i think this proves what people think about Metro/Modern Ui
MS seem to be screwing up big time. Office 2013 has been ruined by the new all white "minimalist" interface that is awful to look at, not to mention the eye strain of looking at such a bright screen.
So out of MS claimed 100 million Win 8 shipment, 8 million start 8 download, 6 million classic shell, approximately 7-8 million startisback and other knockoff. There we got aproximately 25-30 million downoads. 100 million shipment to OEM and other people. May be 50 million active windows 8 user and 30 million use start menu. So much success for the microsoft start screen metro crap. Now go metrotards and cry me a river.
So if around 25-30 million downloads have occurred re-instating the start button, that is just over half of the people using Win8!
Indeed. Many of the people who purchased Windows 8 as an update tried it for a while and then abandoned it.
You'll probably find that's accounted for in the quote where it says 100m shipped, 50m active. Windows phones home for updates and such like so it's easier to estimate active installs.
I was referring to the start button apps. People who have tried Win8 and used it then abandoned will be included in those numbers, people who installed the start button then removed it, people who installed it in VMs to test out, people who downloaded the app multiple times/have down reinstalled of Win8, etc you get the picture.

I have not seen office 2013, i did see the one before. Libre office does what I need. as i have said before, if i could get a decent video editor for Linux, I would go for Linux.
Kdenlive is one of the better ones, but still need some work done on it. Seems to work better with my newer video card.
Considering XP will be obsolete and very quickly too dangerous to use next year what are the potential upgrade sales?
You work for MS? That is scare tactics, Windows Xp will work just as well next year as it does now and the only reason it will be dangerous is when people don't take care.
i know of someone who have never updated their XP from SP1, never had a problem, I don't know why they have never updated, but they have not.
Also note that anyone using IE 8 needs to abandon it till Fix Tuesday or install the temporary fix out now.
Maybe if I used the ribbon a lot i would get used to it, but I don't have any software that really uses it.
I have Office 2010 on my PC but prior to that, working a s a contractor, I've gotten used to it being on the various versions of Office on work PCs.
i did not realise that foxit tried to make their software look like metro.
"Metro" or "Modern UI" is often used interchangeably to describe the RT tiles and the style of UI within the application. But I just mean the latter. Office 2013, Visual Studio 2012 and latest Foxit are both Modern UI in this sense. E.g., see screenshots.

There's a general tend towards minimalism and not just from MS. Google too, for example.
If you think Office 2013 is bad try following the UI feedback for Visual Studio 2012, which looks worse than Office 2013.
As for VS2012 I haven't seen so many programming drama queens all my life I got used to the look in a few minutes. And there's an addon for anybody feeling retro not metro where they can select VS2010 colour scheme.

XP isn't dangerous to use, just be careful what you do on the internet with it and make sure your antivirus software is updated often. XP is still fine to use for games and other non-internet tasks.
Is it possible when XP is made completely obsolete by MS next year that some experts will create their own patches for the OS?
But will you trust a patch from xxS3p1r0thxx that promises to fix a bug? there probably will be people writing them but i doubt that people will be downloading them by the million as unless windows update does the job most people even now wouldn't bother to update their software

I'm using the VS 2010 scheme. I don't especially like the UI but with the VS 2010 colour theme I can live with it.
However, most complaints were about the all-caps menu, which MS didn't back down on. Not surprisingly, as it is part of the Modern UI that everything is getting. Personally, I prefer title case. However, for me, it is a minor issue. I know that you can disable the all-caps menu setting via the registry or extension but I decided to force myself to live with it. I tend not to use menus that much anyway.

I love W8 as do all my family and the majority of our friends who've switched, why do people keep saying its only for touch screens? nonsense, it works fine with mouse and keyboard:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Why do you think crippled like Chromebook is attractive for some.
I guess it's useful for those who are not overly computer literate or just want something simple they can use to surf the internet. I personally wouldn't replace my Macbooks with a Chromebook but I wouldn't mind keeping one in the house for visitors and guests to use. I think hotels should rent them out to customers.
Yep, they have been what have saved us from many of the zero day attacks, MSE excluded.
I think the reality may be that they might now start to patch rather than dynamically protect.
The trouble is that i doubt MS is going to give AV vendors the required source code/utils/digital signatures to make proper patches and I doubt the AV companies would want to do that anyway.
Some of the big AV companies still support win2k so xp support won't disappear until the number of people paying for those versions drops to a level where its not financially viable (i.e big companies consolidating/replacing VM's) .

Just like Apple then.

That's some very dubious assumptions. I highly doubt 1 download = one active install

Just abandon IE full stop, use a better browser.
If I did not have startisback, I would be using windows 7 now, simple as that

It's basically a tablet/laptop hybrid. It's not too bad though from what I've heard about it. My dad said that if he won the lotto he'd buy one.
Cheeky!
Looks like Windows 8 is selling well then

It is simply the reality of having Windows.

The "patches" will be the AV definition updates - for as long as they keep making them available for XP.

Personally, I think it is for the literate business orientated person. It is not as much about being savvy but having the time to sort stuff out.
