I'm generally a Mac user - have iPhone, iPad2, MacBook Pro. But I also have a Nexus 7. I bought it before iPad mini came out and got the 16GB one (when it was 8GB and 16GB). I've found that I really like stock Android. The Nexus 7 is a really nice tablet, Android (Jelly Bean) is smooth and has the apps I use. I am pleasantly surprised at how much I like Android.
My only criticism is one of services - while I can use Google services on iPad, I cannot seem to use my iCloud calendar using Google's calendar app and Apple don't allow you to use iCloud on the Nexus with Chrome. But that simply makes me think Apple are being dicks.
Oddly, I have tried the iPad mini and just didn't like it. I didn't like how the bevel was so thin and the screen is nowhere near as crisp as the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD. I am sure that Apple will release an HD (aka retina) display one soon so that might make me reconsider. But at the moment I am really enjoying my Nexus 7.
Oh okay. I need 3G model as I want it for college and to use on the bus etc....
The 3G model is like £200 more I think:eek:
If you have a smartphone you can tether it to the iPad or the nexus 7 if you choose that one. Then you can have Internet on the go on your tablet and you won't have to pay any extra, it just comes out of your Internet allowance. That's what I do.
My only concern is most of my songs are bought from the iTunes Store. I heard the nexus doesn't support iTunes music
I'm sure your music will play on the nexus 7. I use the galaxy note phone and 95 % of my music was purchased from iTunes. There is only one album that won't play, everything else works.

Apart from the nexus 7 is there any other tablet you recommend?
Also I think only 3 mobile sell the 3G nexus as I can see the wifi only nexus on the amazon website and John Lewis!

Hmmm when I google searched it, most sites are saying you need a software that converts iTunes music to be able to play on the nexus.
I am thinking maybe the iPad now. That said its £300 more than the nexus I think

Well I would agree with you about the iPad. I've had a nexus 7 and currently have the galaxy tab 2 10.1 and my ipad mini beats them hands down. iPads are expensive but I think they are worth the money.

Hmmm maybe your right. Main reason saying that is it doesn't make sense for me to have like 1000 tracks on iTunes that all has to be converted on to the nexus.
What's the screen quality like on the iPad mini

What's the screen quality like on the iPad mini
The iPad mini screen quality is OK. nowhere near the resolution of the other major players. If screen resolution is an issue then it might be worth waiting for the mini 2 if you must stay with Apple.
For info we have a lot of music that my wife has bought through itunes and they all play on the Nexus 7 just fine
As people have said most users simply set up their phones to allow tablets to share the 3G/4G. That means that you can use a wifi model when 'out and about' (just make sure your phone tarif allows tethering). This saves you paying 2 monthly fees.
On a forum like this you will get many conflicting views. Both tablets will do most things pretty much the same and just as quick. With the iPad you get 4:3 screen and inclusion in the Apple environment (which many of us see as a bad thing :P). With the Nexus you get a 16:9 high res screen, NFC and GPS all for a fraction of a price.
IMHO its a no-brainer but others will have different opinions.

I would offer my experience and just go and try them both for a decent amount of time. I did and chose the iPad mini.
The apple environment point is not an issue. I use mine to play both music and movies and have never bought either from apple.

thanks for the feedback
so you recommend the nexus 7?
also how did your wife transfer the songs? did she use another software?

You can just connect the nexus 7 to your pc and then drag and drop/copy and paste your songs across from your PC to your nexus 7. It's really easy, even easier than using iTunes.
I agree with Stuart H regarding the screen. It is OK, not as bad as some people make out. It has a good colour contrast. It's good enough for me.

Yup. Just drag and drop. or if you like you can upload them all to Google music (cloud storage) and access all your music anywhere. Or use your Nexus to just stream your music/video directly from your PC or NAS drive. Lots of options

Yea google music storage is really good I have all my music uploaded there and I stream it to my ipad and google chromebook.

I see. So why do websites say you need a 3rd party software to play iTunes bought music and movies on the nexus?
That's strange?
Also how do you upload songs from iTunes on to google music using a MacBook Pro?

They want to make you think that going iOS > Android is a big clumsy disaster, when in reality it isn't.
As for uploading your tracks, download the Google Music Manager, select the folder where you keep your music on your MacBook [it'll probably do it automatically] and it'll upload [or match] all your songs [up to 20,000] for free and they'll be accessible anywhere on any device that can access Google Music.
This service costs £21 a year with Apple and is nowhere near as good.
16:10 is the ideal compromise. Its becoming quite standard on the full 720p Android devices.
The ancient 16:9 was very much imposed on netbooks by Intel.

Of course it is better. It is a bigger screen. Why wouldn't it be better?

Personally I like *stock* Android. I don't really like tablets where the manufacturer has put a skin on them like Samsung etc. Some people really get on well with that; I don't.
I'll probably stick with my iPad2 and my Nexus7 for now. Though I am finding that I use the Nexus a lot more than the iPad2 at the moment. When iOS7 comes out we shall see, but I don't know if it'll even run on my iPad2 and iPhone4 yet...
I do like iPad and iOS (and as I mentioned am a big user of Apple products and services), but at the moment iPad mini has nothing that I want that I cannot get from my Nexus7. Actually, the only possible exception is the rear camera. That would be nice.

Oh okay. So basically you can only listen to the songs trough the Internet or is it on your nexus without Internet.
You know the google store, how quality is their music? You know apple it is 256kbps, what's the google stores?

You can copy all your music onto your nexus if you like too. Just drag and drop it. Apple makes you think its so comlicated but it really ISNT!

Are you sure? I'm blaming you when I buy it on Friday and it doesn't work
So what's the best way of putting music on from iTunes? Using google manager or drag and drop?

I didn't think iTunes DRM'd its music any more?

You don't need any software like crappy iTunes. Just drag and drop.;)

And there was me , almost thinking the OP had a Nexus 7.
I guess if you say it often enough it becomes true.
Or is that 'needs must'?

Did intel release the first NetBoot then?
