Its puts me off entering the shop. I used to shop in Bluewater, and sometimes you fancied having a nose around some of the designer shops (even if i couldnt afford anything) and the sales person would pounce immediately asking if i needed assistance. Hmmm, no, if i did i would ask for it !!!
They have to ask that though. Until recently I worked in a higher end clothes shop and we had to greet people and ask if they needed anything pretty much straight away. I hated doing it, and so did some of the others, but we had to, or we'd get told off.
I would never shop in Aldi, Lidl or the jumble sale that is Tk Maxx.
I love TK Maxx! I don't understand why so many people hate it. You can find some good quality stuff in there for a great price. I've bought branded, real leather boots from TK Maxx that lasted years, for example. I paid £40, which is what you'd pay in Topshop for a pair of crappy synthetic ones. I guess it's a bit hit and miss though.

This is going to sound really odd, but I don't like the lighting in TK Maxx. All the ones I've ever been in have really odd painful lighting which makes me feel sick.
I refuse to set foot in the newsagents around the corner from me since the owner got caught with child porn on his computer about 8 months ago
Newsagents are funny places. There's one around the corner from me, and I went in there for some emergency "lady" things. (sorry if it's TMI). The two lads on the counter went bright red, started laughing and talking in a foreign language as they were serving me. Surely if you work in such a shop it should be no big deal
Also the older owner and his relatives are dodgy looking, one time I was the only customer in there in late evening, and they were all standing around staring at me and again, talking in a language I couldn't understand. Not only is it rude, but I felt really uncomfortable. I refuse to go in there now, I'd rather walk a bit longer to the next newsie.
Why the sigh? It's a valid point. Some people would much rather go to a big supermarket with its own parking, get everything they need from the one place and then drive home. Better than faffing about with trying to park in the middle of a busy town centre, then trawling through several small, overpriced shops where they don't even have a great selection. If local businesses were so great, then people would've carried on using them over supermarkets.

I'm not sure about other places, but my mum decided to pick up some food from a couple of local stores (butchers, farm shop, etc) a little while back. She worked out the overall cost and it ended up working out a few quid cheaper than the local supermarket.

Same here in our town although we don't (thank any deity you may or may not believe in) have a Tesco, we have an Asda (used to be a Netto), a Sainsbury's and a Waitrose (used to be Safeway).
We're also lucky to have three independent farmer/butchers, two independent bread shops and one organic bakery but we lost our two greengrocers after Sainsbury's opened. I order my veg online via Able & Cole though.
Only one, and that's a shop in the nearby town. I went in there a few times as they do have very nice chilli peppers and some other products I like, but it's strange... the guys who work there seem to be fine talking to my partner, but when I went in alone they'd either keep talking on their phones or between themselves when serving me. They didn't even really look at me.
Couple of female friends of mine have had the same experience. I don't think they like women? It made me feel awkward, like they'd take my money but didn't want me there.
I'll go in any shop if I need to because I'm not a snob. I prefer and do most of my shopping online because its usually cheaper and I like having the luxury of having it delivered to my flat rather than traipsing round the high street.

Never been in Beatties, but the other 2 aren't posh at all Just normal shops I think.

Aren't Beatties all House of Fraser now? Unless you mean the toy shop chain that went under years ago!

I'm not sure I could survive without Boots...
And in Spain, some resorts seem to have a SPAR on every corner.

However there is a 'Private Shop' - actually called that, with blacked out windows in my town. It's been there for ever.
I've never been in it, and don't think I will.
(I secretly think that it's not actually a sex shop, but houses some cult or other:D)
Could you manage in Wellies ?
Hopefully not too much of an emergency, and you dripped all over the floor.

I refuse to give Lush a penny, any shop that teams up with crazy animal activists to raise money for them are off my list for life.
Few others I'd avoid but none that I would refuse to go to completely

Lush seem to think it's fine to stink out an entire city centre with their citrusy tat.
We've got one of those down the arse end of Newport. Selling dildoes and cock mags.
Hoover bags? Electric iron? Washing up gloves?
