Not all will agree with this one, for a number of reasons...
The most obvious being that it is such an established classic, and there will be those who will consider it sacrilege...plus John Martyn (sadly no longer with us) has a somewhat unique voice, not to everyone's taste...and the very different arrangement of the song.
But I absolutely love it, especially the arrangement, and I have loved Martyn's stuff for years...
As others have said here I prefer Bowie and Jagger, Dancing in the Street. Flying Pickets, Only You was brilliant, no idea why that is the version that never gets played.
I've never been a big George Michael fan but that aside, Robbie's cover of Freedom is like a completely different song, much better and so much more...er, ooomf, for want of a better word.
For a novelty one, Mel Smiths and Kim Wildes Rocking Around the Xmas Tree was quite funny and better to listen to.
People Are Strange - Echo and The Bunnymen
Walk On By - The Stranglers
Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Fields Of Gold - Eva Cassidy
Land Of Confusion - Disturbed
Pass Out - Plan B
Ain't Nobody - KT Tunstall
Little mix - Cannonball
Alexandra Burke - Halleujah
Leona - Run
Gabrille Aplin - Power Of Love
Ellie Goulding - Your Song
I have to disagree with Power of Love and Your Song. Those songs are classics to me, as an 80s teenager and it kills me to hear them being destroyed by the covers that have been done of them.

Totally agree Julie. It was painful to hear 'The Power of Love' being ruined by one the many twee-girly covers that have been used on adverts lately. No match at all for the supreme voice of Holly Johnson.
What about 'It Must Be Love' by Madness? I like the Labi Siffre version, but the Madness version just transforms the song.
To me, the NiN original of Hurt is seriously under rated. I love Johnny Cash's version but to me the original is so much more powerful, especially when you put the whole album into context.
Jeff Buckley does an amazing cover of "I Know It's Over", originally by The Smiths as well as the obvious one of "Hallelujah". Radohead have a fw very good covers such as Can's "The Thief", New Order/Joy Division's "Ceremony" and The Smiths "Headmaster Ritual" Oasis also do a great job of "I Am The Walrus" in my opinion (re read those last three words before you attack me ) Bat for Lashes cover of Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" is breath taking.
But my absolute favourite cover has to be Joy Division's version of Velvet Underground song "Sister Ray", it's just perfect to me!
Lacuna Coil's version of Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence is much better than the original
:eek::eek::eek:
Tainted Love- Soft Cell - much better than the original.
Someone mentioned Jealous Guy and I agree, WAY better sang by Roxy Music.
Jolene by the White Stripes is as good as the original by Dolly, that i also love.
Tonight sang by George Michael, way better than Elton John's version. It's totally his song. I'm do not even like George Michael that much but i would dare anyone not respect him as an artist after hearing him sing this on one of his live videos on Youtube.

I actually agree with all of them (well except the Power Of Love song because I've never heard the original so I can't compare).

Definite yes to the first one but for me Run would probably be in my top 4 or 5 worst covers I've ever heard, outside of novelty tracks.
The last 30 or 40 seconds of it is about as dislikeable music to me as there is and is just noise.

Gloria, much sexier by Jim Morrison.
