telling that to Goodwin -- he thinks my eyes are faulty for pointing that one out
I have to agree. We have just purchased the LG 42LM620T with Cinema 3D and it is excellent. It's not dull or flickering and you can watch it for hours without any eye-strain at all.
The 3D quality is superb and it does an excellent job of converting 2D > 3D. I'm thoroughly impressed.
I agree, and they will get even better. Until then quality Full HD LED panel is just fine for me.
For me, it means I can buy a large screen without the info going back to the TVL. At some point i will need to buy a new TV as mine is getting old and I have no idea how much longer it will last, also newer sets are lighter and less power hungry.
But if I went into a shop and got myself a TV, they would send my info to the TVL and then I would get letters again and all that crap.
If I can get a large 42 inch monitor that would not happen, but the prices are way too high.
What the point in paying the extra if it is never going to be used? I got no need for a smart Tv, but I do have need for for a screen. My PS3 does what I want and when it goes belly up I will get another PS3 even if it is second hand to replace it.
Whats not to like ... built in iPlayer, ITVPlayer (although currently not working on my unit), Netflix, Lovefilm, Acetrax, internet, networking ... and all for probably pennies worth of hardware ....
why does anyone think they will suddenly give up on the concept of Smart TVs ?
Some of the apps are pretty pointless ... but so are many on my phone and id never suggest that Smart Phones will be obsolete soon
If anyone wants to turn a TV into a 'smart' TV easily I can heartily recommend the MK802 units to run Android through your TV Whilst we have Samsung 'smart' in the living room and kitchen we have mk802/android 'smart' upstairs
That would annoy me, i know my facebook is connected with Netflix, but I only done that just to have a nose, the only thing it does is show me what other people have watched and them what i have watched, at least I have the option to share it or not.
Having something keep coming up on the screen as i am watching would get very annoying for me. if i watch something I want to watch ti.
i can see smart Tv set becoming the norm, in fact I can see them wanting to have more information from you and eventually adverts will be chucked at you at much the same way Google do on the net.
it will come a time where you will not be able to use a Tv without it being connected to the net even if you only want to watch terrestrial.
Sure that will be many years away, but it will come.
Yeah, a small computer in other words.
