Shocked to hear this news. One of my favourite horror writers of all time.
James Herbert's 'The Dark' was the first horror novel I ever read as a young teenager. He inspired me to try my hand at writing my own horror stories (they were never much good, mind. )
My Dad got me this out of the library when I was nine, would you believe!? It didn't scar me-but it was quite an eye-opener, as I had never read anything like it before, at that age!
Sad news. Loved reading his books over the years, always original. He has not had many of his books filmed, which helps them to remain unique (unlike Stephen King). Favourite would have to be "Domain", the third in the rats trilogy. Only book to give me nightmares!
Thanks for the scares Mr Herbert.
A great loss to the fiction world especially the horror genre. My first horror book was "The Fog" and he was the one that made me read Stephen King for which I will be forever grateful. RIP. You will be missed, not only by those that loved you but by millions of readers everywhere.
There is an article here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21870413 and his books were appreciated by many people and there were quite a few film, TV and radio adaptations which shows the strength and originality of his writing.

A top author who will be missed. RIP James.
Thanks for the scares Mr Herbert.
My thoughts are with his family.
RIP
I spent many a teenage night terrified under my blankets with only my torch and the latest James Herbert to keep me company!
A really good author who had a real talent for writing horror and tackled many different sub-genres within it.
Sad to see this. The Rats trilogy and The Fog - 2 classics of the horror category, and many other decent reads.
Always hoped for another book. RIP James you won't be forgotten..
RIP James Herbert.:(
