Thought all the Scots chefs rose to the brief much better than the London chefs. There were some genuine laughs.
I agree, i've only just caught up with last thursday & friday's programmes, really pleased Michael went through, his goat dish was one that i'd really love to try & he seems like one of the nicest chef's in the competition.
Gutted for Tony though, it's a shame they can't have two heats from Scotland, let's face it the place is big enough to warrant it isn't it?
Looking forward to seeing Phil Howard this week, I liked him as a contestant last year and found his tongue-in-cheek arrogance rather amusing
Ooh Phil howard as judge this week - not one of my favourites in the past i must admit always comes across to me as a pretty humourless chap so will be interesting to see him with the comic relief side of things
loved the baked beans bath
good job it went well for her looking at what happens tomorrow!
Looks like her training would make her a natural for this brief.
Think she might be out of her depth with some things though. I reckon she'd usually do these dishes with a team of Heston trained chefs and not some college trainees
...always comes across to me as a pretty humourless chap so will be interesting to see him with the comic relief side of things
That's what the wife said as soon as we saw it was him, also I seem to recall his preferred cooking style was very old school traditional.
In short about the least suitable person to judge this year's contest.
As it was he didn't do too bad. I loved how both he and Aiden really, really wanted to dislike the bean bath dish and just couldn't because it tasted so good.
I adore Phil Howard! Lovely to see him judging. I don't think he should have penalised her for her lateness last night - the warning he gave her sufficed. I think Glyn Purnell took 2 courses to say to Aktar (apologies if I've got his name wrong, I can't for the life of me remember it and Aktar Islam seems right) about his lateness. Phil was very clear that if she's late again, she'll be penalised.
Did anyone else fail to see what was so funny about Debra Stevenson? She can't really bill herself as an impressionist or comedian when all of her impressions sounded nothing like the person she was attempting to be and her jokes were about as funny as a bout of man flu (and you're the person stuck looking after the sufferer).
I love Phil Howard, great to see a chef of his stature as a judge on GBM, and his comments throughout the programme will have been insightful to anyone with a genuine interest in food and cooking.
Mary-Ellen's dish must have tasted amazing, as it did not look very appetising though did fit the brief brilliantly. I do look forward to see what she comes up with during the rest of the week!
Phil Howard is a lot nicer as a judge than I thought he would be. I did not warm to him last year until the actual banquet episode but this year he is coming across as both warm and helpful so far.
I thought the baked beans dish looked horrible so it must have tasted amazing!!
Did anyone else fail to see what was so funny about Debra Stevenson?
Certainly on the bits they showed of her she didn't do anything funny, As a lot of impressionist shows have proved, doing the voice of someone even when done well is not funny in itself and they need to deliver witty lines as well to make it work. Seems like Debra is like a lot of comic actors and is not naturally witty so being without any script she should not have forced it so much.
Anyway I digress - like a few others I view Phil as a man who is quite serious about his food so I was a bit surprised he was so generous to the lady chef yesterday. I find it hard to criticise a judge's score though as obviously I don't get the chance to taste the food.
The thought of cold baked beans doesn't really appeal to me and if I had the choice of the three dishes from a menu I probably wouldn't choose it. I'm not too sure which of the others I'd opt for. Not too keen on a broth/soup as a starter when eating out and I'd be worried by the apparently heavy garlic content of the box of frogs affecting my taste for the remaining courses. On the two occasions I've had frogs legs I've found them tasty but not particularly satisfying. Still, with three courses still to come you don't want anything too filling I guess.
Despite Aiden's determination to get through to the final I'm surprised he's gone for it again this year as the brief isn't a great one for him. I think it's his undisguised competitiveness that makes it difficult to warm to him but I think he will probably make it to the judging chamber again this week.
Mary-Ellen seems a bit unprepared or nervous and it was fortunate yesterday she was last up as otherwise her lateness would have impacted on the other chefs getting their dishes out. Hard to say too much about Chris except he seemed a nice guy.

I didnt see and sign of him 'getting' any humour or even taking the brief into account when judging.
I wonder if he will penalise the lateness. They never seem to do so, and it always irritates me!
EDIT: should have guessed shouldn't I?
He says he will penalise if it happenes again, I think the time scales are about putting pressure on and seeing how they react, who is to say that a more timely dish would not have produced a 9?

I think Phil thinks he should always be a judge, and a highly regarded one at that, he appeared to think competeing was beneath him last year.
Mary Ellens dish must have been outstanding. I am keen to see what the judges say
I hope we get to see more of Chris tonight, he appeared to be lost between Aiden and Mary-Ellen on the starters.
Its going to be an interesting week as we seem to have a very competitive chef with less talent than ambition, a woman with, what looks like, natural ability but organisational skills lacking and a geuine nice guy whose cooking is a mystery to me yet.
All that. and a judge chef who will favour whoever he thinks is going to be most impressed by him.
That's all I've done this series -ignored the heats and watched the food as it came up for the judges! I find this Comic Relief 'amusing food' concept rather boring.

Yes he does
Liked the look of the baked bean dish, not sure I'd like the taste though

I feel the same somehow. i found it a very ironic scene with him & phil wearing comedy hats critiquing his food
I know what you mean, me neither, he seems nice enough but there's just something i can't warm to.
He came across as a tad desperate last year i think.
Think she might be out of her depth with some things though. I reckon she'd usually do these dishes with a team of Heston trained chefs and not some college trainees
He's doing the same this year. He looks so intense when watching the others

It looked, and apparently tasted, brilliant and bang on the brief - Aiden and other bloke's efforts looked really weak by comparison.

No I can't either. I ate in his Lymn restaurant twice, both times the food was fine but underwhelming and the atmosphere made it unenjoyable.
He did, and this year he is giving the impression of being a little mean spirited.
I think Phil thinks he should always be a judge, and a highly regarded one at that, he appeared to think competeing was beneath him last year.

I'm sure he would agree. I dont. His cooking is style over content for me.
Agree, but the trailer from last night looks like she hits a wall tonight
I like her, she has a lovely attitude.

I will just wait and agree with Pru on Friday
