The channel is funded from the public purse, thankfully that is to be reduced this year as it has been proven that the audience consists of under a thousand and sometimes nil for many of the programs. Yes there are minority channels, but I doubt they get the amount of public funding, if any.
There are no other Welsh channels out there and Welsh is an official language of the UK. Welsh people pay for a TV licence too.
This reminds me of a poster of a car park showing all but one space marked for disabled parking and it said "If car park was like this how quickly would a non-disabled person complain?"
This case is not quite so bad, the Welsh seem happy with one channel (they've never complained) and now people are talking about scrapping that? Come on, get a grip.
If it was in english, and had pretty good reviews I would try it, but I can't be bothered with watching a foreign program.
Foreign??? How is Pobol y Cwm in any way a foreign program? It maybe produced in a minority language but that language is still part of the UK. And don't forget, PyC is created on the same Roath Lock studios that give us Doctor Who and Sherlock.
By the way... there was a major character named Izzy (sadly now departed).
there is a strong argument for the bbc showing its 'regional ' soaps on the whole network - we're having the same debate on one of the River City threads at the moment. But they would seriously have to consider if and when they broadcast a minority language programme -and it is a minority language outside of Wales. They have to look at viewing figures for Borgen and the Swedish version of Wallander, which are the only mainstream popular tv programmes that I can think of which have been subtitled, and take it from there. If they think they are likely to get high viewing numbers for a subtitled programme, then go for it!I probably wouldn't watch, because I don't like watching subtitled films or tv, but it might prove popular. But if I'm being honest, I think the BBC is very London-centric, and unlikely to back the wholesale broadcast of anything made in the regions - Torchwood and Dr Who are the exception to the rule.

You are probably right but thank heavens for Russell T. Davies! Whatever else anyone might think about him he brought back Dr Who and simultaneously brought a major industry to Cardiff. For that he will always have a special place in my heart.

I think it would make more sense to show River City nationally, I don't know why they don't, it's been on ten years. Although, the accent might be a challenge for some

Oi, I hope you're not insinuating Scarlett has a guid strong Glesga accent.
I'm all for showing Welsh language drama throughout the UK. In Scotland we have River City and it is one of the few drama's being produced here that is actually Scottish. Waterloo Road being described as a Scottish drama is an insult and only happened in order to excuse the BBC from actually producing genuine Scottish drama. They could show River City nationally but my concern would be that they'd be pressurised to tone down Scottish accents for English viewers.
no, it just meant to be a Welsh language soap to help promote the language as well as entertain people, maybe they should have a Cardiff based English language welsh soap shown nationally.
I wouldn't normally watch the conventional and popular soaps, but when reading travel writer Bill Bryson's book about Britain, [Notes from a small island] he recommended PYC and I decided to watch it for a while.
This was at the time Jinx had his accident off the scaffold, and Britt and Gwynneth went over to Calais [for some reason], and it was during Gwynneth's chemotherapy period, so maybe someone regularly watching, could tell me how long ago these plots were running.
The Huw White story about joining a cult, sequences in last weeks omnibus were well done and not contrived in any way. I only watch on sunday's to avoid as many of the adverts as possible. I have no Welsh family connections that I'm aware of , so it's nothing to do with that, that I watch PYC. I've just grown used to the characters.
In the 90's Pobol Y cwm was shown on BBC2 in the afternoons for a while they might as well do this now seeing as the afternoons are full of repeats.
I'd like to have seen episodes from the 90's when the current set of villagers would have been a bit younger, but I believe tat most of them are only recently in it. I did see an episode from 1992 on a British Film institute website an episode which |Denzil discovered Sioned's brother had died in the cot, and Hywel was in it as well as Meic.

where can I watch it?
http://www.s4c.co.uk/clic/c_index.shtml
Click on 'English' at the top and then scroll down and click on Pobol Y Cwm. It shows the last 5 eps. Click on the subtitles to get them in English.
Let us know what you think and if you have any questions about characters or storylines, just ask in the main Pobol Y Cwm thread
I think you can also watch it on BBC Iplayer
Yeh you can but I've found the subtitles aren't as good. They seem to miss some out.

:DHope he comes to Scotland, we need him:D:D
You've got Moff! Go Moff!

Channel 134 on sky or 168 (i think) on virgin
I thought I remembered it being on one of the main channels, ages ago. good to know I didn't imagine it!:D
Maybe they don't need to so much now as S4C is available through the UK, back then it wasn't.
Yes that's true, I remember it well but they took it off after a while. That was a silly decision, imho.
Shouldn't that be "omibws"
