I'm always interested in why people like the music they do and how their tastes have changed.
For me:
Wasn't really into any music until about 13-14 when influences by new friends I started listening to Oasis. I really liked them so started listening to similar brit pop bands of the time like Ocean Colour Scene, the Verve, Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics and Travis.
By about 16 I was still listening to brit pop but also began going through a lot of my parent's collection - mainly the Bealtes, Elton John and Dire Straits. This started an interest in 70s soul music like Lionel Richie, Barry White and Bob Marley, which eventually went all the way back to Motown with stuff like Dianna Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations.
After uni, in the mid 2000s, I drifted back into indie guitar stuff, listening to bands like The Strokes, Athlete, The Darkness, Hard-Fi, Libertines, Razorlight, The Kooks etc. However my interest waned and I struggled to enjoy any of their stuff after about 2007-2008.
These days my tastes are pretty stagnate, the new stuff I listen to tends to just be updated versions of soul music, (Plan B, Paloma Faith, Rumer, Cee Lo Green). I 'flirt' with some of the funkier dance music out there (Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris, The Prodigy) but there is almost zero new indie guitar music I listen to - which is odd given how much I used to enjoy it.

I listen to ratchet songs, and i've gone from a classy girl to a dirty one.
So I've gone from Childhood pop (Still have S Club in many current play lists on my iPod) and Britpop (Again Pulp and Oasis still in almost all playlists along with some Verve tracks in some playlists) then I loved Clubland (still get new ones each year/6months) got into Country over time, still listen to a lot of that.
Actually, I just like a bit of all music, I've never looked back and turned my nose up at what I used to love, I tend to look back, then listen to it again on repeat for a few hours, reminding myself why I loved it in the first place.
yes, I'm sorry about that too
From the age of 6-10 I liked Britney, Christina Aguilera, Busted and Avril Lavigne. When I moved into secondary school as an early teen I met new people who were into bands such as Nirvana, Lostprophets (that's a touchy one now, I know), Blink182, Green Day and Paramore. I went through a bit of a pretentious stage where I believed that unless the music contained guitars and drums it couldn't be considered "real music" thus refusing to listen to stuff that I'd listened to as a child.
By late teens I was listening to Oasis (I was always aware of them, but had never really listened to them properly), Blur, and pop such as Katy Perry, Rihanna, The Saturdays. I went back to listening to some of the people that I listened to as a child because I still like some of it.
When I got to 19/20 I started finding a lot of music online who haven't had much/if any commercial success such as Best Coast (I saw them at Shepherd's Bush last year I was at the front so I had the best view of them), Sia, She & Him, Surfer Blood and Paper Aeroplanes. I listen to a lot of acoustic stuff now such as Bon Iver and Laura Marling along with bands such as Kasabian (I really wanted to like them for ages and then it finally clicked. Got to see them at a one off show at Brixton Academy last year. It was amazing, I was right at the front!). I also listen to people such as Ellie Goulding, Fiona Apple, Florence + The Machine ,Rolling Stones , Madonna, The Beatles , Kate Bush, The Smiths and The Cure.
Occasionally I listen to Kanye West, Jay Z, Eminem and Fugees
Basically, I will listen to anything as long as I like it, regardless of genre, when it was released etc.
since the 60's my tastes have been mostly in favour of guitar based music, over the last ten years or so ive become rather bored with it and i get my kicks now out of trance. old stuff i missed from the late 90's (due to 'guitar goggles'...lol) and new material from more recent times.
I then liked Kylie and Jason, Michael Jackson
I used to like those Now! That's what I call Music Compilations
Then I liked those pseudo-rave songs from the late 80s early 90s (Rhythm is a Dancer, No Limit, Pump up the Jam)
I was addicted to Michael Jackson for a while, and then I saw the video for 'Give in to Me' with Slash on guitar, dug out my brothers copy of appetite for destruction and I was ruined from that moment on.

- Soundgarden
- Sepultura
- Therapy?
- Black Sabbath
- Bob Dylan
- Metallica

Now mostly listen to increasingly screamoid thrash metal from the last decade or so.
From like 12 - 15 I listened to rock. (Green Day, MCR, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, FTSK, anything on Kerrang)
From like 15 - now I listen to basically all genres (except metal and classical etc) but mainly like pop music.(Cher Lloyd, Vince Kidd, Little Mix, 2NE1, Rihanna, Rita Ora, J. Cole, Dj Fresh, Beyonce)
pretty much the same story as me. My pretentious phase was hilarious, I can't believe how many non-rock acts I used to slate... now people who refuse to give anything else a chance really annoy me.
Anyway, yeah my taste has just grown over the past few years, now I'm in my mid-twenties - I feel like I can appreciate music from all genres if I enjoy it. I like being more 'open' to music and having a varied taste, it's not healthy for my poor hard drive though the amount of albums I've ended up buying haha.
By the late 80s it was all about darker synth music like Depeche Mode (esp. around the time of "Black Celebration" and "Music For the Masses"), also darker post punk bands like Joy Division and the Cure's earlier work...which led to the inevitable teenage goth flirtation. The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees. The soundtrack to my teenage years.
Grunge and Britpop meant nothing to me at the time and still don't. Rave/dance music (or more precisely, ravers ) I avoided like the plague as they didn't tend to show much tolerance towards those of us who wore fifty shades of black! However, I do like the more leftfield dance music-the likes of the Prodigy and Aphex Twin, and I do occasionally listen to those silly early 90s "choons" which paid homage to the likes of Trumpton.
Nowadays I listen to whatever I feel like (although still mostly from the 80s but less "pop" and more darkly synthetic) and all the above still feature on my playlists. I have, however, reached further back musically since I first went online and I'm a big fan of musical pioneers such as Joe Meek and Kraftwerk.
I have a rock core (soft to heavy) but with lots from other genres. In the car at the moment I have a random shuffle of pop, RnB, rock, prog rock and metal.
Although there are some genres I don't care much for it's probably the case that there is at least some of all genres that I'd like. At the end of the day if you like it then you like it! Genres are just rough and ready guides.
Thats what I still like.
Then in 2000 at age 16 I moved in with the mister and he's a big rock fan so the 2000s for me were very much shaped by my rock music education, from classic to current, until I reckon now I have more knowledge of it than he does!
In the past few years I'd say classic rock and more obscure rock musicians have been my main music of choice, but lately I have kind of developed an appreciation for urban music, dance, a bit of pop, etc. I'm also a bit into the non-rock side of the 70s and 80s musical era.
Pretty much at the moment my tastes stretch across the board. I tend to just like what I like now.
ETA: Last ten songs played --

Well Respected Man -- the Kinks

So a bit all over the place really...
Early teens involved mostly Punk, Two-Tone and New Wave and then onto Soul, Funk, Reggae, Hip Hop and eventually Jazz and early Chicago house, NJ Garage.
From my twenties I've delved far deeper into soul, funk, reggae, hip hop, vocal and instrumental jazz, R&B and started buying more significant amounts of African music.
I'm still at the same place but consuming more and more Brazilian music as well. I give a bit of Punk and New Wave a spin occasionally but stick to a strict diet of black music 99.5% of the time.
Of the modern brood I'm impressed by LadyGaga (Pokerface is amazing) and Calvin Harris ("Bounce" was played a lot in the Olympics indoor and outdoor volleyball.)
And guess what i still go to concerts, nothing like a heavy rock concert to get the old adrenaline flowing.:D:D
I do still like other acts though such as Fleetwood Mac,ect ect.
So long as they can do the buisiness live.:)
As a teen (12-18) I was into Britney Spears, Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, Holly Valance, a lot of the Pop Idol acts (I know ), Sugababes, Rachel Stevens, Girls Aloud and others. I even liked the Cheeky Girls when I was 13
Age 18-now: Now I listen to pop such as Britney, The Saturdays, Lady Gaga, Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Girls Aloud, Rihanna etc. but I also listen to a lot of dance and I'm getting into electronica. I also listen to a lot of 80s, 90s and 00s music as well as modern music. I have a fairly varied taste now or I like to think I do
In short my music taste has got more grown up as I've grown up but once I like a song I pretty much like it for life.
Well you have a 'fairly varied taste' in just female pop singers ... why no men?
I find a lot of their songs boring. I can't stand boybands or male singers/groups who just sing ballads or covers all the time. Some male artists are alright but overall I prefer female artists. I think their songs are better.
