I would love R&B to return to the charts. There's been hardly any R&B hits in years now, and it's kind of sad imo.
I don't think rock has a chance at returning, at least not for a number of years. But as long as dance music goes away (which it looks like it will a bit tbh), then it should be an improvement.
I lost interest in chart music in the mid 00's when R&B dominated, there seems to be a mix now of genre's in the chart which is a good thing.
lol. There really isn't. It looks like it is, because you look at all the artists and you see what you think is variety, but it's so awful at the moment.
I mean, let's put it this way. Ludacris, Florence + the Machine and Taylor Swift all have songs in the chart, but their songs are practically the same.
There was more variety in 2006, since you had all the indie music, and all the hip hop, and you still had the dance tunes as well (and they were generally of better quality as well).
That said, the charts have definitely improved in terms of variety this year compared to 2009-2011.
Probably not sadly. We'll get the odd rock track somehow finding it's way into the top 10 such as Biffy Clyro or Muse, but no more than 4-5 songs for the entirety of 2013.
Pop rock maybe since Paramore, Cassadee Pope (Hey Monday singer), Avril Lavigne etc are all coming back...
It seems although there are a lot of rock fans that are very vocal about how their music is supreme to everyone elses, a lot of them don't actually buy the music. They only go to gigs. So it's a bit silly how they're always moaning about chart music when they could get their faves in the charts if they just bought their singles.

Really? Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Rolling Stones etc. have all sold a boat load of records.
And about 30 years after those records, they still turn up to hear the back catalogue.
There simply isn't any decent rock music about now, at least not in mainstream.
Rock is the best genre, always has been and always will be.
In terms of indie rock music being the main music cycle in the mainstream other than pop obviously that always seems to come around in the middle of the decade for a few years then fade out again.
I'm mainly thinking mid 90's and mid 00's when indie was huge and loads of bands were around so perhaps it's due in a few years?

I agree Zeppelin never released a single , Dark Side of the Moon still sells very well , Deep Purple had massive album sales when they reformed these groups have something modern acts will never have longevity
I'd like bubblegum pop, RNB, metal, country, rock, and power ballads to return in 2013 and have a fast moving varied chart.
Yeah, that's another thing. I would definitely like a more fast-moving chart. We get so many songs spending 4+ months in the top 40 now, it's just ridiculous.
I would love to see more European music in the charts really I don't know why they don't cos a lot of it is really good.
I agree with this. Loreen is a prime example. Made the top 3 following Eurovision, then dropped like a brick in a pond. Which was a shame, because I thought it was excellent.
All this talk of genres, I would like to see more artists or 'auteurs' experiment or work within different genres. It would be great to see Beyonce or Rihanna produce a rock or a roots-reggae album. So much music today is simply mash-ups of older music, often remixed and over-produced. It would be nice to hear a fresher, simpler sound like the kind of rock that was re-discovered in the mid-70s by the punks.
It was kind of nice to see AC/DC slip into the lower reaches of the Top 40 when their music was released on iTunes this year. However, this is probably the exception.

guitar music (guitar pop and indie) or real rock? like iron maiden, saxon, gillan, whitesnake, rainbow, judas preist, thin lizzy, motorhead, queen, etc etc etc, because all of these charted on many occassions late 70's early 80's.
Demographics will answer the question. Look at the kids going into a school in London, Birmingham, Manchester, etc. These will never be rock fans. The days when (let's face it, white) rock fans helped shape the singles chart aren't coming back. And as they don't buy singles either I'd say more rock in the singles chart just won't happen.
Most Rock music fans tend to buy albums not singles, so as for singles charts probably not. If you look at the mix in the album charts you'll find more rock music.
Would I like to see/hear more rock music in the charts - tbh I don't care because I listen to non-chart obsessed radio stations such as Kerrang and Absolute.
As for "European" music, again I don't look at the origin just the sound. Eurovision song contest is really just a massive Karaoke contest, as no-one plays live, so that is not a good source of material.

Everyone sings live in Eurovision, it would be logistically imposable to have them play live instruments though because they only have less than a minute to clear and set up the stage for the next country:rolleyes:. its the same for most TV shows too when they have musical guests on the bands mime the instruments to the backing track and only the singers perform live(well some of them mime too actually)
The Eurovision has a wide variety of styles, genres and lots of ethnic sounds and no two songs sound the same which is one of the reasons why I love it.
Can't totally agree with this, you see loads of teenagers and early 20's at rock gigs all over the country.
You mean you see loads of white teenagers at rock gigs. The other (ie non-white) kids will be into other (non-rock) types of music. Increasingly these urban music buyers will push rock out of the charts (singles for now but increasingly the albums chart too).

But anything other than dance is a good change

I'm not sure about Rock, but I think Indie/Alternative could dominate. The dance trend is dying out now.

Yeah her album is really good too
Most of them buy albums not singles i'd say.
