If St Peter, who was married, was made the first pope by Jesus Christ, why are the RC clergy not allowed to marry?
In the early-mid phase of the church *no-one* was allowed to marry, even the congregation, because all the women were married to Christ, not just the nuns.
I imagine it wasn't too popular (although it's the basis for a chunk of the Catholic "Sex is evil and mucky" that still lives today.

So he was manipulative and used his power to further his chances...I think that that description describes almost every man in history. Unprofessional, yes. Illegal or deeply immoral? No.
It's no different to someone senior in a business making a move on the new girl whom he has been assigned to supervise. A bit naughty, yes. But hardly a grave moral crime.
