the most greatest omission is this
the creation - making time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NanaVb77plI
it should be in the 'very good' catagory, c #17.
Apart from all the classic pop that the OP has mentioned, it was a brilliant year for Soul (Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, James Brown, Sam and Dave all at the top of their game), the Beach Boys gave us one of greatest albums of all time in "Pet Sounds" and one of the greatest singles of all time in "Good Vibrations" and the Beatles gave us what many consider to be their greatest ever album, "Revolver".
It was also the the year that U.S. Garage Rock peaked and Psychedelia began.
Albums had become just become important, rather than a couple of singles and a bunch of covers and fillers.
Revolver, Blonde on Blonde and Pet Sounds all came out this year for Godsake!!!
Bands like The Who, The Kinks, The Stones and Simon & Garthfunkel were tentativaly priming themselves to be legends.
Oh yeah and The Monkees!!
ha ha.... id find it hard to praise 76 or 06 as i didnt like those years, both being near the bottom of my all time years. i did 66 because some people said they prefered that year as opposed to 86, 96.
Well yes but this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn1ocjcD-ZE
wasn't Lonnie Donegan's best effort
great songs!
1.Pet Sounds-The Beach Boys
2.Revolver-The Beatles
3.Blonde On Blonde-Bob Dylan
4.Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme-Simon and Garfunkel
5.Sounds of Silence-Simon and Garfunkel
6.Love-Love
7.Face To Face-The Kinks
8.Buffalo Springfield-Buffalo Springfield
9.If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears- The Mamas and Papas
10.Small Faces-Small Faces
Small Faces, Kinks, Sandie Shaw, Walker Brothers, Four Seasons, Rolling Stones. This chart is sounding good so far.
caught pet clarke and small faces.. would like to hear dusty (little by little) stevie wonder (uptight) and spencer davis... but im not listening now!
I'm sure it'll be available on I-Player when you do find the time to listen.
I enjoyed that. The tracks in the top ten were not as much to my liking as those in lower positions, but it was still a fantastic chart.
It's hard to believe that just one year later the singles charts were choc-a-bloc with cheesy ballads by the likes of Engelbert Humperdinck, Vince Hill, Des O'Connor and Val Doonican. What went wrong?
... but the chart i posted for dec 65 was full of cheesy ballads too... ken dodd had 2!
i guess these 'mums' artists were the forerunners of todays boybands, only with individual talent!
I'm now going to have a lovely time looking at them all and reminiscing:D
youre welcome
have you checked out the 'rare 60's classics ' thread? its never far away from page 1.
maybe because it was from 67! july 67 according to the guiness book.
the single entered the charts in december 66 but spent most of its chart run including its peak in 67, so it counts as 67 in my listings and is highly placed :)
Thankyou, I will definitely check that out:D
Yeh I listened to it. When I did my top 100 from the 60s last year I included the following songs from 1966:
Beach Boys:- Good Vibrations
Spencer Davis Group:- Gimme Some Loving
Easybeats:- Friday on My Mind
Georgie Fame:- Get Away
Four Tops:- Reach Out I’ll Be There
Hollies:- Stop Stop Stop
Kinks:- Sunny Afternoon
Kinks:- Dead-End Street
Loving Spoonful:- Daydream
Loving Spoonful:- Summer in the City
Robert Parker:- Barefooting
Jimmy Ruffin:- What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted?
Nancy Sinatra:- These Boots Are Made for Walking
Troggs:- Wild Thing
Troggs:- I Can’t Control Myself
Yardbirds:- Over Under Sideways Down
One day I must go all the way and commit to a top 20! My no 1 would be either Good Vibrations or Friday on my Mind.
That goes for me too!
CHOON! I absolutely love 'Barefootin'' and am surprised it's not played more frequently these days. VH1 Classic used to show a video that I've since learned was made by Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit, Creature Comforts etc.) quite a bit at one point. I only got to know the song because it was featured on an excellent compilation in the 90s called Shades of Soul.
It was great to see the superb 'Lightning Strikes' by Lou Christie on mushymanrob's list. That's another of my underplayed faves too. I've found people often mistake it for a Frankie Valli track.
Some of my other favourites from 1966 (includes some album tracks):
Dusty Springfield - All I See Is You
Mamas & The Papas - I Saw Her Again
Temptations - Ain't Too Proud To Beg
Edwin Starr - Stop Her on Sight (S.O.S.)*
Bob Dylan - I Want You
Simon & Garfunkel - Leaves That Are Green
Simon & Garfunkel - A Poem On The Underground Wall
Simon & Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair/Canticle
Simon & Garfunkel - April Come She Will
The Beatles - For No One
The Beatles - Got to Get You Into My Life
The Who - Boris the Spider
Paul Jones - High Time
The Hollies - I Can't Let Go
As you can probably tell, 'Sounds of Silence' and 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme' are amongst my favourite albums.
*Peaked a lot higher when reissued 2 years later by all accounts. One of the best Motown singles of all time - simple piano, repeating the same note with slight staccato before the fabulous brass etc. kicks in - what an intro!
