That point is a bit irrelevant though isn't it.
With the limited number of channels / choice, all the major shows of that time got a very healthy share of the audience.
In todays multi-channel / playback / catchup tv industry the whole ratings / tv share has to be evaluated from a different perspective.
I'm not disputing your comment that it's no longer a ratings juggernaut - BUT, in context it's still stacking up pretty respectable numbers.
Well even as late as 1999, when over half the population had satellite/cable and Channel 5 had been set up, CS was still attracting 15 million viewers and its share was still well over half. Now, for all it's a big deal. CS typically has a share of 35 per cent. Also one factor that Charnham pointed out is some of the soap's older viewers are dying out and not being replaced, a similar fate which befell Crossroads and Take The High Road( whose average viewer age was 70).
There's an article in the Daily Mail magazine today about Our Queen, a 2-hour one-off documentary about a year in the life of the Queen due to be shown on ITV later this month.
Clearly destined for a Sunday slot (now that The Cube has returned for a new series on Saturday, unless they put it on n place of the Jonathan Ross Show at 9.15:rolleyes::p), will it go out the week after DOI and Mr Selfridge finish or will they hold it back for Easter?
Does behind-the-scenes-with-the-Queen still hold the same fascination for the viewers as it would have done 30 years ago? Can we expect this to be one of the top 20 highest rated programmes of the year?
Ref Countdown it was the semis (Wed and Thu) and the final (Fri) of the Champion 0f Champions series that has run since its return in January. So this needs to be factored in - popular series winners from over many years getting huge scores and 9 letter words all over the place.
Back to an ordinary 'new' series from Monday.
Thank you for that context. So, higher-than-usual raw numbers, combined with a dip in total TV viewing, combined to produce comparatively large shares.
When do iPlayer start counting computer views towards official ratings? The Dumping Ground would be a lot higher if that was the case as it's usually in the top 5 on iPlayer.
I think they're still testing this. Progress at BARB moves at a glacial pace.
I'm interested to know how Sadie J, M.I High, Dani's Castle, All Over the Place and The Sparticle Mystery improved in the officials.

Good to see two factual programmes (marked in bold) doing well: My Life performed superbly.
It's bound to launch with a 7m+ figure. I think it's launch will be down on last year but it should still do well.
Ant and Dec are decent competition but I don't think it's terrible news for the voice.
I can't see it flopping as some people think it will. I'm not really a fan but I can't see it flopping. But don't be surprised if it bumps along with okay 6-7m overnight's this year. That's where it should have been last year. I just wan't to see it consistently slowly build across it's run with no big worries. BGT has nothing to worry about it's defiantly the bigger show but the voice should stay honest. If 5m stuck with it when it was really bad last year it can't possibly go lower.
I admit it need big numbers though to justify the cost. 7m would do that for me.
The BBC are doing the right thing by promoting it already. Gets people talking.
Ken
Its going to take something pretty impressive to sustain interest in The Voice right through to its hugely favourable scheduled finish  around midsummer day. Therefore more than decent numbers in the early weeks I would have thought are an imperative -anything less together with a mute finish is going to make it a very difficult job to justify another outlay. Its no wonder they are starting the promotion already.
Huge scores and 9 letter words probably works as much against a Champions series as it does for. Very few, if any, opoprtunities for viewers to feel smug about getting something the contestants didn't.
Indeed they were getting words that even Susie Dent had never heard of - but she said before she looked them up that she knew they would be right!
And the connundrum took about 0.1 second for someone to get meaning the viewer has not even read the anagram before the answer is given.
I have a soft spot for Countdown because I saw quite a bit of it when I was a child.
C4, 'ear me now (;)) - get a new host, get it on at 4pm, with Deal/No Deal at 4.45pm, Dine With Me at 5.30pm, then Simpsons and Hollyoaks, and you've got three hours of decent ratings every day.
Forget making new programes for pre-4pm, because no one watches them, and you're just doing your money. Fill your daytime schedules with old films, American sitcom repeats and horse racing.

Actually you'll find DOND and CDWM are slipping big time in the ratings.

Cracking timeshift for My Life there, a larger timeshift than many CBBC shows - hope we see a similar timeshift for this week's episode (which had around 200k I believe in the overnights).
M.I High seems pretty low as well, but I'm not sure what it's budget is like.
So the top 10 for the week looks like The Dumping Ground, My Life, then possibly 4 O'Clock Club (as it doesn't seem like anything hit 300k).

Royal Docs on ITV rarely do as well as Royal Docs on BBC1. Also, the BBC documentary series that followed the Royal Family around a couple of years has already done that particular job. The Jubilee is a long distant memory and few people will care very much about the event now. Could be a flop, could take us by surprise and be a big hit. Personally I see Easter Sunday against Jonathan Creek all over it. In this respect:
Jonathan Creek 7 million viewers. Our Queen 3.7 million viewers.

The 22:00 news was over 1m down on the 12-month average for a Friday, in part due to the weak lead-in and Piers Morgan's relatively good lead-in for the ITV news, perhaps.

You see Chris now I posted that I have started to doubt myself. I worry that if the voice does fail the BBC don't have anything for 2014.
BGT should be over by the time the live shows?? If that is the case they should shove it back to 8pm maybe later.
They should have started it in march. I agree it need to start well. Oh it's worrying isn't it!!!
If it flops I think it's the end of the road for new talent shows. In my opinion looking for good honest light entertainment that makes them laugh. Why cant the BBC give Dick and Dom something decent. They are wasted with kids TV.
Let's dance I expect to be below 5m tonight. Ant and Dec should hold up. Cant say there show was that great last week though. But this is grumpy old ken talking!:D

Dick & Dom did Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old a few years ago I believe.
I think you mean that BBC won't have anything for spring 2014 but that's not the worry. I think with all the promos it should launch to a respectable audience.
BGT, on the other hand, I would hope it can beat the 9m audience of last years launch (though, a 12m peak).

Yes sorry. Should have been more specific.
This has to have been Cohen's biggest gamble. He had to do it though. In house was supplying him with nothing. I really commend him for taking the gamble.
My worry is that so many were turned off last series that they may just ridicule it and not bother.
BBC One trailing The Village just before Pointless. So when does this start? Looks like we'll have to wait a while for The White Queen.
Tuesday 19th, 9pm, is currently free (Monday that week is also tba but I doubt they'll put it against Broadchurch). After its first week Masterchef will be running Wednesday and Thursdays at 8pm, and Fridays at 8.30pm.
BIB: Hope not, I'm still hoping for Easter or at least the week after, I would say saving it to Autumn would be better for its ratings but it would have to face Downton, since Sunday at 9pm is the only logical slot for it.

I said that. Though that puts it on against Food Glorious Good which is a bit irritating. Maybe they should move Holby City to Wednesday and put Masterchef on on Tuesday. Or maybe the BBC are anticipating that FGF won't be in its slot for very much longer.:D

8pm? I'm surprised they have done that. Actually it's probably a good move.

FGG is now worry at all. It's a flop already masterchef should do okay. I think they have finally stopped trying to make it something bigger than it actually is.
I agree though. It's annoying there are two cooking shows on at once.

Think that's very sensible for Masterchef. Wasn't doing great at 9pm and will give strong ratings pre-watershed. Makes scheduling more consistent now and free's up 9pm. I'd assumed The Village and The White Queen would both be Sunday 9pm, but now I'm assuming one will be midweek.
Also means The Apprentice could start sooner than we think. A combination of EastEnders and Masterchef over the next few weeks will kill Food Glorious Food.

Masterchef's catchphrase: Cooking doesn't get tougher than this.
FGF's catchphrase: Watching a cookery programme doesn't get tougher than this.

Surely, the village which looks like quite a good period drama, would be better suited on sunday night. A sunday night primetime slot would obviously give higher ratings, especially for a period drama, whereas a tuesday 9pm slot can be risky. I know the paradise did remarkably well for a period drama on a tuesday but still you would rather choose the sunday night slot (if its free and no competition).

I see The Village as the kind of domestic drama they seem to air on Tuesdays, just done on a much bigger scale, so I've always expected it there.
Agree with on you the Masterchef scheduling, Masterchef followed by The Apprentice on Wednesdays could do very well for them. I can see The Apprentice starting before the month is over, so that week, the 20th, or the week after 27th.

Ken
We will see. Not long now.
Ken
That Curtis drivel deserved to tank, utterly crass and boring considering the acting talent, weak in both script , direction and acting
Ken
FGG is now worry at all. It's a flop already masterchef should do okay. I think they have finally stopped trying to make it something bigger than it actually is.
I agree though. It's annoying there are two cooking shows on at once.
Ken
