Maybe there's a Jimmy Saville type story ready to break.

Nope, it's happened a few times.

The first pope to resign was Pope St. Pontian, who was exiled to the salt mines of Sardinia during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Maximinus Thrax. As the salt mines were basically a death sentance he decided the church should be run by a pope who wasn't in a salt mines and so he resigned as pope on Sept. 28, 235, to allow a new pope to be chosen.

It hasn't happened since 1415 mind.

Amusingly the rules don't say who he actually offers his resignation to. A letter addressed to God one assumes. :D

Oh no!!! Not another hand-wringing and anxious period of waiting for the puff of white smoke.

Seriously, I couldn't give a flying one, who needs a flaming pope anyway? Let the position die with him, sell off the riches and give the proceeds to the poor of the world, especially those in Africa who he denies the right to practice safe sex.

The man's evil, his church is evil, it has blood on its hands and then there's the paedo problem.

Can of worms opened much here.

I can imagine the fun and games while he's waiting for a sign from God. "Father John just went for a shite...but nothing came out. It's a sign, I tell thee."

Oh good, we can have another "Pope smoke: WHATM" thread.

I'm indifferent to religion and the various leaders but that thread 8 years ago was pretty funny. "Oh, oh smoke...aw, it's black..."

Perhaps he has finally realised it is pointless to continue insisting his Religion explains our existence better than Science does.

This man fawning over him on Sky is embarrassing.

    Thanks for the link.

I hadn't realised that Popes have retired from office before.

Probably got a fatal illness and is being realistic.

Hope they don't replace him with someone even more right wing and ancient. But bet they do.

Didn't know you could resign from being Pope. First thought was maybe it has something to do with the paedo priests from a couple of years back. Has he been rumbled for similar things?
