I did think Oliver but I'm sure The Wizard said the other day that he hasn't heard of anyone being given this name since the 80's, and I think there have been loads of boys named Oliver in recent years. Why don't you think it's Roy?

Roy Wood was in the band called Wizard.

So he was! That gives me even more reason to think it's Roy! ;)

I don't like double barreled names like Anne-Marie or Sarah-Louise. I just think it sounds silly

Lexi-lee, Lexi-anne, Lexi-may. Or any other name that has the word 'Lexi' in it.
Awful name, always being screamed by mothers wearing jeans far too tight for them and waving a pasty around. Plus, it sounds like a name you would give to your dog.

I heard a mother talking to her son today whose first name was Cyrus.

    That's just so wrong! :)

Wasn't Cyrus Vance a Director-General of the United Nations? You could be subconsciously grooming a child for greatness with such a name.

Good guess but that doesn't tie in with Roman origin and has a link to composer Holst. And yes you're still looking for a name on that list.

You lot would be shite at cryptic crosswords. :p

Centuries of trying to teach the Irish the proper (British) way to do things and they still don't get it, do they?

Edie/Edith is a current annoying one. Maybe Lily Allen started it.

Two girls I know have called their baby daughters Edith so they can shorten it to Edie. If you want her to be called Edie why not just name her Edie?! It's a stupid hipster name anyway.

And I used to love Esme until Twilight ruined it.

That all suggests it's a rather modern name. In fact, my great-aunt, now aged 95, is Edith, and was always known as Edie.

Maybe they are just big fans of Last Of The Summer Wine as that was Thora Hird's character.

Or fans of Bread and Granddad's bit on the side Edie Mathieson

I have had bad experiences with people called Adele. It's not a name I like.

Ditto Gail, and it also reminds me of drippy Gail from Coronation Street.

I get that it's an old fashioned name.

What annoys me is that it feels like there are seasons in twee Cath Kidston names, just like the fashion seasons. The wave of Harry's, Oliver's, Alfie's, Amelia's, Amelie's and Lily's is finally drying up, and another wave starts to come in - Edie, Elsie, Matilda, Betty, Bertie, Marnie, Ted.. there is a strong chance that they will also end up being addressed by their surname initial!

If you really want to mine the retro for names how about something like Vera or Norman? Not cutesy but they won't end up being Harry M throughout their school careers either..

If I sound like I've got a bee in my bonnet it's because several women I know are about to drop and I'm sick of people pondering the 'cool' factor of every baby name!!

    Jamie

Or anything else I get called apart from James even as a small kid it bugged me

I don't mind my middle name full or shorted it's just variations of my first I hate
